Officials say al-Qaida operatives may be fully trained airline pilots
MSNBC.com ^ | 12/22/03 | NBC

Authorities raised the terrorist threat assessment over the weekend after new intelligence indicated that operatives of Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida terror network, possibly trained and licensed to fly passenger jets, may now be pilots for some foreign airlines, ideally positioning them to carry out suicide attacks, U.S. officials told NBC News on Monday.

Reinforced cockpit doors intended to thwart hijackers after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks would now protect any terrorist pilot at the controls, the officials said on condition of anonymity.

Authorities would not describe the terror threats in detail publicly, but the U.S. officials told NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski that the threat alert would remain at “orange,” or high, through the end of January, which they said was an indication of its seriousness.

Not liking reference to "rural area" in east as potential target.

Or southwest. Yesterday someone was mentioning they'd heard Las Vegas was one area of concern...

Those events will have hundreds of local police, private security, federal law enforcement, etc

Could not a plane do the most damage at such an event (bowl game)? I suppose jet fighter interceptors could nearby. but at all events?

Muslims in the USA will be just as disrupted and scared as non Muslims. I imagine the emphasis will be on making sure all Americans are abiding by whatever rules are dictated in the aftermath of a large scale WMD attack.

"Based on past experience, top officials would be french-kissing Ibrahim Hooper and that big fat Muslim who's always on TV."

Demographics - it's ALL about DEMOGRAPHICS . .

Demographics "There is a demographic catastrophe happening in Europe that nobody wants to talk about, that we daren’t bring up because we are so cagey about not offending people racially,” he said. “And rightly we should be. But there is a cultural thing as well. … By 2020, 50% of the children in Holland under the age of 18 will be of Muslim descent.” He even drew attention to the birth dearth in the West.

“And don’t forget, coupled with this there is this collapse of numbers,” he said. “Western Europeans are not having any babies. The population of Germany at the end of the century is going to be 56% of what it is now. The population of France, 52% of what it is now. The population of Italy is going to be down 7 million people.”

The irony is, they would be once again using our freedoms (and laws) against us. Would passengers know if a plane were off course?

Most airlines will let you operate your GPS in the cabin. My Garmin GPS V is plenty fast enough to report speed, altitude, direction, ETA to destination and show a map of current location.

The Cowboys or the Packers should beat the Eagles then.

The Packers could beat the Eagles. The Cowboys would get annihilated, like they did two weeks ago.

Chavez Bombshell?
A defector’s testimony links the Venezuelan strongman to international terror.

http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/comment-osorio010803.asp

On January 5, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's former personal pilot dropped a bombshell that has been ignored by just about every major U.S. news organization: The Venezuelan president, according to the pilot, gave al Qaeda a substantial sum of money following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

"They said law enforcement agencies were looking closely at two rural locations — one in the East and the other in the Southwest — that were believed to be high on the terrorist target list.

"Most troubling, the officials sad, were indications that al-Qaida may already possess a radiological weapon, or so-called “dirty bomb.” They did not elaborate.

Two rural areas? Nuke Plants?

If we're ready to use the H-Bomb on Syria and Iran, how come we can't ban all Flights from Islamic Nations?

Bush ought to make this MAD policy very public - if we get hit again then we use nukes on Iran and Syria.

What about Lufthansa or Air France with Islamist French or German citizzens as pilots? How about a "shoe bomer" type. Jamaican-English with a Islamic bent?

Other than a college football stadium (seasons now over), where do you find large crowds in rural areas in the east in the middle of winter?

Why, the outlet mall, of course. Many of them are located 20 or 30 miles away from the main city but along the interstate.

Dream on...... If this happens we will be so worried that our response not look like its tareting muslim pilots we'll train 1/2 of Iraq and Afghanistan and Iran to fly planes and then set quotas for all US airlines forcing them to fly the things.

Don't get me wrong. I like your idea and it is the only one that would work. Its just lately I really doubt we'll wind up doing the right thing......

Don't bet on that. Just because the god of diversity has gotten a taste for innocent blood, doesn't mean the politicians are ready to let go of a good thing. They will make sure fat citizens are sacrificed regularly and often on his altar as long as they have the force behind them to do so and the sheep continue to go baaa.

Islam is one diversity too far, it is the 180 of civilized behaviour and civilized society. But don't count on the Fed to get rid of the problem they created. They will continue to call those opposed racists, refuse to call the problem a problem, and will happily have the army blow your head off in the defense of Islamics should riots insue.

u fear won't happen in DC. Pilots flying into DCA have been vetted.

It appears that us simple folk just don't rate the same consideration. This is one of the many things that annoys me. If pilots need to be vetted to fly into DC, then they should be vetted to fly at all...anywhere. Lovely double standard.

Many bowl games coming up over the next few weeks, plus pro football season is still in full swing. The rural reference is a puzzler, though. Most stadiums are located in cities or very close to cities.
