Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton broke her silence Tuesday on sexual harassment allegations against former film studio executive Harvey Weinstein, who has donated to Clinton's past campaigns.
"I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein," Clinton said in a statement. "The behavior described by women coming forward cannot be tolerated. Their courage and the support of others is critical in helping to stop this kind of behavior."
The New York Times published an investigative report last week on Weinstein, a major Democratic donor, alleging the Hollywood film mogul paid off sexual harassment accusers for decades. The Weinstein Companys board subsequently fired Weinstein after the allegations against him grew.
Weinstein told the Times last week: I appreciate the way Ive behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologize for it. Though Im trying to do better, I know I have a long way to go.
On Tuesday, The New Yorker published further accounts of sexual assault and harassment by the film executive, including three women who said Weinstein raped them.
Until Tuesday, Clinton remained silent on the topic, even as conservatives including Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr. criticized the former first lady for failing to criticize Weinstein.
"Weird, Hillary has been really quiet about Harvey Weinstein. You would think she would be all Over this. #WhatHappened?" Trump tweeted.
Weinstein donated heavily to Clinton, the Democratic National Committee, and the party's senatorial and House campaign committees, according to nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics data and reported by the Associated Press.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, other prominent Democrats, and the DNC said they will redirect past Weinstein donations to charities.
The president, for his part, told reporters on Saturday that he was "not surprised" about the allegations.
Ive known Harvey Weinstein for a long time. Im not at all surprised to see it," President Donald Trump said outside the White House.
IOW, Hillary was unaware of all the rumors and substantive reports of Weinstein’s crimes, that have been circulating for 30 years, but she’s qualified to be in charge of National Security?
Highly snarky and insulting comments can be found under the original article.
I suppose Hillary was shocked and appalled by Bill’s too?
Always the last to know.
Looks like she wasn’t prepared for anything.
“The behavior described by women coming forward cannot be tolerated. Their courage and the support of others is critical in helping to stop this kind of behavior.”
That doesn’t even make sense.
These worthless people have to huddle up with their advisors, writers, lawyers etc etc and craft a response to everything. Trump walks up to the mike and lets it fly.
...AND that’s what I love about him!
Comments don’t work for me. Could it be because I’m using a Linux pc?
Hillary’s not ‘shocked and appalled’...she’s just jealous.
Hillary:
This is what happens when you explore the universe and find Uranus.
The sickly fatso wretch traitor is lying yet again. Throw her in prison for her many crimes and she will really be “shocked and appalled”. She tolerates and supports her rapist husband, why would harvy’s behavior upset her?
Translation:
“I spent 10 days waiting to see how the public winds were blowing and wondering how his obviously unimportant conduct might impact me politically. I wish I could take a poll like the good old WH days. I’ve finally decided to just feign outrage and of course keep the money.”
Her condemnation wasn’t strong enough or fast enough therefore she condones this vile behavior.
Sure she will and I’ll bet she’s PO’d he didn’t harrass her.
Wonder how many speechwriters she needed to come up with that??????
She and Weinstein were next door neighbors in the Hamptons.
She knew about it. She was involved.
