Ted Cruz is personally against the legalization of marijuana but the Republican presidential candidate said this weekend that he believes states have the right to put decriminalization laws on the books if they want - even though they directly conflict with federal law.
Cruz implied during a conversation with Daily Mail Online on Saturday that if he ascended to the highest elected office he wouldn't make his attorney general enforce federal laws pertaining to marijuana in states that have approved sales and consumption of the drug.
The position stands in contrast to the views of at least three of his GOP competitors, who last week said that while they believe in states' rights to self-determination, they'd lay the hammer down on Colorado and Washington for flouting federal law.
Asked Saturday during a New Hampshire campaign stop if he would direct his attorney general to enforce federal pot laws, Cruz said ‘yes’ before providing a lengthy answer that indicated he would not.
He first said that ‘if the attorney general and the president disagree with federal drug law they should come to Congress’ because Republicans and Democrats can come together on the issue of drug reforms....

Not well. But it will not go well either by legalizing it immediately across the board. The war is ultimately to agree on behaviors that are most conducive to a free and prosperous people. I know “compromise” is a bad word in some circles, but this is truly an area where compromise can be attained.

Why would he order a crackdown?
States Rights, right or wrong as long as they don’t violate the United States Constitution.
If someone happens to live in a Pothead State and they decide it isn’t their cup of Tea, either they work to repeal the Law or they move to another State.
Is it me, or is the Media frantically trying to trap Senator Cruz with all these silly gotcha questions and make believe scenarios?
Heck, most of the time they wont give his Campaign the time of day. The Media is as transparent as Mud.
He’s doing it because he believes in the constitution and states rights. It’s a pretty easy position to understand. Don’t confuse it with pandering for votes.
Alcohol Prohibition sure wasn’t ‘’conducive to a free and prosperous people’’ was it? So how is marijuana prohibition’’conducive to a free and prosperous people’’?
The proper use of either substance can be conducive to a free and prosperous people. I think we are a little too strict with both. At the same time, it would be a much more dangerous world if both were completely without restriction.

Ted Cruz is 10th Amendment strong again. States Rights trump the Federal Government here again.
Besides Ted has far more important work to do within the Federal Government confines. Like abolishing or downsizing the EPA, IRS, DOE, FDA, etc etc etc.....

I think we’re pretty much on the same page with this. There is always a tension between individual and corporate, privilege and responsibility. Much as I’d like to throw anyone and everyone out of the way who would prohibit my behaviors, in the long run it is better for me to compromise in applying some discipline to myself for the sake of, and in agreement with, others. In a perfect world we would all agree on how this discipline is to be spelled out and applied. How’s that perfect world workin’ out for ya?
Ted, being a strict Constitutionalist, is leaving it up to the states. I see no problem.
nope, no way. A State or an individual has the right to discriminate against a pot smoker. Let us not turn the tables around like with the federalization of gay rights
Good point! It isn't like anyone is forcing you to tolerate pot smokers in your city or your state. You ARE being forced to tolerate homosexuals no matter what state you're in. You're being forced to submit to all kinds of regulation that way.
Government is a force. It's supposed to be a servant. Overuse makes it a master. State's rights reduces government to the servant it is supposed to be. It is the CONSERVATIVE approach to government.
There's no more call to prohibit pot than to prohibit its prohibition! Let states decide that. The Federal government has zero place.

What you really mean, is, How about the Federal government making it illegal for any state to outlaw pot, once and for all?
