OVER the last two decades, through Bob Dole and George W. Bush and John McCain and Mitt Romney, it has become an article of faith that the Republican presidential nominee is a person blessed by, or acceptable to, the partys establishment, meaning the elders, the bankers, the cool heads, the deep pockets.
Theres mess along the way brief tantrums by restive voters, fleeting triumphs by renegade candidates but order and obeisance in the end.
Is this the election cycle when that changes?
The twilight of the Republican elite?
Donald Trumps stamina and the ascendance of Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina suggest as much. The three of them, who have led national polls since mid-September, arent just political outsiders, which is the label hung on them most frequently. Theyre instruments of protest by Republican voters unwilling to heed the prompts and protocol that theyre expected to.
For Republicans (and perhaps for Democrats, too) this is a season of rebellion, as the chaos in the House of Representatives vividly illustrates. A consequential share of the Republican majority there have made it clear that they will not bow to precedent, not follow any conventional script, not have anyone foisted on them. No, theyll do the foisting themselves....

Don’t let Carson and Fiorina fool you, they are amnesty candidates, too
“The twilight of the Republican elite?”
Of course I RARELY agree with anything printed in that FISH WRAP, but, Yes, Please!!
Once the msm uses the term ‘ugly’, their options are starting to run dry.
BTW, I notice they feel obligated to include Fiorina when they discuss serious GOP candidates; omitting Ted Cruz for example. It only illustrates their desperation to prop up a leftist woman, regardless of how incompetent.
It’s annoying how they keep trying to throw Fiorina in there. She’s as GOPe as it gets.
“If you call this ‘ugly’, I can’t wait to see what you call the “Bring Back HUAC” desires your libs have spawned in a lot of Americans.
You can call it whatever you like, but once it hits it’s stride, you’ll be doing it from inside a cage with the rest of the animals at the NYT. And none of us will have the least bit of pity for you.
Revolution is what we NEED!!!
It would be ugly if everything were going fine. Everything is not going fine, though. Deficits, debts, entitlement spending, surrendering to dictators, dictator president. These are problems that are not being addressed, so it’s not ugly. It’s necessary. It sure would be nice if the Press looked stone faced into the camera and said, “Entitlement spending at current levels will bring this country down if not seriously addressed, rather than, “Donald Trump’s support comes from the crazies.”
This is a ‘rebellion’ against the ‘same old, same old’ and they are going to get wiped out...this ‘rebellion’ is growing....
We don't want a Bush, Clinton, Carly, Walker, Santorum, Christie, or anyone else..WE WANT TRUMP!!!
Ugly? Guess everything is defined in the mind of the observer. I haven’t see anything more politically BEAUTIFUL since Reagan. Screw the NYT’s...they wouldn’t know a beautiful sunrise if the saw it. The Republican “revolt” is more like a sunrise giving, finally, light to the darkness.
Insufficient obeisance...it appears the vulgarians are forgetting their place.
I don’t think they care to get it.
All they want to know is “how do we destroy” his political standing.
He scares the heck out of them, because they know he’s a man that seeks solutions to problems.
They ARE problems.
This theme is showing up more and more.
Not yet, but I suspect she’s willing.
Ugly
The ugly has only begun. Either there’s a big revolution in the GOP or Democrats win a big victory. Both will be ugly.
That cartoon is an unfair and horrible representation of Obama.
He never reads off papers - he always uses a teleprompter.
In 2016, the Republicans won’t know what hit them.
