"...Cut us "newbies" some slack, we didn't enter Free Republic as people who have never had a coherent thought."
Obviously that statement is not true! (Of course my comment doesn't apply to Graybeard!)

Typical bureacrats - make a law that is unenforcable. Like kids can't smoke - like prostitution is illegal - like gambling on a pool table - like political candiates can not accept cash.

You want a relevant valid statement to try and refute? Try this one: "Cigarette smoking has harmful effects on human health."
Here's another relevant, valid statement:
In a free society, it's none of your business if people choose to take risks.
Unless you're going to present the socialized medicine argument that "society pays for it."
And reveal yourself even further.

I think I was quite clear in my post that the whole issue of employee protection meant little to me. For me, personally, it was simply about getting rid of the stench.
Is that government's job though? What "responsibility" will they take on next?

After-dinner drinks are usually associated with a restaurant, not a bar.By the time you finish two drinks the table could be turned for a full meal.

Because ETS contains Carbon Monoxide, and virtually any prolonged exposure to Carbon Monoxide over the zero baseline level is a health hazard. You may want to take that up with OSHA and the EPA. Those agencies have established criteria other than "virtually any exposure over the zero baseline level."
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Response <-- Link
"The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established a maximum safe working level for carbon monoxide at 35 parts per million (ppm) over an 8 hour period, in the general work-place. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established that residential levels are not to exceed 9 ppm over an 8 hour average."
IMO, the safe level is somethng other than zero, even for continuous exposure.

Well, you addicts have fun here. Try to find a valid argument somewhere, as you haven't found one yet. In fact, you're not even close to finding one. Invalid and stupid arguments that smoking isn't harmful or that the government can't regulate restaraunts and bars or that the government can't regulate smoking in public places because other things are harmful as well won't get you anywhere.
Those of you dumb enough to maintain that cigatette smoke is not a health hazard really need to start reading the literature on the subject. If you have any questions about your secondhand smoke being a health hazard, drop by any asthma-related web site.
Have a nice day, addicts. You don't get as many as non-smokers do.

I'm responsible that smokers are too selfish to continue to frequent the restaurant ? Then we will take our money some place else, how about that?
Air is clear, patrons scarce after smoking ban
Glowach says some non-smokers have started coming to the bar, but not enough to compensate
Is this what you want? Especially since the economy is hurting so bad? To put more people out of work just because YOU don't LIKE IT?

The last time I looked at a CO detector the minimum detectable of amount of CO was 9 PPM. Thanks for proving my point.

Unless you're going to present the socialized medicine argument that "society pays for it."</quote.
But even if that lie is posed as a valid argument, it has been been proven many times over to be false. Cigarette smokers pay an inordinate amount of tax for their habits, and to top it off, they statistically die sooner. Therefore cutting out social security, medicade and medicare etc.
They put MORE into the system than they take out. In my state they pay 1.3Million/DAY in cigarette taxes. (I am an ex-smoker and am sick of the anti-smoking pinheads).

Once again, it bears repeating, the weakest among us expect the government to legislate our preferences and make us competitive! The chains are not exactly the weakest among us. You have a problem that the market creates large companies that have disproportionate sway over laws and regulations. Unfortunately, that is the free market at work. It isn't pretty but thats how it works. Competition is done at all levels not just in the sales field.

Steely Glint has been here about as long as I have, which is not long at all but the fact that he is a "newbie" doesn't make his opinions without merit. My opinions, like his I am sure, were not formed by being a long term member of Free Republic. I am 58 years old and thats how long I have been forming opinions. Using your implied criteria, if I am older than you, my opinions are worth more than yours. ...Cut us "newbies" some slack, we didn't enter Free Republic as people who have never had a coherent thought. ...By the way I disagree with Steely Glint on the issue.Being a "newbie" yourself as you readily admit, you might not understand why the immediate questioning of someone who is lately registered with FR.
The fact is that most of the "arguments" Steely Glint has presented have been hashed and re-hashed over again, and for those who have been around for a while, it's kind of like saying "been there, done that".

By the time you finish two drinks the table could be turned for a full meal.False assumption that the restaurant is filled to capacity from opening to closing.
Sorry, doesn't work that way in the real world.
To: Steely Glint
"Cigarette smoking has harmful effects on human health."Once again, we are not talking about first hand smoke. Try to stay on topic.
"Restaurants and bars in America are already subject to government health regulations."
I don't need to refute that statement. Since it's talking about scientific, proven, with peer reviewed studies health hazards, let's put the same test to ETS.
Now what cha got to say?
