Every detail was designed to mark Hillary Clintons moment in history from the glass ceiling at Manhattans Javits Center, where her supporters were gathered, to her and hubby Bills suite at The Peninsula hotel, selected so she could personally see Trump Tower, home to the foe she was set to crush. Then came the voter returns. In this exclusive excerpt from their fascinating new book Shattered, political reporters Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes take readers inside Hillary Clintons world on the night that changed her life and the nation forever.
Hillarys communications team decamped to the Javits Center in the Hells Kitchen section of Manhattan, where preparations for her victory party were being made. The venue, which would fill with Hillary aides, donors, friends and well-wishers over the course of the day, was chosen in large part because of its distinctive feature: a glass ceiling. If everything went as planned, it would be the glass ceiling of the presidency that lay shattered under Hillary by the end of the night.
A handful of key aides remained in the campaigns Brooklyn headquarters for Election Night, but the top brass, including [campaign manager] Robby Mook, John Podesta, and Cheryl Mills, joined Hillary and Bill Clinton on their floor at the top of The Peninsula hotel, a five-star facility a block from Trump Tower. The Clintons had their own suite, and the rest of the floor had been rented out for staff workspace and for aides, including Podesta and Abedin, to have private bedrooms.
At the start of the night, the Javits Center was electric: it had the buzz of a debut performance on Broadway. Outside, a seemingly endless line formed down 40th Street, near artists who had sketched Hillarys portrait next to Obamas and vendors who sold buttons....

All petty and done with the money of others.
I stayed up all night, and it seemed they were deflated soon after 9 pm EST. They obviously knew things they weren’t sharing (maybe couldn’t confirm), but the tone really changed after 9 pm.
The problem with 24 hour news channels is they have to make up news to keep people watching; the fact that there haven’t been mass layoffs of people who made the most outrageous projections (the most obvious “fake news”) indicates this is just standard operating procedure.
I’m more surprised that people who’ve exposed the media agenda (see Jake Tapper with “states we need to win”, for example) haven’t been replaced with people who at least aren’t publicly in the Dems’ corner. Once you keep someone like that on, there is no way to even feign impartiality. Trump is right to slam the enemedia with every breath; they are the propaganda arm of his (and our) opposition.
“No, Schale explained, Trumps numbers werent just big, they were unreal.”
My favourite line. It really does never get old. Just like my favourite from the debates...”Because you’d be in jail”. lol
Your comments are spot on!
No that Charlston Hesston look alike, the Republican Strategist was the exception. He wanted to punch someone. Probably Trump had he walked into the room.
My version is the kindle edition.
Not a GA item, but go through the 25 pictures at the source, it will brighten your day!
Judging from McQueeg’s insane behavior, we might have dodged a bullet, there, too.
Hard to believe there might have been a candidate who was worse than Obama.
Some of the raw vote numbers are wrong in that we used Nov numbers before all the recounts.
Every day I awaken to hilLIARy not being President I smile. What an absolute criminal liar, wretch and miscreant. Lock her up!
If I had young children this would a great bedtime story ;)
I’m sorry...I don’t buy it all. I don’t believe a word. I don’t think for one minute that Obama wanted her to concede for the good of the country. I do not for one minute believe she was this calm. I think this book was written to give us a dishonest view of what went on and to portray her in a much better light. They threw in some realism but I’ve no doubt the ignored a lot of stuff.
Bingo. That’s the word I was looking for:”sanitized.” I don’t believe this account for one minute and never have. I do not think for ONE SECOND that Obama wanted her to concede “for the good of the country.” Let that sink in FReepers before you buy this story...Obamas primary concern was for the “good of the country?” Yeah right. I’m sure that’s what he said. If you think that your past being gullible.
Why should she apologize to Obama? After all, it wasn't her fault, it was those pesky Russians.
The way the authors told the story of her anger and sadness- would this have been written about a man? If not, why not?
A telling excerpt of the article:
“Fox News called Wisconsin for Trump a judgment that other news agencies declined to validate for hours.”
This is typical. Studies have shown how quick they are to declare democrat victories, but drag their feet in declaring republican victories.
Why should she apologize to Obama?
Why should she apologize to Obama?
Random notes while skimming article:
- “...Hillary and Bill Clinton on their floor at the top of The Peninsula hotel, a five-star facility a block from Trump Tower”
Cocky, preparing to gloat over the opponent’s inevitable loss, never considering that she might have to stare at the winner’s luxury skyscraper _home_ mere feet from her briefly-rented abode (wherein one wouldn’t want a blacklight).
- “Clintons campaign anthem, Fight Song, blared across the room”
That sums her problem up as well as anything: generic, no spark. They needed a fight song to rally around ... so they picked “Fight Song”. Golly. How. Inspiring.
- “No one in the party had a better feel for the state than Schale, ... who had worked on the Draft Biden campaign in 2015”
The best poll wrangler the campaign had pushed for gaffe-o-matic BIDEN? If your best is deranged, it won’t go well.
- “Hillary sat stone-faced, trying to process the unexpected and abrupt reversal of her fortunes”
Calm before the storm. Her life’s work crumbling, her standard demeanor “angry control-freak b!tch”, ... when she goes quiet, flee.
- “[Noting Brexit, Bill had] seen the trans-Atlantic phenomenon of populist rage at rallies across the country, and warned friends privately of his misgivings about its effect on Hillarys chances”
Did he bother warning _Hillary_?!? Crashing vote number is rather a late point to bring up the point of “oh, by the way, your opponent is getting 1000-to-1 rally numbers over yours”.
- “The president wants you to concede, Mook told her”
There’s a great ultra-slow-motion video of a bullet hitting a glass pane.
There’s a Simpson’s frame-by-frame clip of “you can see the moment his heart breaks”.
There’s a video showing a single frame where a manhole cover is launched into space as the fastest man-made object ever.
This is where that moment occurs.
- Im not ready to go give this speech.
And, Hillary, that’s the moment you proved, objectively beyond all doubt, that you’re not presidential material.
- “Congratulations, Donald, she said”
And so her icy heart shattered.
- “Abedin approached her once again, phone in hand. ... Mr. President, [Hillary] said softly. Im sorry.”
And so ends the abridgment of the book, utterly failing to mention what we all know: that having had her life’s goal utterly destroyed by a Cheeto-haired fast-talking reality-show-host political couldn’t-be-more-outsider, she went bat$#!^-crazy in ways none of her staff, nor the hotel cleanup crew, will ever discuss.
