When Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas declared his candidacy for the 2016 presidential election last Monday, he became the first to do so officially. Here is a look at what he will need to do if he hopes to win.
The coalition
To win the Republican nomination, Cruz will have to bring together the partys anti-establishment wing, which is made of separate but overlapping voter blocs, including Christian conservatives, libertarians and Tea Party voters angry with the leadership of both parties.
His ultimate goal is to get into a one-on-one campaign against whoever emerges as the favorite of establishment Republicans. To do this, he must find a way to stand out in a crowded lane of conservative hopefuls.
In a general election, Cruz would not attempt to win over centrist voters as much as he would try to galvanize conservatives who did not vote in recent elections because they were dissatisfied with the choices.
The map
Cruzs primary prospects depend on a strong performance in Iowa or South Carolina, both of which include substantial numbers of Christian conservatives. If he is unable to win one of those early states, or at least be one of the top conservatives in the states that begin the nominating process, he will have a difficult time surviving into next March, when there is likely to be a rapid succession of contests.
Against a Democrat, Cruz would look to perform better than Mitt Romney in some of the Midwestern states among so-called Reagan Democrats, the heavily Catholic bloc of blue-collar voters who left their ancestral party to back Ronald Reagan, and evangelical voters.....

You’re not kidding. The media will be ten times worse with Ted Cruz than they were with Mama Grizzly. You know it burns them up that he is a real threat to denying the first woman to become president. Also, they wanted to be the ones to coronate the first Hispanic president, and this damn conservative Ted Cruz has the potential of f***ing it all up. They have to destroy him because of his political ideology and this “uppity” Hispanic needs to know his place, and not stray off the lefty plantation.
LOL!!
Actually, Walker is 3 years older than Cruz.
What?????? That is impossible. Ted Cruz looks 65. Not to be rude but he does.
That is because Cruz is 65 not 44. There is no way he is 44 years old.
I was commenting on the picture of Cruz. He does look 65 at least. Have you seen it? I don’t believe he is 44 at all. There is just no way.
Cruz only has to do one thing: defeat the media.
CRUZ IS 44 YEARS OLD!
Ted Cruz was born Dec. 22, 1970. His birth certicate has been posted online. Scott Walker was born Nov.2, 1967.
I have seen lots of pictures of Cruz. He looks at least 10 years younger than Walker and has all his hair.
Get a vision check.
from what I have read, Walker seems to waffle and back away from controversial issues. Cruz, on the other hand, has a very clear, cohesive, conservative voice on issues.
Since most people wisely distrust the media, I think he can accomplish that. These pundits are trying to discredit Cruz by talking about how he is at odds with Washington. I don’t think they realize that is a ringing endorsement.
True.
I think that the author makes some valid points. At the same time, I think that there may be far more centrist voters than he realizes, who will, after the failure of this administration, find Cruz to be a welcome change.
Cruz is a mensch AND he has all his hair. :)
“Cruz is a mensch AND he has all his hair.:)”
:):):)
“Did they give him advice on how to win his Senate seat as well?”
LOL, good point. Love the sarcasm ;)
“Which has you asking yourself, does Scott Walker engender the same response? If not, why not?”
I gather this is a rhetorical question. But I’ll answer anyway....Walker must be a GOP-chosen candidate then. Which means business as usual if he’s elected, and conservatives stabbed in the back. Again.
