Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson Sunday touted a flat tax plan that he says even the nations poor would pay if hes elected.
Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Carson said its "very condescending" to think that poor people cant pay taxes at the same flat rate as wealthier Americans. Carson said he got the idea for his plan he calls it a proportional tax from tithing in the Bible.
Using a 10 percent rate as an example, Carson said "You make $10 billion a year, you pay $1 billion. You make $10 a year, you pay one dollar."
"Now, some people say its not fair because, you know, the poor people cant afford to pay that dollar," Carson, a retired neurosurgeon told Fox News Chris Wallace. "Thats very condescending. You know, I grew up very poor. I experienced every economic level. And I can tell you poor people have pride, too. And they dont want to be just taken care of."
Carson disagreed with calculations that Wallace quoted from the Tax Policy Center that indicated a flat tax would have to be in the 20 percent range in order for the federal government to raise as much revenue as it does now...

Hey now. I ain’t hominemphobic. (”your” in general or me in particular? :>}) Do we in fact know how excellent a brain surgeon he is? I appears he’s brilliant in his field. I know he rose above his background which is a brilliant thing to do and I wish more young people had the drive and determination that he had/has. Hell, I wish I did back in the day. Just not presidential material at this time.
Unfortunately the slogan will be "Ben Carson wants to raise your taxes" and for over half the population that would be true. How do you think that motto will go over?
Everybody needs to be a part time slave to the gov’ts.
If the Democrat ran on a campaign that he/she was going to raise your monthly tax bill by $400 or $500 a month then would you vote for them?
Two thirds of taxes should be raised with a 7.5% flat tax and the other one third with a 5% national sales tax. The only deduction would be for charitable donations. The feds would then not be allowed to borrow unless we have a war. Which means they would have to live on a fixed income like I do.
Yeah, it’s like Romney’s 47% comment. There is no upside to making potential voters feel threatened. Reagan motivated with uplifting speeches.
Everyone should pay taxes.
It takes a village paying taxes to get rid of takers.
I like the Fair Tax, consumption tax, sales tax, whatever . It does seem like the most fair way to tax and would not require an IRS. I wish Cruz were promoting that as I think it would be a great solution. Then you could forget filing altogether, not even on a postcard.
That doesn't make it a bad idea.
Yeah it does. You can't accomplish anything when you lose.
The federal government needs to be reduced until it can self-finance. Like what the Constitution originally envisaged.

You’re even more hard-core than I am. I like that.
Not really hardcore. Really. ;)

You’re a rare man, Johnny. :)
Seriously, how many people today would even contemplate the concept of no federal taxes? I’m guessing very few. A hundred? A handful?
I totally agree with him on this one. Flat tax is the only fair way to go-—no deductions, period. And gubment remains the tax collector, which is important. I do NOT want business collecting taxes “for” the gubment. That makes business the villain. I want people to know when they are paying a tax that it is the gubment it is going to, and therefore if it is raised (as people will assuredly try to do), everyone will know who to resist.
This is the perfect plan.
The left is always screeching about people paying their “fair share”. Nothing is more fair than one flat tax percentage for all. If you don’t make much, you don’t pay much. If you make lots, you pay lots.
Everyone should have to pay something. This is fair.
People who don't pay any taxes aren't going to vote Republican anyway. If he lies to get elected, then he's no better than Obama or other Dems.
About half the people don't pay income taxes because of deductions and tax credits. You're saying none of them vote Republican? Because I doubt they will if the Republicans run on a platform promising to raise their taxes. Would you?
I've benefited from various deductions in the past too, but I still can see the effect on our society of a tax system which punishes the workers and encourages the parasites. I like the idea of somehow making the tax system better and I like that someone has enough backbone to raise the topic.
