Oh my: Rubio surges four points overnight in South Carolina, now in second place at 20% (Trump 33%)

It’s just one poll, but it’s a doozy. If that WSJ/NBC national survey yesterday was the best data Cruz has had this year, this new one from ARG must rank among the very worst.

Oh goodness, that sounds so awful.
How I wish the GOP could get their act together and save us.

I do not like him, however, he holds up in the polls.
I hear all the stories about him, SC seems sold on him.
I am awaiting the outcome Saturday night.
Pray for the best for our country.

Number time
1. Trump moves the needle. You have to have that to win in November. McCain, Romney, Dole, etc., made my eyes roll back into my head, so I know that they had the same effect on millions. I’ve watched a few Trump speeches and have never been bored. A president MUST MOVE THE PEOPLE TO MOVE CONGRESS. Remember how Reagan got a Dem Congress to pass his plan? He had the people on his side. Cruz will not have that.
2. Trump has all the right enemies, so I know that at the very least- THEY THINK HE IS OVER THE TARGET.
3. If Trump does nothing else but banish political correctness forever he will have saved our country. Our problems don’t get solved because you can’t say things like, “No more Muslims.”
4. If we don’t seal the border and begin removing the semi-permanent Mexican/SA annexation we will never win another election. Trump started his campaign by promising to do just that. He took heat, and never backed down.
5. It’s my bedtime.

The cabana boy needs some serious negative attention.

Rubio is the absolute LAST person I want to see as VP, and if he somehow is the GOPe nominee from a brokered convention I hope Trump goes independent, because I think he would win in that three way race.

“Very very good news. Can’t wait until St. Cruz is done.”

Cruz’s day will come. He is a pretty young still and unlike Trump, The Godlike Baal, actually has a coherent philosophy. As time goes on and Trump destroys everyone who disagrees with him (including the truebelievers), there will be buyers remorse. How long do you think Trump can run the country as a cage match before people get sick of having their heads beat in?

Remember when GW Bush could do no wrong?

Well, we shall see what happens now that he was a no show at Levin’s conservative review conference. Expect Levin, Cruz and Jeb all to pile on him. It won’t be pretty. I suspect someone will link it to his Senate no shows...

Rubio is a pretty boy empty suit, and I can’t stand him. The idea of him being one heartbeat away from President?

Shudder....

Rubio would get trashed in a general, no matter the Dem nominee. He’d be another Romney-type candidate. Empty suit and no substance.

We shall see. Super Tuesday is when it really gets interesting. Right now, the primary is Trump’s to lose. But Cruz does have a path to win. So does Rubio, unfortunately.

Free Republic is doing its best to help Rubio by vicious infighting over Trump and Cruz.

I am a Cruz supporter who, like many of us, could support Trump in the general, provided he stays conservative. Otherwise, I personally am tired of supporting the least worse candidate.

But it is very puzzling to me that Trump suddenly went on the attack against Cruz even though Trump had the primaries sewn up. Then all the Trump followers made it their mission in life to attack the most conservative candidate in the race. I constantly see Trump supporters rushing to nearly every thread to put in some stupid, juvenile dig at Cruz who is still the most conservative candidate in the race. I have to wonder if they are being paid by Trump or Planned Parenthood, because it is not clear which hates Cruz more.

Nevertheless, unless Bush and others drop out, it is starting to look more and more like a brokered convention. Neither Trump nor Cruz supporters are going to switch sides in the primaries. Count on that. But what conservatives need to do is quit bashing the two best candidates because they will be FORCED to work together to avoid the GOPe picking a bad ticket.

A Trump-Rubio ticket would be a disaster and would lose. A Trump-Cruz ticket would be unstoppable. It would unite the base and run circles around the competition.

Trump will not win the white house without Cruz supporters. Cruz will not win the white house without Trump supporters.

Does everyone here want Rubio to win?

If Trump wins, he MUST have a solid conservative as VP. He will lose the general if he shifts left. He will not get the vote of many conservatives. Is he better than Hillary? Far, far better. Night and day. But half-hearted conservatism gives conservatism a bad name. We have been down this road too many times.

If Cruz wins the nomination, he will need Trump’s support and endorsement. He needs to tread lightly. He does not need to go scorched earth on Trump.

If Trump wins, he will have to get Cruz’s supporters. This could be by picking Cruz as VP or maybe some other spot. Perhaps attorney general.

What I think is far more likely is that Trump will get the most delegates but will not have enough to get the nomination. He will have to cut a deal. He could cut a deal with the GOPe and pick Rubio or a similar candidate. Or he could pick Cruz. With Cruz he would have to take some simple action like seeking a summary judgment on the citizenship issue. Cruz will have enough delegates to team up with Trump to get the nomination.

Trump supporters lack grace and rationality above all else. Just make sure you and your fellow lemmings don’t trample any innocent bystanders on your way over the cliff.

“Cruz is at least a citizen at birth. Rubio is not even a citizen.”

I’m no fan of Rubio, but I think the 14th amendment makes him a US citizen at birth. (His parents were both legal residents when he was born.) Now, it is debatable whether he was a natural born citizen at birth. Under British common law, jus solis considers place of birth (i.e. jurisdiction) the main factor in what is “naturally” conveyed. But, according to the principles of natural law referred to in the Constitution as the Law of Nations, citizenship is “naturally” conveyed at birth from the parents’ citizenship, i.e. jus sanguinis.

I don’t think that on the whole it is the Trump supporters who are posting the name-calling attacks on Cruz. I think it is the GOPe, who are engineering this attack as they try to knock out all alternatives to Bush, Rubio and Kasich.

If they succeed in knocking out Cruz, there will be a vociferous attack on Trump, under names of different FReepers who have joined in the last six months and are being quiet right now. Just wait.

Nailed it. Trump and Cruz are the only viable conservative candidates. Trash talking either of them only helps the GOPe.

I think the most recent contretemps started just before the SC debate. Trump took down a negative ad on Cruz, and expected reciprocation. Instead, Ted dialed up his attack ads on Trump. And as we all know, you don't turn down a peace offering, or at least a chance for detente, with The Donald.

Now Cruz sleeps wit' de fishes.
