For those still on Big Bear or anticipating departure/evacuation, be advised that Hi 62 was bumper to bumper with nobody moving from Yucca Valley to Hi 10 about an hour ago. 247 and Hi 62 were recommended by the San Bernardino Sheriff's office to be avoided by folks living in the hi-desert.

If you are evacuating and waiting to see which way the fire runs, you may want to get on the road, because it might be so congested below as to preclude egress from a fast moving fire.

Additionally, the third largest solar flare from this morning is anticipated to cause havoc about midnight tonight. Things that might be impacted include satellite communications, cell phones, radio operations, microprocessor operations, and power surges. Last similar flare occured circa 2001/1989. In 1989, the flare which glanced by the Earth has been labeled as a cause for a grid power outage in Canada.

Might be wise to top off your gas tanks prior to midnight and seek a safe zone prior to that time.

Worst case, things could happen quickly without much warning after midnight if winds pick up. Best case, maybe nothing but a midnight traffic jam in the middle of the desert,....I've been through worse than the traffic jam, but would prefer not to endure the former.

Laughlin might be a fun time tonight.

You can be sure I'll check it out (but later -- I'm doing several things at once here)! Thanks for the Revelations tip. Other FReepers may chime in on this subject, too.

CALIFORNIA FIRES: 17 DEAD

Wildfires are still raging out of control in southern California, with the death toll now at 17 and more than 1,100 homes reduced to ashes.

Thousands of people are living in shelters and President Bush has declared the area a major disaster zone.

Satellite pictures from Nasa show the inferno is ablaze from Los Angeles to the Mexican border, whipped up by the dry Santa Ana winds....

For the Escondido residents here:

Channel 10's report fifteen minutes ago that the fire had jumped the lines and entered Escondido was entirely FALSE. About a dozen really tired guys spent the last quarter hour checking it out. Thanks for checking your sources KOGO.

"I have heard that the houses in Scripps region started at $one million price."

Wouldn't surprise me if they were in the $500,000 and up range, but I doubt that all of them were million-dollar houses. But I'm more worried about the other areas of San Diego and San Bernardino county which have burned. I understand eight homes were lost in Santee; that area is relatively low-budget. Lots of homes were lost in Ramona, and other points in that region; same thing. The area of SB county that had the most homes damaged was anything /but/ a millionaire drive. And then, there's always the Simi fire, which was (and still is, I think) threatening a mobile home park...

These are the people who don't have the money to rebuild, nor the resources to easily relocate. These people, I'm worried about. I worry about the other people, too, don't get me wrong... but I worry more about the everyday folks who have lost everything they've spent their life building up.

Scuttlebutt from San DIego,..Some of those military being evacuated from base housing were also being told by the housing folks they would have to pay for their temporary lodging up front before they received a key,...not a good way to boost moral upon returning from Iraq.

Actually I had to drive from Jacksonville to Gainesville during some of this. It was very ugly, but not on the same scale as the current California fiasco. They will lose 10 time as many homes. Comparing it to Andrew is closer.
