Back in December, I was at a small event in a Las Vegas bar; CNN's Jake Tapper was interviewing Sarah Palin. He asked which candidate she'd most like to grab a beer with. Her answer? Donald Trump.
Trump, of course, has been sober his whole life. But the moment perfectly encapsulates the Palin-Trump romance. Because in addition to endorsing a beer run with a man who doesn't drink, she also just endorsed for the presidency a man who is neither a committed conservative nor an anti-establishment rogue.
Trump's long history of liberalism is well known. He was once a registered Democrat who supported Democratic candidates, from Bill de Blasio to Hillary Clinton. He has said publicly that the economy usually does better under Democrats. At times he's supported legalizing drugs, raising taxes on the wealthy and embracing isolationist foreign policies.
But what's most jarring is the positions he's held on a number of issues that are particularly important to Palin.
In the past, he called himself "very pro-choice." Yet Palin - who made the very courageous and compassionate decision to have a baby she knew would be disabled - is unbothered.
On guns, he once supported a ban on so-called assault weapons and longer waiting periods to purchase a firearm. That should be deeply disconcerting to Palin, a Second Amendment firebrand who once said, "If you control arms, you control the people."
And Trump has supported universal health care - expressing admiration for Scotland's single-payer system as recently as last year. Palin spent years denouncing Obamacare, which is many steps short of a single-payer plan, as "socialized medicine."
These aren't minor policy differences. The beliefs long embraced by Palin and long eschewed by Trump are fundamental to conservatism. That Trump has suddenly gotten religion - on issue after issue - should be met by Palin with suspicion.
If his world-view weren't enough to make Palin cringe, Trump's inauthenticity as an anti-establishment candidate should be. Palin admirably took on what she called the "good old boy network" to become Alaska's first female governor. Now, she leaps to support a guy who helped create that network and who thrives in it. In what bizarre world is a billionaire real estate mogul who donates money to Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Harry Reid "anti-establishment"?
Over the past eight years, Palin's influence within the Tea Party has remained strong, but her favorability rating among all Americans has dropped 40 points. Worse, her rating among Republicans has declined more than 55 points.
But despite that waning influence, I've supported and admired Palin for defending life, religious liberty and gun rights, and for being a strong mother to a disabled son and another serving overseas.
The Sarah Palin I knew in 2008 - the one who campaigned tirelessly and many times thanklessly for John McCain, a war veteran Trump has openly mocked - would have seen through Trump's charlatan candidacy. The Sarah Palin I knew in 2008, a devout Christian whose faith was constantly scrutinized by the secular left, would have no affection for a man who is constantly scrutinizing the devout Christian faiths of other conservative candidates.
The Sarah Palin I knew in 2008, who was a passionate and fearless voice for hockey moms, mama grizzlies and women everywhere, all while enduring patently sexist attacks from the left, wouldn't have supported a man who calls other women bimbos and slobs, thinks women who breast-feed and go to the bathroom are "disgusting," and criticizes another candidate for her looks.
That Sarah Palin is gone. Maybe one day, over a beer, she'll tell me why.
Interesting. You bravely run away, like Brave Sir Robin, then as an excuse, cite my purported "childish gibberish", which, of course, is ACTUAL news articles and legal actions from the time.
Sarah Palin had a LEGITIMATE excuse for retiring from the field of battle.
You don't. Yer just a yellaback mouth.
Thanks! Now I don't have to search for it. :)
Thanks for the post.
Sarah did the correct thing by sacrificing her place in Alaska history for the people of Alaska. Dude.
;-)
You say you are praying for Ted’s campaign, and then a statement that Sarah died today? Wow! Just Wow!! How dwelleth thelove of God in you? This kind of statement just shows me how mad that the Cruzbots are that she didn’t endorse little Teddy. maybe she didn’t like the fact that he is joined at the hip with Glenn Beck.
I’ve got news for you - God loves Mr. Trump as much as he does Mr. Cruz -
lol. You are so self important. What a nut. You think she gives a care what you thing. Arrogant as heck you are......kinda gross.
Trump 2016.
Sarah gave an incredible speech for her friend, Donald. You should listen to it. She is still a powerful force in the conservative movement. Today, she nailed it and her place as a true patriot for America’s survival.
What a judgmental Pharisee you are. Jesus despised people like you and had a few choice names for them. You tagline is a joke when you spew your self-righteousness on others. Repent of your own sins and leave the Palins to do the same.
I dunno. I desire her to make me a sammich. :)
We think it's "them".
Examine some posts downthread. :)
Palin is a moron.
IBTZ!
So if your creepy cruz gets in, he will refuse to give up his Senate Senate seat in his first term?
