Senator Ted Cruz has drawn both praise and scorn for comments made last Friday on the Senate floor. According to the Texas Tribune, Cruz upset some by calling Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a liar.
I have listened to the comments of my colleague, the junior senator from Texas, both last week and this week, and I would have to say that he is mistaken, Cornyn said.
At issue: Cruz on Friday accused Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a Cornyn ally of telling a flat-out lie to Senate Republicans over movement of legislation related to an obscure, controversial federal agency called the Export-Import Bank.
For Senate standards, it was a savaging comment.
Cruz defended his comments on Sunday.
No member of this body should engage in ad hominem attacks directed at any member of this body, be they a Republican or be they a Democrat, Cruz said.
At the same time, I would note that it is entirely consistent with decorum, and with the nature of this body traditionally as the worlds greatest deliberative body, to speak the truth, he added. Speaking the truth about actions is entirely consistent with civility.
Cornyn took the floor immediately after Cruz. He backed McConnells procedural maneuvers that stifled a Cruz amendment on Iran. And Cornyn questioned the legitimacy of Cruzs charges against McConnell.
If the majority leader had somehow misrepresented to 54 senators what the facts are with regards to the Ex-Im Bank, I would suspect that you would find other voices joining that of the junior senator, but I hear no one else making such a similar accusation.
There was no misrepresentation made by the majority leader on the Ex-Im Bank, Cornyn added.
On Mondays edition of The Chad Hasty Show, Republican political strategist Matt Mackowiak said he thought that Cruz may have hurt his future in the Senate.
Cruzs impact as a U.S. Senator is going to be minimal going forward. You know, hes going to be persona non grata within the Senate Republican leadership. And if youre a conservative you may think thats great, but if youre a Texan, you know, you might be wondering what is Cruz going to be doing the rest of his Senate term.
Do you approve of Cruz calling McConnell a liar on the Senate floor? Let us know in todays KFYO Poll of the Day.
Do You Approve of Ted Cruz Calling Mitch McConnell a Liar on the Senate Floor?
Yes
No, he should have done it elsewhere
No, he never should have called McConnell a liar
Not sure
Vote
I would have preferred that he wouldn’t have been so polite!
McConnell is like McCain...they both need to retire.
First time I’ve seen a poll where “Not Sure” is at 0%.
I approve calling him that anywhere.
Tar and feathers is just too good for McConnell,
the stinking liar from Kentucky,
who lies and protects IRS abuse
and continues the coverup of Benghazi,
as he, his Staff and family remain EXEMPT from ObamaCARE.
McConnell deserves a Nobel Prize for LYING.
I don’t think anyone outside of Capitol Hill really gives a phuck about “senate decorum”. Those people insult the voters all the time.
Thank you for voting!
Yes 84%
No, he should have done it elsewhere 4%
No, he never should have called McConnell a liar 12%
Not sure 0%
I would have preferred he call McConnell out in a duel on the Senate floor.
always approve of speaking the truth...
Hell to the Yes.
I approve of calling liars liars.
It’s not the good ole boys of the GOPe that put Cruz in the senate. It’s the people of Texas. I am sure they approve of calling it like it is.
You want my comment? Are you man enough for my comment?
No, I didn’t think so, so, my comment is this:
“WTG CRUZ” call them ‘spineless sissies’ out every chance you get.....
Voted. 85% say “yes” for now.
You can tell how a blogger feels about Cruz based on the photograph. If it’s the side view with the needle nose, it’s likely anti-Cruz.
I approve and it was long overdue.
The Truth is what it is.
First, he didn’t call him a lier. He showed how McTurtle was not honest with his colleagues. A small point, but important.
But--Cruz minced words, and he should not have!
He should have referred to McDonnell by his name--and not as "the Speaker" or whatever.
And he should have used the verb "lie" and the noun "liar".
Do that next time, Ted!
