SADDAM HUSSEIN CAPTURED

Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been captured in his home town of Tikrit, according to reports.

There has been no independent verification of the news but Sky New's Foreign Editor Tim Marshall says the source of the news is usually reliable.

The US Defence Department says it has had no confirmation of the claims, which come from Iraqi Kurd leader Jalal Talabani, says the Iran news agency IRNA.

Hundreds of exultant people have taken to the streets of Kirkuk, firing weapons into the air in celebration.

A press conference has been announced for 12pm GMT.

In Baghdad, a spokeswoman for the US-led operation notified reporters that a "very important" announcement will be made at the press conference.

The long awaited time to witness the Iraqi people dancing and rejoicing in the streets for their new delivered freedom has come. It makes me have chills of joy. I have to shed a few tears. May God bless these people.

Some of the Iraqis stated if Saddam was going to go down like a woman, then he should have surrendered to the Americans many months ago.

Good morning, Captain and fellow West Coaster. I'm up too. Wouldn't normally be, but I fell asleep with the radio on and the urgency of the news announcer woke me up at around 4:30am or so. Great, great news.

Has anyone seen it on CNN?

Yes, I am watching CNN. They just finished showing about 50 men marching down the street. The men are now at the square in Baghdad were their pulled down the first statue of Saddam. Now they are showing people rejoicing waving flags.

Are the DUers committing suicide en masse?

I checked in one them to see what flavor of kool-ade they had. I learned the following:

1.) The U.S. had Saddam for sometime. This is a diversion to take the Haliburton thing off the news.

2.) It isn't even Saddam.

3.) It doesn't matter if it is Saddam or not.

4.) The 'dancing' in the streets was staged. The celebration at the news conference was staged.

5.) Osama is already captured/killed, but W is waiting until next fall to bring him out.

Hehehehehe. I wouldn't be surprised if Baghdad Bob was one of the detainees who were rousted out of their cells to ID Hussein for the coalition. Speaking of the coalition, God bless all those Brits, Spaniards, Poles, Aussies, and other great partners of ours.
