" killing all vegetation for 20 years would be an obvious necessity. Any idea what is used?"

No, I don't. But it stays dead for years.

As I noted earlier, too, it's super fun when a field is hit by a hail storm (pictured), everything breaks, and the toxic cadmium pours into the ground, making it completely unsuitable for growing crops, ever.

Isn’t this what the Cylons did to the Earth in Battlestar Galactica?

Dang, I was wondering how tough PVs were. Doesn’t look like they could take bullets if hailstones can shatter them.

If you haven't seen this article, go look at it at the link. The FR version is excerpted so go to the source for more of how the GND will lead to a bleak life for Americans:

Those solar panels were damaged by hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Another solar field designed to withstand hurricanes went undamaged:

Update: After going through more NOAA imagery, I found some good news. The giant solar field built by TSK Solar (originally falsely said “Canadian Solar”) (below) came out relatively unscathed after facing harsh winds from Irma and Maria. These panels are specifically designed to outlast hurricanes. Each panel is built several meters off the ground to avoid floods and reinforced to withstand winds of category 5 hurricanes (156mph).

Solar panels can be built to withstand hail, too.

How often are the panels have to be cleaned without losing energy efficiency? What happens if a sand storm might occur? 😕
