[history]
Monday, November 3, 2003
A new message was posted in the last few hours by the Jeddah-based al-Qaeda-linked Al-Islah (Reform) society calling on Muslims to flee New York, Washington and Los Angeles in advance of major al Qaeda attacks in those cities. This is revealed by DEBKAfile.
The message accuses the United States of predetermining its end (doom) by its policies. ?The Jews rule the Pentagon by remote control and (are the cause) of Muslims being killed in every corner of the world. The United States should therefore expect more blows.?
The message is signed on behalf of the al Bayan (The Threat) movement by ?your warrior brother, Abul Hassan al Khadrami?.
Our Muslim expert identifies the name of the signatory as belonging to a Yemeni from Hadhrameuth, the Bin Ladens? place of origin where Osama enjoys substantial tribal support.
DEBKAfile?s counter-terror sources stress that warnings appearing on these forums are taken both very seriously and with caution by the intelligence services keeping track of the terrorist network?s electronic traffic.
Last November, Jeddah-based fundamentalist forums addressed a message to an Al Qaeda member, saying whoever understands ? understands; whoever knows, knows, but we are marching towards an operation that will take us to Paradise. Three days later, the Mombasa Paradise hotel was blown up killing 12 Kenyans and 3 Israelis and a failed shoulder-launched Strela anti-air missile missed an Israeli airliner at Mombasa airport.

Daleel is the first "Muslim terrorist-wannabe" I've ever heard of who erronously spells the word 'losing' as 'loosing.' That's one I haven't seen any foreign students goof up, and seldom if ever have I known a woman to do it. It is, however, a very common error of American males- at least in recent years.
See:
... tell them that we have been loosing all the wars with Al-Qaida since they ever started;
The biggest sinners on that spelling error I've seen are just plain ol' testosterone-filled young Freepers and the occasional human debitage from DU.
Daleel sounds like he's recently been in our public schools.

For the first time in a few months, I drove by the Pentagon Wednesday afternoon. The parking lot had lots of cars, more than I would expect to see on Christmas Eve. The Virginia State Police were out in force as were the Humvees, parked under tarps to keep the machine guns dry.
The crew in one hummer looked to be asleep; I sure it was a ruse to lure the enemy in. :)
I also noticed the entrance to Fort Marcy Park on the GW Parkway was gated shut.

Does that strike anyone else as a strange aside in a terrorism/security concerns article considering we are facing the first EVER case of Mad Cow disease in the US? Yes. I wouldn't put it past al Qaeda OR domestic PETA/green types to consider going after the US economy that way. If someone gae the Chiron bombers the right stuff they would be the sort to use it.
*******
But I need to mention Las Vegas, (which was mentioned a few times here on this thread...) Las Vegas was where back in '98 two men were being investigated over anthrax concenrs. One of those men had two civilian biochem labs, one in the US and one in Frankfut, Germany, home of yet another al Qaeda cell. Both had claimed before 911 that Iraqi students had been referring to a strike on NY City, etc, and they claimed in 98 that they were going about the region administering anthrax vaccine to people to prepare them for this event- presumably the people in question were their fellow white separatists, or something like that.
Las Vegas is also where the 9/11 hijackers hung out after each practice flight, I suppose to run over their game plan and work out any bugs. (Amid other things.) They may have been meeting people there.
There was also just after 9/11 or on that very day an incident where Nevada troopers pulled over a foreign national under suspicion of terrorism, I believe he was Iranian, and this was reported in one source in Las Vegas. This was not all that surprising except the story dissappeared as quickly as it was posted, and I only had a glimpse of it. The individual was named but for the life of me I cannot think of what it was. Has anyone else heard of arrests or detentions in Las Vegas related to terrorism in 2001 or 2002?.
And there ws the Al Qaeda Detroit Cell's Omar Shishani, who is also linked to Las Vegas.

I'm a lawyer here in Las Vegas and to answer your question there were no arrests or detentions (to my knowledge) here relating to terrorism in 2001 or 2002. There was, however, information that an alleged Al Queda cel that was broken up by the feds last year in the Detroit area had apparently scoped out Las Vegas hotels (including the largest, the MGM Grand) and that information had been provided to the feds that Las Vegas may indeed have been an Al Queda target - information which was NOT shared at the time with local authorities, causing some friction between our local police department and the F.B.I.
Further, what is really bizarre is that despite all of the references to Las Vegas now as a potential terrorist target (as many of us have read here on F.R., MSNBC, and various other sources) that appear to have come via leaks from the feds, the local authorites (including the Governor and Clark County Sheriff) all say to a man that they are still unaware of any specific threats and have not been told of any by the Department of Homeland Security.
In today's Las Vegas Review-Journal, Sheriff Bill Young was quoted as saying that he himself has read about these rumors, but that when he himself contacted Tom Ridge's office he was basically given the brush off.
I'm honestly not sure what to make of all of this but it is quite concerning...

