Gay frat seeks approval from UT-San Antonio07:33 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 15, 2003
SAN ANTONIO - A group of gay students is seeking recognition as the first gay fraternity at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Alpha Lambda Tau, which currently has four member, wants to expand its membership to all men. It's goal is to improve overall campus diversity, said Chris Forbrich, the group's president.
The organization will go before UTSA's Interfraternity Council on Wednesday to make its case for inclusion.
"We want to make a place where gay people themselves could feel comfortable participating in Greek life," Forbrich said.
"It's no different than any other fraternity, except that it attracts gay men," he said.
The council's general assembly is expected to vote on the matter Nov. 5. The general assembly, made up of representatives from other campus fraternities, will make a recommendation to university officials, who will make the final decision.
Misty Kelley, the program adviser for leadership and Greek life at UTSA, said the university has always accepted recommendations from the council in the past.
Kelley said to become a new fraternity, group's must show what positive attributes it would bring to the campus and its potential to recruit members.
"We want an organization that is going to make the Greek community stronger," she said.
The group must also receive approval from the nation chapter of Alpha Lambda Tau. If approved, the UTSA fraternity would become the third Alpha Lambda Tau chapter, joining chapters at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Arizona State University.
There appears to be support on campus for recognizing the group as a fraternity.
"If they want to have one (a gay fraternity), why shouldn't they?" UTSA junior Abel Esquivel said. "As long as it doesn't hurt anybody."
Julian Rodriguez, president of Kappa Sigma and council vice president, said most students see the group as "a regular fraternity. They are after common goals, and they will be accepted as such."
But sophomore Joel Aldo Diaz disagreed.
"Basically, the view is not against homosexuality itself. It's more against the fraternity itself," Diaz said in story for Wednesday's edition of the San Antonio Express-News.
"They're telling the world what they do in their bedroom," he said.

(I'm a Teke)
Wow. Poor guy.A friend once told me that he has had a number of occasions of being approached by gays like that (he's not gay, btw) and it's quite uncomfortable for him he said when it's happened. I told him that I must have led a sheltered life, that's never happened to me - thank GAWD !! I would hate it !!
Nothing personal, but you remind me of one of our old Rush chants:
If you can't go Greek, Go Teke
And if you can't go Teke, Go Home!
I had some Chi Omega friends, who insisted Alpha Chi Omega were really Almost Chi Omegas.
I Felta Gi Thi. Ramma Ramma Ramma.
Just kidding; not meant nastily. I have a few gay friends and got those joke names from one.
LOL ! I bet that was funny ...
If you want on the new list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
[As i mentioned, the B/C & JD! lists are going to float into and out of whack over the forseeable future, while I try to cobble a rig back together for myself. My apologies for any incovenience or misunderstandings in this time frame. New signups/removals may be flaky in this time-frame as well; please bear with me, and keep in mind you may have to FReepmail me more than once for me to get it done. Thanks again!]
