The top deputy of al Qaeda number two-man Ayman Al-Zawahiri has been arrested, according to "Islamist sources in London" cited by the Middle Eastern Media Research Institute on Thursday. "Abdallah Muhammed Rajab Abd al-Rahman, aka Ahmad Hassan Abu Al-Khir, who is in charge of al Qaeda finances and the right hand man of Ayman Al Zawahiri, has been arrested," MEMRI said.
"Abu Al-Khir was previously sentenced to death in absentia in Egypt," the news service said, based on translations of a report earlier this week in the London-based newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat.
In an audiotape released two weeks ago, Al Zawahiri warned of new al Qaeda attacks against the U.S. and boasted, "The American collapse has started to become a reality ... in Afghanistan. The forces of Islam and Jihad are starting to chase the crusaders and the hypocrites of Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, and the Arab peninsula."

We're ending this year in a great way. The bad guys are getting caught one by one. Osama is next, just wait!
In the mean time, God bless America, God bless President Bush. A real man is in charge, not those sissy rats!

It makes sense that this kind of thing would be announced in the Islamist press. If they did lose a guy, they would want their people to know about it so they could react accordingly--flee, destroy documents, etc.

Or would that be cruel and unusual punishment ? LOl

Skeptical but hopeful. This guy is the brains behind AQ not Oshama. If he was captured without OBL it would make me wonder if OBL is still alive. Those two always stuck together.

Newsmax is overratted and overused here at FR. I totally agree.

These London Islamist sources have a fairly shoddy track record, primarily because they tend to repeat rumor and innuendo (like al-Qaeda being responsible for the summer blackout) as fact. They said that al-Khadr was dead too over the summer when it turned out that only his son had been killed by the Pakistani military and that he had managed to escape.
I would want some verification of this before coming to any conclusions, especially since this guy was supposedly in Iran as of last September. Maybe he's joined those "in custody" over there too ...

Has this been confirmed?

A NEW YEARS EVE 2003 ANTHRAX POP QUIZ Which of the following contains the letters A-T-A-T (the order of the letters may vary) and has been associated with the anthrax mailings?
(1) The anthrax letter that contains over scored letters.
(2) Mohamed Atta -- the suspected pilot of the hijacked plane that slammed into the World Trade Center's North Tower Sept. 11.
(3) A DNA sequence: the variable-number tandem repeats (VNTR) in vrrA from Bacillus anthracis isolates.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

No, and until it is I would take it with a whole shaker of salt.

Newsmax is overratted and overused here at FR. me three. David Limbaugh had an article there once about a movie about some colonel that some film festival REFUSED TO SHOW!!! OH NO!!!
so I looked at the festival, and every film was something like "a history of the CIA destabilizing gov'ts around the world" "how the US keeps the 3rd world down" "how the US sucks" "the US ruined the world" etc. So I emailed him and told him to check up before writing articles and he sent me a whiney reply about how someone he trusted gave him the story.
