When the home team suffers an unexpected and startling defeat on its own field, fans and commentators will most likely take notice. And thats just whats happening today as the GOP front-runner for the 2016 presidential nomination, Donald Trump, scores a big win in a state where a rival or two could certainly be considered favorite sons.
The website Florida Politics reports on what it calls the shock poll that finds Trump leading Jeb Bush by a significant margin in Florida, the state where George W.s younger brother served as a very popular governor from 1999-2007.
According to the just-released St. Pete Polls survey of more than 1900 likely GOP primary voters in the Sunshine State:
For the first time this year, Donald Trump tops a state poll of GOP presidential candidates in Florida.
A St. Pete Polls survey released on Wednesday shows the New York businessman with 26 percent support, with Jeb Bush in second place with 20 percent.
And what about Marco Rubios standing in the newly released survey of GOP voters? The senator from Florida is also found to be trailing Trump. Rubio places fourth in the new poll with 10 percent of the respondents backing him. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker came in third with 12 percent.
What many observers and analysts of presidential politics might find equally if not more surprising are the results of a different voter poll one conducted by the left-leaning Public Policy Polling (PPP). In this national survey, Donald Trump has a higher favorability rating than any of his GOP competitors among Latinos who were questioned July 20-21 about their candidate preferences.
According to MRC-TV coverage of this survey of 1,087 registered voters of Hispanic heritage, Trump scored a favorability rating of 34 percent. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, who one might think would hold an advantage with Latinos because of their backgrounds, were close behind with 30 percent and 29 percent, respectively. Jeb Bush, whose wife hails from Mexico and who frequently delivers campaign messages in fluent Spanish, won 31 percent of the Latino vote in this PPP poll.
You may recall that, as Western Journalism reported, Donald Trump has confidently said he would win the Latino vote should he become the nominee of the party. Trump has made that prediction several times, despite the fact that he continues to generate heated controversy over his campaign-launching remarks about dangerous, criminal aliens illegally entering the United States.
Trump surprises never end! Very exciting election year coming up!
In before Nick.
He’s busy $#*++**g his pants, I imagine...
Wow.
I thought Bush owned Florida. This is Big News.
Sudden, out of nowhere and inflicting great damage.
Trump is a big subject here in Florida. He is gaining big time support among non mexican Hispanics...like my family. Im not 100% sold on Trump and question his political leanings. But the GOPe is held in such contempt Im sure Trump will waste Bush and Rubio here. Cruz is toast too. The others are just hanging on for the final fall.
Parts of Florida are half under water simply as a geographical matter. That does not mean they want a wishy-washy half under water candidate. Bush and Rubio are too watered down on some key issues. Floridians are probably just happy to see someone who says what he means and sticks by it.
He needs to keep beating the IA INJUSTICE PROGRAM WITHOUT MERCY.
It is going to be incredibly boring to hear Rove and Co. chant “Reagan was down 23 points at this point in the 1980 race” for his boy Jebby. My prediction is that he ultimately drops out when he can’t bust 25% approval. Of course we’ll have to hear him blather his mouth off between now and then, talkin’ bout love and decorum and such. Allow me to yawn in his direction, in advance.
If I had $50K to flat out burn, I’d put a 1/4 page ad in the NY Times with the only text: “Jeb Bush will produce the worst Republican defeat in 2 generations.” Except then, they’d get my money and that would be intolerable.
These folks know what they left behind when they came here.
Calm down Jebulon, your collapse in public standing is "an act of love" - -
Bush has become too emotional. You expect that from the left but not from the right. Conservatives are suppose to be principled and strong, full of logic and reason, purpose and direction. Too many have lost their way. They went from “gentler and kinder” to “compassionate” to squishy.
And I thought Walker owned Iowa! This is shocking!
Unreal.
Trump represents simplistic competency.
Almost everyone knows he’s a tough negotiator.
A simple to understand skill.
Low information and minority voters respect this. Hence Trump is thrown over the top.
Other political rhetoric is hard to follow, understand nuance, involves making the the opponent look bad more important than candidate looking good.
Trump transcends that.
George H. Bush on his very worst day was never as boring as this Bush. Unbelievable. He reminds me of DeBlasio in his boring, can’t-be-bothered attitude.
