Why are Trump voters so angry about immigration?
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | June 10, 2016 | Peter Grier

Posted on 06/10/2016 4:23:47 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Building a wall is one of Donald Trump's big applause lines. But why? Some research surveys suggest that many Trump followers aren’t so much anti-Hispanic as they are worried about the perceived effect of immigration on their culture and pocketbooks.

Donald Trump’s supporters have negative views about immigrants, particularly those who entered the United States illegally. That’s not a news flash. Mr. Trump’s vow to build a wall along the southern border – financed by Mexico – remains one of his biggest rally applause lines.

But what, specifically, is behind this anger? Is there anything about undocumented immigration that even Trump voters see in a positive light?

We’ve run across a couple of interesting studies that bear on these questions in recent days. The first is a Pew Research “feeling thermometer” survey that shows one reason why Trump voters, even more so than Republicans in general, think immigration is bad for the US.

The reason? Trump backers appear much more likely to believe that a growing number of newcomers in the US “threatens traditional American customs and values.”

Fully 60 percent of Trump supporters have at least a “somewhat warm” response to that statement. Only 29 percent have a “somewhat cold” response, disagreeing that immigrants are threatening the cultural foundations of the US.....

Low birth rates? R U kidding? those are temporary

Temporary? Birth rates have been declining for decades, with the exception of the high poverty areas. Those babies born decades ago are now swinging the elections in their favor.

When things get easier the population will grow again but that cant happen if you let in a tidal wave of immigrant.

How are things going to get easier, when we've shipped many of our jobs out of the country and are now using the Fed's printing presses to pay for all of the goodies?

Trump may be our last chance to turn this around, but even that will only be temporary if we don't start making babies again.

So we agree then. But why import a single additional person into the USA if this is the case? In a shrinking economy this is incredible burden on the indigenous population.

If you break it down the USA's population has grown 3 fold since the end of WWII. We have enough babies. We don't need babies from third world countries where the average IQ is 85-90.

World ranking of countries by their average

If you break it down the USA's population has grown 3 fold since the end of WWII.

Much of that is from immigration, and from poverty torn inner cities.

We are also an aging population because people are living longer, which only makes the strain harder. Someone has to pay for the benefits "you" expect to collect, and "you" didn't produce enough future tax payers to pay for them.

Shipping the jobs they would need to pay for "your" benefits isn't helping either, but I think you and I agree on that.

But why import a single additional person into the USA if this is the case?

We've always been a nation of immigrants. At what point did legal immigration become the problem?

In a shrinking economy this is incredible burden on the indigenous population.

It isn't a shrinking economy, but an economy that is being exported.

And yes, we have been a burden on the indigenous population.

No not really. After the second generation yo are no longer an immigrant. In 1965 only a tiny percent of the USA's people were immigrants. Then Kennedy open the flood gate. So you are full of it. You are hung up on birthing. Weird.

If you want to pretend dropping birth rates had nothing to do with this, run with it. I’m not going to tell my legal immigrant friends they have to leave the country because of it.

Hey suck up it is the government job to control immigration. So you shouldn't have to do that. Those people shouldn't be here. It should be out of your hands.

It’s a stupid question, from which no intelligent answer can follow.

You say that as if you have the votes to make it happen.

The author does correctly say that Trump supports are especially upset about those who have entered the country illegally. However, the author goes on to call them “undocumented” and then just immigrants later. The author does not get it.

Yes. I’m angry about legal immigration too. If they are not a benefit to the country they shouldn’t be let in. We have enough low life welfare scum of our own.

Illegals are obviously law breakers. They go on welfare and government programs because since they are illegal they can not get hired, are undocumented and can’t speak English.

The porous border is so wide open and unprotected that criminals and criminal enterprises cross it daily. The Drug Cartels and Terrorists use the open border to cross into America to do harm.

People along the border are seeing violence on a daily basis committed by these people. They only seek to import their culture and left wing socialist values.

The Democrats want to bring them in by the truck loads using the Cloward and Piven strategy of overwhelming Americans in order to import new voters and destroy our Judeo-christian traditions, values and society.

They bankrupt the country since someone has to cloth and feed them and help them get the health care needed to survive. They bring diseases that they get from poor third world nations or from travelling in uncharted territories to get to America. They then spread the stuff across the country. The poorest of the poorest come. They also are indoctrinated easily or arrive loving a progressive-socialist ideology.

We don’t get the best and the brightest. Instead criminals and bad people have been sent up here by the overloads in the third world countries to get rid of their problems and overcrowding of jails. Or we get people who are unwilling or unable to assimilate into our culture.

Thus the anti-American left wants to promote this in order to “finish” off America as envisioned by the founders and make it into a welfare state and a socialist nation.

store owners are against customers because they are against shoplifters.

I meant doctors, nurses, businessmen and businesswomen who intend to invest capital in America and create businesses, brilliant scientists, etc.

Sort of what Australia does.

I would like to see a single documented case of the last 40 years of a relative or friend sponsoring a relative and promising to support them permanently without creating a new permanent welfare charge for the American taxpayer. Not permanently. I had to promise to support them until they became citizens or had worked for 10 years, I believe it was. I had to prove I had the assets to support them. They were not to be entitled to certain government benefits. Now, perhaps they do this to scare people and do not enforce it, I don't know.

The whole process from initial application until the issue of visas took 10 years. 5 years to approve the petition and a 5 year wait for numbers to become available. They finally got here about 5 years ago. Back in 1979-80, I worked in Thailand, helping resettle Lao and Cambodian refugees in the U.S. IIRC, they all had to have a sponsoring agency, church or similar. Not like today's free ride.
