If he didn't lose legal standing over her when he tried to strangle her, then he certainly lost it when he moved in with his "girlfriend"(second wife) seven years ago and now has 1 child with her and a second on the way.

I don't know the facts of the case--and I don't know Florida law--but this guy sounds like a horrible person. Obviously, he wants Terri out of the way.

I haven't heard anything more yet. I just emailed my contact to ask if there's any new information on it, but given the discouraging events in court today, and the information in post 1189, I'm not feeling particularly optimistic.

The man is a coward. He's lived the good life, and he doesn't want to offend anyone; at least not anyone that matters. Unfortunately, his universe of "anyones" that matter seems to be limited to his political opposition, i.e., the pro-death camp, AKA "the left".

This is typical GOP behavior. Pander to the opposition, and kick your supporters in the teeth. I honestly believe there is something pathological driving this need to be "liked" by the liberals. The day the GOP stops trying to prove to the left that "we're really nice guys" will be the day they accomplish something positive.

Until then, their main purpose in life seems to be to make used car dealers look like paragons of virtue.

Date set for Mother Teresa's beatification


The Vatican has announced that the Pope has chosen 19 October - the 25th anniversary of his pontificate - as the date for the beatification of Mother Teresa.

The announcement was made by Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples during a press conference called to present World Mission Day 2003.

Mother Teresa qualified for beatification after Vatican officials acknowledged that she was responsible for a miracle in which an Indian woman was cured of stomach cancer through her intervention.

Mother Teresa, who founded the Missionaries of Charity, died on September 5, 1997 at the age of 87.

According to church law, the beatification process cannot begin until at least five years after a candidate has died. But Pope John Paul personally intervened to waive the waiting period for the beatification of Mother Teresa.

Oh, I thought it was Saturday (the feast of St. Luke is tomorrow, the 18th). So Sunday is the day for her beatification. Well, we should continue to pray for any intercessor to intervene on Terri's behalf, whether their name is Teresa or not! Mother Teresa would have given Terri food and water, maybe she is from up in heaven! She would do it if Jesus told her to.

I think we have lost. I think a system failed Terri. I think she will die within 48 hours, not from starvation, but from dehydration.

As much as we hate to admit it, we must acknowledge that Terri was and is a very ill woman. The best legal minds on the Gov's team concluded there was nothing he could legally do, and they are entirely correct.

That said, If I was running the family legal team, I would be making an equity argument to the sitting justice of the USSC covering this circuit.

My position on this would be an equity position and ask for a stay, just as they do in execution cases. The concept of a stay is; the full court may not agree with my final argument but if this woman dies, then my argument will be moot. Keep her alive, at least until you can hear my argument(S)

I would ensure that many of the whackos we have seen on TV, supposedly supporting Terri, but like the Elian case, just looking for personal face time, were off the air and stayed off. All this talk about fixes, criminal charges, crooked judges, "new age" cures, just makes our side like whacos some of us are.

Then, while the legal case was proceeding, in a delaying mode, I would ask the Gov to convene the legislature in special session and pass a "Presumption of Desire to Preserve Life Bill."

That bill would put the onus on the person wanting to end life to present "clear and convincing evidence", perhaps even "clear and uncontroverted evidence" that ending life support was called for, as opposed to the typical less-stringent "preponderance of the evidence" civil standard.

It would give special standing to relatives who are willing to care for, (and pay for the caring for) a relative. It would not ban all life support termination (it shouldn't), but would give greater weight to those who wish to continue life.

I think it would pass very quickly, with some Democrat opposition. The Dems would want state payment for all terminal care, so the law would not "discriminate" against "poor people."

Jeb would sign it in a hearbeat. Their might be an ex-post facto problem getting it passed in this case, but it's certainly better than the current options.

My sad best guess is that we will not win this one, but like the Cubbies, concentrate on the next one.

My point was - who are we to be so arrogant (no offense intended) as to decide the quality of life inside a failed body.

Hawking has the benefit of having become able to express the brilliance of his mind using computers and voice synthesis.

Would he want to live if he couldn't? Would THAT be inhuman torture to him - to be trapped with brilliant thoughts and no way to express them?

I don't know. He may. I wonder if anybody ever asked him or if he ever expressed an opinion on euthanasia. But, the point is that just as we have no physical knowledge of afterlife, we have no knowledge of another's mind or any measures it may take to survive within itself.

Yes, I know, I have been following this for weeks and know that this whole thing is one big tangle of corruption. My thinking is that this should have been pursued in criminal court, instead of civil court. Judge Greer has had complete say-so because everything has been litigated through him. Terri's attorney's motions have all been to him. His bias is breathtakingly obvious, so the whole thing has been an exercise in futility. It may be too late, I realize, but what other options are there? I was just wondering if this has been tried.

I don't have the statute handy, but I know the law is listed pertaining to guardianship rules. I also realized a long time ago that Greer does not care a whit for the laws, and the higher courts refuse to admit that Greer is either corrupt or inept. But perhaps there is someone in the criminal court system that actually has some morals. I doubt it, but who knows? I was just wondering if it has been tried?

Instead of going after the judge, why can't Michael be charged with neglect? This could be a new case, as he is now in violation of the Florida guardianship law that states a guardian cannot deny basic care (food and water) to their ward. He may have the right to pull her feeding tube, as it is considered artificial life support, but he cannot deny her right to eat through her mouth.

I think that is what they were asking Gov. Bush to do.....
