Haven't felt any of the aftershocks here in Santa Maria, but we just lost our CATV signal :-(

There was a fascinating book in the early 70s called the LATE GREAT STATE of CALIFORNIA.
It was complete nonsense, but this book did apparently start the myth that California could "fall into the sea", which it can't.

I noticed on one of the MSNBC panning shots that a sign on the side of the collapsed building said "< something> Jewelers" along with a street sign on the corner of < something> and 12th.
Knowing that Paso Robles isn't a large town, I went to Yahoo Yellow Pages and found this:
Pan Jewelers
They maintain a website with a building photo.
I stress that all this is very specualtive at this point---very speculative, and I hope that I am wrong.

Confirming one death from the quake. :-(
Now KRON-TV is reporting a second fatality.

The book did not start this myth and it even said it was an old myth at that time. It merely used the pretense to set the scene for a discussion of the economical powerhouse that was and is California...

Just got off the phone I was able toget through to a friend who lives in Templeton. She said she was OK, but the quake shook really hard, she almost fell.
She was able to get through to her husband, who was in Pasa Robles when at the time it hit. He's OK too, but said there is alot of damage there(Pasa Robles).
You might try phoning your relative again, and if you get the message that the lines are jammed, keep hitting the redial button a few times. It worked for me.

The clock tower was right above the Pan Jewelers store. It's totalled.
See link at 331 for closer view.

Wow. Are this many aftershocks normal? I'm an EQ newbie (albeit a tornado veteran).

Completely normal. Will go on for weeks, even months, with the frequency and size of them slowly declining, and possibly total in the thousands.

As I understand it, neither LA nor SF would slip into the Pacific. Rather, the land between the two cities would fold upon itself, and the two would become close neighbors.

I remember it well. My son was a baby in the crib. I woke up and ran out of the house without thinking. My wife actually remembered to grab the baby. What a hero, huh?

The last camera pan from MSNBC showed the fountain across the street, so sad to say---thats the place that collapsed.
So sad, so close to what should be a happy time.
Prayers.
