When you take a stand on principle in the unprincipled world of Washington, D.C., youre sure to upset a lot of people, as U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz found out Saturday when he forced a vote on the constitutionality of President Obamas overreaching executive order on immigration.
In a move that pitted Cruz in a head-to-head matchup with outgoing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, the Texas senator prevailed in getting a point-of-order vote on whether Obamas action was constitutional, before the Senate passed a massive $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill.
Cruz would lose that vote overwhelmingly 22 to 74 with a majority of his fellow Republicans voting against it. But he made a point conservatives are going to remember.
Before securing the vote, Cruz wrote on his Facebook page:
Harry Reids last act as majority leader is to, once again, act as an enabler for President Obama, by blocking this vote on the presidents amnesty. He is going to an embarrassing length to tie up the floor to obstruct debate and a vote on this issue because he knows amnesty is unpopular with the American people, and he doesnt want the Democrats on the record as supporting it.
And even though he succeeded in forcing the vote, Cruz made it clear he was not looking to shut down the government.
We are only seeking a vote, he wrote. As soon as the majority leader allows a vote on a measure to stop President Obamas amnesty, we can and should move forward on this bill to fund the government.
The Senate was forced to work late into the night because of Cruzs procedural move, and drew criticism from some Republicans....

Wasn’t the vote for the bill 56-40...so if you deduct the 8 from 56, you have 44....and if you add that 8 to 40, you have 48, and that would mean if they had stuck to their original vote....then it would not have passed, right?
Is my math correct and it was the actually bill vote? Cruz must have thought they would keep their vote in line with him, and the Cramnibus would have failed. Interesting.
It’s good to show that the Republican left can’t be distinguished from the radical Democrats. The old excuse that voting for Republican leftists was better than voting for Democrats because it is a slower move to the left is no longer valid. Politically there is no degree of separation.
So if those nine had stuck with conservatism on the final cromnibus vote, cromnibus would've lost, 49 against, 47 for.
Which makes one wonder what happened in between the two votes, or was their intent to vote for the bill all along.
Harry Reid kept saying the final vote would be Monday at 9 am...so did he deceive enough that they left, because many weren’t there for the second vote??
When I say between two votes, I’m talking about 1. Did Obama violate Constitution vote, and 2. The 1.1 Trillion Cromnibus vote.
I too am incredibly cynical of late, if Cruz wanted attention he sure wouldn't be getting it like this, he has proven to be one with integrity, honor and discipline in the face of extreme adversity, he does not waffle he does not apologize what he says is what he means he has never had to explain what he says; he is always forthright and clear. No when it comes to Cruz I have no cynicism, he will probably do some things along the way I don't agree with, but he will remain true to the constitution that is his hallmark.
The assaults on Cruz have not yet begun, I am confident he will stand, but I am not so confident of my fellow conservatives, we are very quick to shoot our wounded, he will get wounded by hook or crook; the target is huge and the arrows of lies and deceit are aplenty.
My list-post #27 is incorrect as MUDOG respectfully pointed out-Please Disregard
I read that, either way the bill would have lost...too bad there were people who didn’t vote...Why, I wonder?
Some group should take out ads in each district of the ‘about face’ Senators, and note that they are paying for the illegals because of those politicians.
All I can figure is, some of the votes for Cruz's motion were just for show to establish conservative credentials.
Republicans Not Voting
Chambliss, Ga.; Coburn, Okla.; Inhofe, Okla.
Dem not voting
Fineswine
This ‘present’ crap or leaving before something being voted on is over...is a dereliction of duty, imho.
“Let us be patient and see if Cruz keeps this up once he is the majority.”
The last Texas Senator who was worth a damn was Phill Gramm - Mr. Cruz is even better
All the senators not on this list are MUD. You are DIRT, Ron Johnson!
Kelly Ayotte is to the LEFT of both McCain and Bernie Sanders!
Its unbelievable. There was absolutely no cost for them to vote for this. It wouldn’t have stopped the vote on the 1.1 trillion. Its pretty bad when someone can’t even vote on principle when it has no teeth. It just goes to show these guys aren’t going to do anything over the next two years but try to run the clock out.
Is Yertle hiding in his shell? A pathetic Liberal DemocRat.
This man has been steady and steadfast to conservative principle since a schoolboy.
He has not been given any easy path throughout. Why should we think he will alter his path now?
