Top editors at the NEW YORK TIMES panicked and ordered a story killed after London-based reporter Sarah Lyall filed a dispatch alleging rumors of Prince Charles and a sexual affair with one of his closest advisers!

The story appeared on the TIMES's internet website for 20 minutes -- before top editors ordered it immediately removed, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

But this new twist looks to be far more serious, concerning, as it almost certainly does, a Diana-related item known as the "rape tape," which is either a smoking gun or nothing at all, depending on how one sees these things. It is a cassette tape that Diana kept in a special mahogany box — along with other things like her divorce papers and a signet ring from one of her lovers — and that came into Mr. Burrell's possession after her death.

On the tape, according to news reports, George Smith, a former royal valet, accuses an unnamed male courtier of raping him and, even more explosively, says he saw a senior member of the royal family and a royal servant engaged in a compromising sexual act.

Irritatingly, no one seems to know where the tape is now; Mr. Burrell has said it got lost somewhere. But Mr. Smith himself said last week that publicly revealing his allegations would have "terrible consequences," while Mr. Burrell spoke darkly about the tape's "very personal and very damaging" contents, making it clear that he knows exactly who is alleged to have done what to whom, and when.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reported that members of the royal family were plunging "ever more deeply into paranoia" as they wondered "whether one of their circle is going to be named as gay."

This sort of thing has been around a long time. Edward I's son was reported to be gay and was dealt with rather summarily with a hot poker.

That said, if this is true, Charles will never be king. And if the boys turn out to be buggerers too, that's the end of the German monarchy.