You are a horrible hypocrite. Thank God we found out what a horrible candidate Cruz is before it was too late. God is in charge thank God.
LOL....we thinks it’s “them”....
too funny :)
Sybil, Eve? We just don’t know.
No I’m quite well actually. The reporter in question was well enough to lie to the public about 9-11, which can result in the deaths of more Americans. But he can’t be made fun of? Maybe he should have stayed in bed if he’s too handicapped to try and harm America.
But we should all pretend to be offended by Trump, not a lying liberal piece of crap “journalist”.
Onyx, I saw Sarah’s speech at The Donald’s rally in Ames, Iowa. It was one of the best ones she has ever given. It would be one you would hear at the Convention, and one we would be proud of her that she gave it. Sarah is better than ever and she knows what the issues are. She is better than ever and is a big player in electing Donald Trump as our next POTUS. Go watch that video from the rally. It’s at the end, so it is easy to find.
Sara Palin endorsed Trump because she realizes that only a few weeks ago, Trump singularly upset the whole election apple cart!
Trump set the national agenda with illegal immigration and other issues that the GOPe and their allies desperately wanted to avoid, and now they can’t.
The GOPe was not prepared for this, and as a consequence they don’t have a clue about what to do, hence their almost universal collapse into a pile of quivering jello, flip-flopping like a bag of Mexican jumping beans dumped on a hot griddle.
Trump has exposed those who pretend to be conservative but are really just fronts for big money establishment campaign donors who purchase their candidates with campaign “donations”.
Trump, by actually being a real man, has exposed the other candidates (Cruz excepting of course) and their allies for the weak little sniveling sellouts that they really are.
Trump’s vociferous truth-telling and fearless neutering of the kommie media has been the catalyst that triggered a massive revolt amongst conservative voters who are infuriated at the GOPe Congress doing absolutely ZERO to stop Obama’s agenda, and suddenly the GOP RINO leadership is in full blown panic mode and in full blown retreat, and the SMALL conservative House contingent smelt blood in the water, took heart, and charged in against a weakened, frightened and paralyzed GOPe leadership, and Boehner was taken out as a sacrificial lamb.
Trump is absolutely correct when he says that without Trump in the race, everything would be same-ol’, same-ol. The Joyful Tippy-Toes Turtle would be creeping closer to the finish line, Boehner would still be safely ensconced as Speaker, and there would be no mention of illegal immigration are any of the issues surrounding it by any politician in either party, other than possibly how critical it would be to pass immigration “reform”.
The media are loath to make the connection, but it’s obvious that the Boehner resignation was yet another falling domino, toppling due to the Trump Effect, because Trump’s unabashed truth-telling and fearless neutering of the kommie media triggered a revolt amongst the great unwashed GOP masses which emboldened a few conservative Congress critters to grow a few pairs.
And we wouldn’t even be having ANY of these conversations about illegal immigration and the myriad of other Obammunist issues destroying our country if it wasn’t for Trump. Instead, we’d simply be debating which RINO, GOPe squish would be least likely to be stomped by Hillary, and the GOPe would once again be exhorting the “base” about how critical it is for us to once again vote for the “lesser of two evils”, that is, vote for the GOPe side of the Uniparty coin.
And do note that ALL of the oligarchs and plutocrats are frightened to death of Donald Trump because the billionaires and millionaires can’t buy him like all of the other politicians they routinely purchase, because Trump doesn’t need nor want their money, and the kommie media is frightened to death of him because he isn’t afraid of them either, the bottom line being that Donald Trump can not be controlled by the rich and powerful or the corrupt media, so for anyone who is truly for campaign finance reform and wants to take money out of politics, voting for Trump is the only reasonable choice.
President Trump is really the last hope for this country: if he can’t undo any of the damage wrought by the Obammunists, the U.S.A. is done.
So least we forget, the above, and much more, are called “The Trump Effect”.
Dear Cruz supporters,
If you’re calling Sarah names, mocking her children, and putting down her supporters I think you should all do yourselves a favor and take a walk and clear your heads.
You can be disappointed without being nasty.
Because none of that has anything to do with what Trump will do to straighten the economy, bring jobs back, build the wall, stop illegals, stop Islam insurgency, uphold The Second Amendment, implement an intelligent Tax Plan, renegotiate unlevel foreign trade policies, strengthen our Military and reform the VA, deport Illegal aliens crossing the border, end waste and corruption in government, place ICE agents with local Police Gang Task Forces, end birthright citizenship, end welfare abuse, stop sanctuary cities, deport all criminal aliens and Make America Great again.
That is not a complete list but I feel it is enough to get the point across.
Trump always does what he says he will do. That is how he protects his "yuge" personal brand. He would not have achieved what the has up to now if he did not do. No more political bona-fides is required.
