Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton broke her silence Tuesday on sexual harassment allegations against former film studio executive Harvey Weinstein, who has donated to Clinton's past campaigns.
"I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein," Clinton said in a statement. "The behavior described by women coming forward cannot be tolerated. Their courage and the support of others is critical in helping to stop this kind of behavior."
The New York Times published an investigative report last week on Weinstein, a major Democratic donor, alleging the Hollywood film mogul paid off sexual harassment accusers for decades. The Weinstein Companys board subsequently fired Weinstein after the allegations against him grew.
Weinstein told the Times last week: I appreciate the way Ive behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologize for it. Though Im trying to do better, I know I have a long way to go.
On Tuesday, The New Yorker published further accounts of sexual assault and harassment by the film executive, including three women who said Weinstein raped them.
Until Tuesday, Clinton remained silent on the topic, even as conservatives including Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr. criticized the former first lady for failing to criticize Weinstein.
"Weird, Hillary has been really quiet about Harvey Weinstein. You would think she would be all Over this. #WhatHappened?" Trump tweeted.
Weinstein donated heavily to Clinton, the Democratic National Committee, and the party's senatorial and House campaign committees, according to nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics data and reported by the Associated Press.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, other prominent Democrats, and the DNC said they will redirect past Weinstein donations to charities.
The president, for his part, told reporters on Saturday that he was "not surprised" about the allegations.
Ive known Harvey Weinstein for a long time. Im not at all surprised to see it," President Donald Trump said outside the White House.
Is she pissed she wasn’t harassed? So does she cry that he’s just like her husband?
These worthless people have to huddle up with their advisors, writers, lawyers etc etc and craft a response to everything. Trump walks up to the mike and lets it fly.
“shocked and appalled”, sure, but DEFINITELY keeping the money!!
Illiarily loves sexual predators like Bill and Harvey!
I imagine ANY important so-called Progressive being caught and people caring would be both shocking and appalling to other leftist in the DNC.
HA! Riiiiiiiight.
What's the demonicRATS' favorite charity? The Clinton Foundation, of course.
She says she didn’t know about Bill and Monica either.
She is shocked and appalled that he has been accused. This puts her squarely next in line. Shocking and appalling.
Well, okay then. It's been said that the first step on the road to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Just how long do you suppose you will be on this road.
We'll give you ten years. If you haven't straightened up your act by then, we're going to lower the boom on you and give you five years.
After that, it'll be a year by year thing.
You've been warned.
I can’t wait until all the progs go after Hitliary.
Second thought: "he's trying to stop the photographer, doesn't want to be associated with this fleabag..."
I wonder if this whole thing isn’t the result of pressure from the finely-calibrated hand of President Trump, who knows exactly where a little pressure can be most profitably exerted, and what to do with the movement that results.
> “I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein
That’s some odd wording. This could be interpreted to mean the women never should have made such revelations. And the next sentence refers to “The behavior described” rather than referring to Harvey Weinstein directly.
Yeah, right, like Herself just DIDN’T know.
Much like Herself knew nothing of Slick’s indiscretions.
But none of the money is being returned. All of it had gone to a “charity”, the Clinton Family Foundation.
Up until today there was Clinton radio silence.
They must have taken time to run some focus groups to determine how they should think.
