President Bush secretly landed an hour ago and is currently eating Thanksgiving dinner at my undisclosed location. Anticipate a press release after he takes off.

I believe that the President was flying TO Baghdad in AF1 (the 747) as it has been reported that a British pilot, who spotted AF1 in the air, asked the AF1 pilot "is that AF1" to which the President's pilot said "no, it's a gulfstream 9." The British pilot reportedly understanding something was up merely said "oh."</> Somewhere en route, a British Airways pilot thought he spotted an unusual plane from his cockpit.
"Did I just see Air Force One?" the pilot radioed.
There was a pause. Then came the response from Air Force One: "Gulfstream 5" -- a much smaller aircraft.
Another pause. "Oh," said the BA pilot.

Sir,
Your comments suggest that you believe it necessary to have an absolutely secure environment when the POTUS travels into a combat zone.
The reason the trip is so remarkable is that this POTUS has demonstrated a willingness to take personal risk in order to make a political point.
The factor that makes this trip "hot shot" is that the trip is clearly dangerous.
We have become too accustomed to a POTUS who is a wimp.
Well, I doubt that any US President has entered a combat zone as treacherous as Baghdad since Madison faced British troops in Washington.
Frankly, with Al Queda's continuing activity, the POTUS has already faced direct attack.
Travelling to Baghdad to clarify exactly which nation and which "team" is in charge is highly appropriate.
Since the war on terror is a propaganda war, this was a great shot to take.

I am betting the place was surrounded by more air power than had been seen in months. My bet as well, not to mention some very over aggressive spec. ops types.
Me thinks the the next thing we will hear on the news is how "poor Iraqi's were roughed up prior to the President's visit for no reason what so ever, in the surrounding area".
Was the poster right or wrong? I'm not the one to say. But this administration sure has a way of covering all it's bases.
I especially like that this happened on the eve before rama-dama-ding-dong ends..
This President has NUTS!

That is still after the fact. No it wasn't check the previous posts ChiefKujo made. It is obvious to anyone who took the trouble to check out his previous posts that he is in Iraq! There are lots of leftists who monitor Free Republic. Perhaps a few would know how to contact people associated with Al Qaeda.

I would be shocked if ANY member of Congress was told about this. There's a few known leakers, and the Dems would've loved to have scuttled this trip. It's been stated over and over again today that word of this was kept extremely close to the vest. GWB has been burned before by "certain" Congresspeeps .. so I'm not buying it. If Laura wasn't even told until Tuesday, and some Secret Service weren't told ..I don't think the "need to know" cascaded to Congress.

That is very true however GW had already been on the ground for an hour and was going to leave in the next 90 minutes. An hour and a half is not much time to plan an attack on a mess hall.Definatley a judgement call. Also I am sure there is more than one mess hall in BD.

This was a very bad day for the left :)Not for all, I am sure there were some members of the left in the audience that welcomed the presence of the CIC over in Baghdad.

ChiefKujo - Thank you, thank you, thank you a thousand times! I love this president. My brother-in-law, watching the breaking news said "that's it, I'm quitting the democrat party and switching. Democrats disgust me, and this Bush is doing all the right stuff!".
A bit hard getting thru 1700 posts (as of my getting somethin in right now), congrats for this thread!

Which ever plane the President goes in, is it called Air Force One. Thats a fact. Not true. The C-2 President Bush flew to the carrier Abraham Lincoln was called "Navy One".

Please tell your b-i-l "welcome home". I'm real proud of him for seeing the light.

>>Which ever plane the President goes in, is it called Air Force One. Thats a fact.
Bzzzzzt. Wrong. When the president boards a military aircraft, it becomes "(Insert service name) One."
Thus - the trip to the aircraft carrier was Navy One. The Green helicopter that takes presidents from the WH to Andrews AFB is Marine one - the commonly taken aircraft flown by the Air Force become Air Force One. And, if a president was ever in an Army Blackhawk chopper - it would be Army One.

I read your post first thing this morning. Before I read it, I was bone tired from cooking and cleaning (I cooked everything we had for dinner with no help). After I read it, there was a bounce to my step and my democrat in-laws couldn't figure out why I was so cheerful.
I didn't tell my in-laws about President Bush's trip to Iraq because I didn't want to ruin my thanksgiving by having to listen to them. Today, during dinner, it was my secret and it kept a smile on my face.
My heart was with my President today and this was one more thing I had to give thanks over.

I would be shocked if ANY member of Congress was told about this. I have noticed that there has been several posts regarding whether or not Congress members knew about this trip. My take on this after reading some of the articles regarding this I believe some of the Congress members were aware of it being discussed back in October but it had not gotten any further. But after the President made his decision he informed Laura, he informed his daughters, he had a telephone conversation with Dick Cheney and informed a minimum close admin people (no Congress). Congress members only knew it was being banted about in mid-October.

Dear ChiefKujo
When I heard that Bush was in Iraq this morning, I just knew that there would be a FReeper in attendance. I just got home and sure enough, you were there. And the really great thing is you were the first person out with the news. Congratulations!
God Bless you and all of our military personnel for all that you do to keep us free. May God also Bless your families for all the sacrifices that they must make to support your service to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are always with you. I am proud that you are there and I am proud that you are a member of Free Republic. Please stay safe.
