At Koch group summit, a restrained enthusiasm for Trump

While thousands streamed into a football stadium Friday evening in Mobile, Alabama to see Donald Trump, a much smaller crowd of committed conservatives unwound at a bar and mused over the good, the bad and the unknown of the unlikely Republican presidential front-runner.

They were volunteers and staff for Americans for Prosperity, a non-profit group funded by industrialist billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, two of the most effective conservative activists in U.S. politics.

According to AFP, 3,600 people came to this year's annual Defending the American Dream Summit from around the country Friday and Saturday, taking in appearances by a handful of the 17 Republican presidential candidates. Trump was not invited...

There does seem to be some sort of rapport between the two, for whatever reason. I’ve supposed that Cruz would make a good choice of VP for Trump. I just don’t see Trump building himself up for the office of President as he is doing while intending to hand it over to someone else.

Exactly. Just because they have rapport doesn’t mean a thing. We’ll see what happens. Reports say they have met on at least 5 occasions. I wonder if Cruz went there for a donation to his campaign? I’ll be he did. (not his presidential campaign) They met previous to that.

I don’t get your line of thinking at all.

He’s clearly been interested in politics for decades (was a national fundraiser for Reagan), has made his billions in growing the family business, truly sees the country in need and believes he can lead us in making it great again.

And don’t kid yourself—a lot of billionaires would love to be president.

Why would Trump want to be president? That’s what puzzles me.

That is one of the easier questions to answer.

Trump has net worth of $10 Billion at age 69. To give you an idea how large that is, next HUNDRED generations of Trump, EACH stands to inherit $100 MILLION.

Trump is currently living a life, most men can only dream about. He lives in a luxurious penthouse, owns the best golf resorts and hotels all over the world, owns a Boeing 757 with gold plated touches for his personal travel.

Trump has raised great kids, who work hard in running his business world. Trump is married to a beautiful woman, who would become a spectacular first lady.

So what is left for Donald Trump to achieve in his remaining life? My best guess is he is dismayed by the decay going on of the country which gave him so much and which he loves. If he can turn things around, he will leave behind a legacy which he desires. That is why he is running for president. It is the only method by which he has a chance to change the direction of country.

Koch bros are pro-amnesty psychopaths ideologically aligned with Marco Rubio and La Raza. They should be brought up on charges.

AFP has been around how long? I am not familiar with them at all. But the first thing that came to mind when I read your reply; and I hasten to say I have NO beef with YOU. But since AFP says they are going to “focus like a laser” while turning uo their noses at Trump; what have they been focusing on lately, while Boner, McConnell, et al have been screwing us over and pi$$ing away the majorities we’ve handed them.

I’ll take their “focusing like a laser” with 5 lbs of salt, and cast my lot with Trump. Just last night on FNC, Trump told Judge Jeannine that making America great again is more important than anything else, including his businesses. I’m going to take him at his word. And I do not expect him to walk on water. His position on Immigration rang my chimes; and the men he’s consulting with on his tax policy are top notch. So I’m going to hang with Donnie.

I agree. I respect him, and treat him like a rattlesnake. Much respect, but I'm wary of him. That said, the immigration con has to be stopped, and if it takes a snake, then that is fine with me.

AFP = Americans For Prosperity. They really took off after the Citizen United decision. They are talking small ball in this article, business stuff. They don't want to touch the immigration issues at all.

My thinking is the life of a President is the opposite of his life now. I cannot fathom Trump having all those constraints placed in his life.

I take The Donald at his word, that this is his new life’s mission, but does he really know what he’s in for?

Can you imagine all those unaccountable bureaucrats getting yelled at non-stop and cannot be fired. The Donald wants results, what will all those yo-yo’s do, commit mass suicide?

He’s going to need one hell of a team. For Trump to be successful he’s going to need to re-invent the government. Maybe he’ll have to take Executive Orders to a whole new level. That may not sit well.

There are some big concepts that need overturning. For example, Obama has placed political officers at all levels of the bureaucracy (not unlike the soviet union). They do nothing but monitor the regular employees behavior. They need weeding out before real change can occur, but are protected. Another is the Lobby Industry. When real change is attempted, Trump’s life expectancy will the that of a housefly. Sooner or later Trump must face this.

There are plenty of political appointees to hire and fire. And, BTW, you do know that his Apprentice show was for entertainment, and he’s got lots of people from senior executives to his driver who have been with him for decades. Right?

Was the term “concern troll” created for someone like you? Trump wouldn’t face any more hurdles in actually being effective in office than anyone else we could vote in.

okay, but my bigger point is still correct. He was not on the TP bandwagon from day one. Not by a long shot.

....”does he (Trump) really know what he’s in for?”....

No I don’t think so , but I do think he means business about winning the nomination and Presidency. I also think he’s beyond challenged as he goes along and he said as much from the get go when they first attacked him.

I think Trump knows what building a good team is about....politically he made a HUGE move when he brought Sessions into his policy making on immigration....that was a thunder bolt of lightening in Washington without a doubt.

I believe we’re seeing an early taking back of our government and the “Coup” in Washington which has taken over....That is what this election is about at it’s heart.... and the battle behind the scenes is far more brutal then what we see in the news.

His first speech at a teaparty event was April 16 2011. He spoke along with Alan West. A very rough speech showing his inexperience
He and Sarah Palin have been fiends since the McCain loss. I remember him getting pizza for the entire family when they visited NYC. There was a cute picture of him with little Piper. The Trumps also have a family member (nephew iirc) that has Downs Syndrome : which has bonded the two.

So how far back do you need to go to show his connection to TEA party?
With the lack of organization dues paying members are more suspicious than those of us who relate to TEA party issues

“Why would a man like Trump want to build up such a following only to screw them over and ruin public perception of him?

Thanks for that. So many here think he’s just going to jump ship. Why? To hack people off and look like an idiot?”

Amen. And why would he want to ruin his brand and businesses??? People would boycott anything that represents him. It doesn’t make sense for him to jump ship.

I’m not worried about the political appointee’s, it’s the permanent GSA hires of the political appointees that can never be trusted. That’s where the growth has come from in the last 7 years and they had a head start. My guess is fully half the GSA Fed Workforce must go.

“I’d rather us be a financial empire than an empire of war,” he said, “that way we can take over country after country, territory after territory, without firing a single shot.”

I don’t think that kid is clear on the concept.

The Tea Party is thought to have been born, and I agree, in February of 2009. The Kochs, Herman Cain, Scott Walker, etc etc etc were all there almost immediately. I think 2009 began with Trump still in love with Obama.

How far back does it need to go? Further and more consistently than he goes. This will be exposed at some time. Mark my words.

Just not replacing the retirees would greatly deplete the public employees. There was a very detailed article here just a week or two ago. Worth the search if you are interested
