I Believe I Just Witnessed Attempted Voter Registration Fraud

Today as I was leaving my local grocery store a woman was standing at the exit doors holding a clipboard with a Dennis Kucinich sticker on it. She stated she was representing Dennis Kucinich and was asking people who were leaving the store if they were registered to vote. She stated she was registering voters.

I was very pressed for time at the particular moment as I was late for an appointment and unfortunately felt that I couldn't stop to speak with her or confront her then and there. After my appointment, about 30 minutes later I returned to the store. The woman was gone. I spoke with the store manager Mr. ***** who confirmed he had asked her to leave as that activity was against store policy inside the store. He stated that other customers had reported the woman to the customer service desk which was how he was alerted to her presence. Mr. ****** relayed that the woman stated she had been to several various stores in the area this morning trying to register voters for Kucinich and had most likely been turned out of all of them.

Interestingly the store manager indicated that store policy would have no problem with this woman standing out on their sidewalk, i.e. a public place, to conduct this activity, "like the Boy Scouts selling candy". I pointed out that there was no comparison in the two activities and that voter registration required verification of citizenship and age and needed to be done by state or county officials. (sheesh!)

Unfortunately Mr. ***** didn't get the womans name. He was a bit flustered, trying to cover his butt and wanting to make sure I wasn't mad at him or the store. I made sure I remained positive and pleasant throughout.

When I told him that the woman was registering voters for Kucinich he said, "I don't even know who Kucinich is?" I had to tell him. A fine example of the voting populace.....

You're in Tennessee, though.

It shows a specific list of locations where one is permitted to register to vote, and a requirement for two forms of identification.

Becuase the candidate was Kucinich might you be talking about an incident in Ohio (where I happen to live)?

If so, what the person was doing is entirely legal in Ohio -- assuming that they are following the proper procedures.

This is also the state where Tom Daschle won his first election by 139 votes, and Democrat Tim Johnson was reelected by 524 votes in 2002. If you think there's voter fraud going on, speak up NOW.

I don't believe that is illegal, actually. I did similar things for the Clinton 1992 campaign (ducks to avoid flying objects). Yes, I worked for that campaign. I was 17--what can I say? I think most of the restrictions involve campaign signs near voting places, but registration is pretty open, mostly because registering for a party doesn't necessarily mean you will vote a certain way.

They put their DL#s on the registration forms. It was up to the people at the Registrar's ofc to verify by checking the numbers.

Unfortunately the manager didn't get her name.

I Saw no stacks of forms but she was clinging onto her clipboard to show off the Kucincich sticker on the back.

I couldn't figure out why she didnt seem to be particularly interested in accosting me.....then I realized my Bush-Cheney 04 pin is on my coat!! Bwahaha

I really don't know if she was gathering names, drivers licenses, personal information or what. All I know is that she had been all over town trying.....

I think election laws very by state. Here in Washington we have the "motor voter act" where every drivers license applicant over 18 are asked to register. They are barred from asking if the applicants are citizens! They must tell the applicant however, (a recent addition to a 10 year law), you must be a citizen of America.

I'm a GOP precinct committee officer and even I have a stack of registration forms. I take a stack when I doorbell. I only hand out forms to conservatives!

Seriously, once in a while some very odd people hang out outside our grocery store, too. I've been approached by some strange people and one followed me to my car one time. He's lucky he didn't get a face full of pepper spray.

In CA, voter registration forms can be filled out anytime, anywhere, and anyone can take forms anywhere they want and have people fill them out, then turn them in later.

I think this is so in almost every state. Republicans and Democrats do it all the time.

Nor do you need to be able to speak English.

I had to get a new driver's license at the Massachusetts RMV. At the end of my business, the clerk asked me if I wanted to register to vote.

Obviously I'm already registered. But I took a look at the registration form. It did not ask anywhere AT ALL whether I was a citizen.

I asked the clerk whether I had to prove I was a citizen to register. She looked at me blankly and then searched the form.

In tiny print above the signature line was a boiler plate statement, and buried within that paragraph was a statement like: "I hereby certify that I am a citizen of the US." It was very easy to miss. If I hadn't asked, I never would have noticed it.

But she said it was not policy to ask for proof of citizenship, and I could easily have registered if I was an lllegal alien.

So much for government officials being better at making sure only citizens vote in US elections.

When the RATS passed "Motor Voter" several years ago (with a "liberal" helping hand from republicrats) they just about threw voter registration to the wind. Many of the checks and balances went out the window. That's why Rats can now get away with registering illegal aliens.
