Utah Sen. Mike Lee said he believes Ted Cruz would be the GOP presidential nominee if the convention is contested.
"On successive ballots, I think victory is more likely to go to Ted Cruz," Lee, who is a backer of the Texas senator, said during a radio interview Wednesday. "We have to remember that most Republicans around the country have voted for someone other than Donald Trump."
A convention would become contested if no candidate gets 1,237 delegates beforehand. On the first ballot, delegates are typically bound to the candidates their state picked in the primaries or caucuses. On subsequent ballots, however, many are released and can shift to another candidate.
"I would not be a bit surprised if Ted Cruz won in that circumstance, in fact, I'd be surprised if he didn't. On second ballots, on successive ballots, you're going to see more and more delegates moving to Ted Cruz," Lee said.
Donald Trump leads the pack with 743 delegates, followed by Cruz, who has 517, according to Bloomberg's count. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who left the race last month after a loss in his home state, has 171 delegates, followed by John Kasich, who has 143.
It would not surprise me if they have proof of Ted’s mom’s Canadian citizenship before Ted was born. That would be a slam dunk campaign killer.
I’ve put the keyword “delegates” in threads about this subject. Go take a look.
Are you sure that Cruz’s delegates are Cruz loyalists? That game can be played both ways.
Mike Lee also believes in magic underpants. So there’s that.
If he can’t win on first why would he win on second?!
>>Not only his lying, sleazeball, womanizing, but also his eligibility to run.<<
All the legal arguments that applied to obozo’s eligibility will apply to Cruz. In fact Stare Decisis will make it even quicker than those were turned away. They boiled down to:
1) Lack of standing
2) Lack of a specific harm
What this REALLY means that if someone was born on Mars, ran for POTUS and won, the only mechanism for removal would be impeachment.
How is your number 2 possible? “Declared the candidate?” By whom? Through what mechanism?
I see. The Corruptocrats in DC know best. The voters should, as Priebus said, sit down and shut up so their betters can make wise decisions.
The same kind of wise decisions the Permanent Political Class has been making for decades. It’s worked so well, who would want to change it?

There’s that good old religious bigotry I’d been missing.
If Trump isn’t conservative, why is Ted copying so many of Trump’s positions?
I only know what I read in the funny papers and from FReepers who are delegates. What are your sources?
Mike Lee is Mormon now?
Fagetaboudit
Is it better if we phrase it like this?
“Trump has failed to bring the party together despite his current lead in the delegate count.”
That he continues to be unable to unite the party shows how weak his candidacy is for the general election.
>>How is your number 2 possible? Declared the candidate? By whom? Through what mechanism?<<
I am pretty sure the GOP election committee can do so after the official votes are counted but you bring up a good point — I need to do some research.
“They know very little about Cruz”
Cruz has been running for president for about a year. He has spent millions of dollars campaigning. If voters don’t know who he is after campaigning in their states for months and saturating the media, then he needs to give it up.
You're totally delusional. Cruz only has Bush's path to victory. If alienates Trump supporters by stealing the nomination after winning less than 1/3rd of the states, he'll lose 20% of the base.
His negatives are almost as high as Hillary and he hasn't even been attacked yet by the media and Dems.
All the sex scandal allegations will come out and so will his pastor's call for the death penalty for homosexuals.
Cruz would be a zombie candidate.
Cruz bots are delusional.
Of course you can say that about every candidate, but the theory is that Cruz is the second choice of many Kasich/Rubio...etc. voters.
Got it "smart" guy?