Then there was some guy, who spoke Arabic and while talking on his cell phone he accidentally overheard two other Arabs talking, whom he suspected may be terrorists, reported it to the FBI, who dismissed it and even made fun of the guy.
I thought he was very credible -- the info referred to some plot about destroying LV. Considering that AQ spend years to set up an attack, they may have been planning the attack, which is currently imminent.
I don't remember the guy's name, so I can't look up the detail of what was said, but one of the thing that made it more like instructions, than a conversation is that one guy repeated the same thing very carefully twice and the other said some thing like "I got it".

Thanks for reminding me of this one.
I think he was later discounted because he couldn't pass a lie detector test.
(snip)
(CBS) The FBI says it is investigating a Nevada man's claim that he picked up a conversation in Arabic on his cell phone during which someone said there would be a "hit" on the "day of freedom."
"We've initiated a full-scale investigation to determine if this constitutes a threat, and if so, what kind of threat," says Daron Borst, a FBI Special Agent in Las Vegas.
Borst says agents have interviewed the man who reported the conversation, Michael Hamdan, and plan to question him again Friday.
In an interview with CBS Radio News, Borst says the FBI has "been made aware of the gentleman's claim that he intercepted the phone call, and we are taking it seriously."
Hamdan, 54, said he's a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Lebanon and speaks Arabic.
Hamdan said he was trying to call his wife on his cell phone Saturday when he heard Arabic voices.
"They said in Arabic, not even a word of English, 'We are in the city of corruption, the city of prostitution, the city of gambling, the city of unbelievers,' " said Hamdan.
He says he also heard a voice say: "We are going to hit them on the day of freedom."
Hamdan said the call lasted about 90 seconds before the line went dead. He said he believes the men were talking about July Fourth.
"I was frozen, absolutely cold," Hamdan said. "I was sweating. I couldn't believe what I heard."
Hamdan said he reported what he heard to the FBI early Sunday morning.
CBS News Affiliate KLAS-TV reports the FBI is now trying to trace the cell phone call Hamdan says he overheard. (/snip)

I haven't heard anything about a lie detector test.
To: FairOpinion
That was definitely my first thought, and I suppose you can come to your own conclusions from readiing the article. To me,this wasn't just a routine general denial to protect our tourist industry; it was a specific denial and specific respones to follow-up questions. It would surprise me if a public official would go on record and blatantly lie that way about something of this magnitude.

I just found more -- instead of thanking the guy, they apparently called him names publicly.

Mayor Goodman Sued Over "Whack, this guy" Remark
By Frank Albano
Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodmans propensity for "off the cuff" remarks, prompted no doubt, by his long and illustrious career as a criminal defense attorney, and a self-proclaimed mob mouthpiece, has been sued by Michael Hamden. The Las Vegas resident, almost to the year, filed a defamation of character suit against Goodman.
A year ago, Hamden reported to the FBI an overheard cell phone conversation among Arabs, discussing a "hit" on Las Vegas. While the feds dismissed the claim for being not credible, Mayor Goodman hearing the accusation went one
better, and offered to "whack this guy." Now, Hamden through his lawyers says he been defamed by the world class lawyer, turned Mayor Oscar Goodman.
Goodman often accused in the press for his candor and bravado, may think twice before, figuratively of course, offering to whack anybody else.
City Communications Director, Dave Riggleman, speaking on behalf of the Mayor, indicated Hizzoner would not comment on the lawsuit, until he has a chance to take a look at it, and that Hamdens credibility is in question.
Hamden says, "By saying what I did was shameful and un-American, he violated my civil rights and assassinated my dignity, my respect, and my good name as an American."
Hamden is Lebanese, and speaks Arabic.
Quoting from a published report, a Hamden attorney said, "Mr. Hamdens reputation, in the community, excited derogatory remarks about him, and held Mr. Hamden in contempt, within the local, national and international community."
Goodman also referred to Hamden as a liar.
Hamdens suit seeks unspecified damages, and he wants a
public apology from Goodman.
