Gov. Bush calls special session over Terri Schiavo

TALLAHASSEE, FL -- According to a news release sent by the Terry Schindler-Schiavo Foundation, Florida Speaker Johnnie Byrd will introduce "Terri's Bill" during the special session Monday.

The bill would put an immediate moratorium on all dehydration and starvation deaths in Florida. Meanwhile, supporters of Terri Schiavo showed up Sunday outside a Pinellas Park hospice.

Doctors say Schiavo has been in a vegetative state since complications from a heart attack in 1990. Her husband was granted a court order that her feeding tube be removed, saying his wife wouldn't have wanted to be kept alive.

Thanks for the update....Byrd was on FNC tonight saying that he doubts any court could supercede the power the Legislature gave the Governor!

He says that the tubes cannot be taken out of Terri once reinserted.

Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns regarding Terri Schiavo. I value your input on this important matter.

During the past year, the Florida House has faced difficult choices in many areas. We have crafted legislation regarding the budget, healthcare, workers’ compensation, and prescription drug relief for Floridians. Presently, legislation is being considered to address the victims of legal dehydration and starvation deaths.

Every Floridian has a right to determine their own treatment, and anyone who has executed an advanced directive has the right to have his or her instructions carried out. Where there is no disagreement among family members, present law does not appear to create reasons for legislative intervention. However, the Terri Schiavo case raises troubling concerns that the proposed legislation would address.

The bill passed by the House in Special Session “E” on Monday night would allow the Governor to issue a moratorium to stop contested legal dehydration and starving deaths in Florida in certain instances. The moratorium would give the Legislature time to assess our current law.

With our pledge to protect the most vulnerable, I strongly believe that someone needs to be a voice for the voiceless like Terri Schiavo.

Again, thank you for contacting me. I will take your comments to heart and give them careful consideration as we address the issue of contested legal dehydration and starvation cases.

Very truly yours,

Johnnie Byrd

Speaker

No need to "eat crow" IMHO. Do you think Jeb & the Legislature would have taken action to protect Terri if freepers hadn't jumped on them with all fours this past week?

I don't mind writing a thank you to Jeb & a few others, but they only did the humanitarian thing. No medals of valor are due.

You are a very wise individual.

So, we have 15 days? Where does the fight go now? Pressuring the legislator to pass a permanent measure within the next 2 weeks? Bringing media attention to bear on this mess?

I'm just a humble foot soldier here, waiting foe some direction on where to channel my efforts.

What now?

Thanks...also saw Byrd on FNC tonight. He said that no court could supercede this new law which gives the Governor the power to stop court ordered death by starvation .

Oh, here we go again. I get home from work, log on, and find yet ANOTHER disrupter ranting and raving and picking endless fights.
I sense a pattern here, and I suggest we do the right thing, and TOTALLY IGNORE THEM.

We saw what happened recently with that character "strela", who eventually said "Goodbye" to Free Republic and showed his true colors as a supporter of euthanasia.

These people are only here to taunt, mock, and attack Terri's supporters and friends.

WE DON'T NEED THE PRODUCT THEY'RE SELLING, under the pretense of wanting to "discuss the issues".

I just read somewhere where a FReeper is concerned that this ENTIRE thread will be locked because of the fighting, and that we might lose some important info, like the vote count today in the Senate.

FREEPERS, we've won a nice victory today.

Let the trolls cry in their beer. We don't need their nonsense tonight.

Who is judge Baird? What will Schiavo try to do to overturn this new law? Why do Hospices want people to die? How does the Hemlock Society come into all this?

We need research assistance.

Terri is in a Persistent Vegetative State

The press is clueless about these medical terms, but since a court (Judge Greer's court) has "found" her to be PVS, I guess they can fall back on those findings for their articles.

The last few days of reading these threads, and emailing and calling everyone I could, as many times as was needed, has changed my outlook. I had just about given up on the state of this nation. Now, I think I've seen The Almighty move to inspire people to work together to stand up to evil, and stop its plans.

Until now, I didn't know how big and powerful the Death Culture is, and what political and international support it has. The fight for Terri only leads me to ask, "What to do next?" I think one of the most effective things has been to expose the Death Culture for the evil it is, over and over again. As someone said on another thread, exposure makes them scatter like cockroaches do when you shine a light on them. I'm going to make a point of exposing them as much as I can.

Some ideas I'd like to see implemented: 1) Finding out which doctors have written pro-euthanasia articles, and compile a central bibliography. 2) Learning from individual doctors which version of the Hippocratic Oath they swore. If they swore one of the modified ones, find out if they'd object to swearing to the original. 3) This might be the most important - investigate and document any instances of bean counters at HMO's and health insurance companies influcencing doctors to adopt pro-euthanasia outlooks or procedures.

Thanks to the freepers and all others who helped save her life, and may have started to turn the tide.

I appreciate your response to my earlier post. Sorry I was not able to get to it until so late in the evening. It appears that the legislation is narrowly tailored. I hope you can understand my earlier concern.

Meanshile, if I left any false impression, perhaps I can state here that while my convictions have not changed on the sanctity of life, the only solution to the culture of death we live in is the gospel. Not Free Republic. Not politicians. Not republicans. Not conservatives. The only reason why Terri Schiavo is being rehydrated tonight is because of the operation of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of so many in authority in Florida. The only thing that will ultimately save the lives of babies is the influence of God on the minds of young women.
