Columnist Pat Buchanan predicted that either Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) or Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) would be in the "finals" for the GOP nomination in 2016 on Friday's "McLaughlin Group."
"If you want to get the nomination, you don't worry about independents in a general election, you excite the base, the Tea Party, the conservatives, the activists, the libertarians, and this is exactly what Cruz is doing. And I think it's a correct strategy as a nomination strategy, it's risky in a general election" he stated....

Perhaps most surprisingly, Pauls resolution will allow for limited use of boots on the ground as necessary for the protection or rescue of members of the United States Armed Forces or United States citizens from imminent danger [posed by ISIS] for limited operations against high value targets, and as necessary for advisory and intelligence gathering operations.
Bit of an understatement.
Appointed to the office of Solicitor General of Texas by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, Cruz served in that position from 2003 to 2008.
The office had been established in 1999 under to handle appeals involving the state, but Abbott hired Cruz with the idea that Cruz would take a "leadership role in the United States in articulating a vision of strict construction."
As Solicitor General, Cruz would argue before the Supreme Court nine times, winning five cases and losing four.
Cruz has authored 70 United States Supreme Court briefs and presented 43 oral arguments, including nine before the United States Supreme Court. Cruz's record of having argued before the Supreme Court nine times is more than any practicing lawyer in Texas or any current member of Congress.
Cruz has commented on his nine cases in front of the U.S. Supreme Court: "We ended up year after year arguing some of the biggest cases in the country. There was a degree of serendipity in that, but there was also a concerted effort to seek out and lead conservative fights."
Cruz has been named by American Lawyer magazine as one of the 50 Best Litigators under 45 in America, by The National Law Journal as one of the 50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America, and by Texas Lawyer as one of the 25 Greatest Texas Lawyers of the Past Quarter Century

Have to admit I've occasionally had thoughts along those same lines.
As an example, I read an article that said he likes to ski with his family. The first thought I had was-"I hope he doesn't go off skiing by himself".
(This came from some accounts and posts here on Fr about the late Sonny Bono's death. He was another GOP rising star. He hit a tree while skiing by himself, and there were some unusual aspects in the story-things that didn't make sense. Some speculated that it wasn't an accident that killed him. I'll leave it at that.)
Anyway we know for sure that there are powerful people in both parties that ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT HIM TO RUN. This is the same crowd who viciously went after Sarah Palin and her entire family, including her children, and in fact are still attacking them, to this very day. This is what Ted Cruz has to look forward to .
(Then again, he is friends with Sarah and family , so I'm sure they've had many conversations about the feces storm that is headed his way if he decides to run.)
I think that he (Cruz) is by far the best candidate to get this country turned around, if it is to be saved. But, I also think it is going to to take divine intervention, and protection from the Lord above, to get him there.
I would ask everyone who likes him, to keep he and his family in your prayers. They are going to need them.
And, recent history informs us that you
cannot win a war with ONLY locals from
that part of the world on the ground. (x5)
That is a recipe for losing.
You declare war then you had
better go b’s to the wall.
The limitations you outline
are the things the Rats are
famous for.
Yeah, why would we want a president who went to two of the best universities in the world and rose above his peers at both? Or a first lady who successfully scaled the heights of one of the most cutthroat, competitive companies on earth? I can prove, with hundreds of witnesses, Ted Cruz’s achievement at both Princeton and Harvard Law School. Can you do the same for Barack Obama?
I agree with you 100%, Pajamajan.
War against ISIS/Jihadists can never be won until all the 10% fanatics of 1.5 Billion Muslims are killed. That is 150 Million fanatics spread all over the world including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Somalia, Nigeria, Indonesia, Malaysia and Myanmar. Bombing ISIS into a sand pile will only increase recruits to terrorism.
To not understand Jihadism is burying your head in the sand.
I doubt it
Gonna be Seven Dwarfs all over again
GOPe money and their network FOX along with GOPe control of most state primaries will again push for the vanilla soft on culture guy
And lose again just like past two times
The GOPe is like any collaborative political power in the face of an invasion
Say anything...stay relevant....keep some power
The primaries will only determine the next Pétain if GOP powers that be yet again make the choice
Plus Kasich has plenty of your monikers in his closet
We do have allies and we can use them for some of the fighting. The Peshmerga, for example, is a pretty tough fighting force. If we could get them heavy weapons, they could do a LOT of damage to ISIS.
My point is that we have never declared war only to fight a
limited engagement war. That’s what Rand wants to do and it
is indefensible. What happens if the Peshmerga fail? If we
DECLARE war we need to get our hands dirty from the start, period.
“No more generic and almost meaningless Senator vs. Governor debates about who is more qualified.”
One hundred percent correct.

Okay.. One of them but who is the other that they will be in the finals against?
Does Pat make a prediction on the ‘other’?
This “day” you mention has been here from the beginning.
Every good leader is always targeted by the cowards and the weaklings lurking in the shadows.
It doesn’t stop the really good ones.
The Good Lord can and will destroy the unrighteous.
I don’t think Cruz has anything to worry about.
If the GOP had any sense, they would be pushing him like Klondike bars in August.
I want a break from the Ivy League. It is the source of many of the problems that beset our government. I’m not asking for a total ban, just a hiatus of 8 yrs or so.
Bush/Clinton/Bush/Obama: 28 straight years of Ivy Leaguers is enough!
Yes, and he is even better than those couple paragraphs indicate.
I subscribe to the New Yorker magazine (for the same reason I watch Morning Joe—to keep track of the enemy) which not long ago carried a smarmy piece on Cruz by the Obama/media buttboy lawyer Jeffrey Toobin.
Toobin is such a loser that he gives tubesteaks a bad name...but he struggled through this long article to be hard on Cruz, essentially throwing in the towel and telling the left that they had better not underestimate him.
The aspect of the article that struck me most was how well-regarded Cruz is as a lawyer, by friend and foe, even on the Supreme Court. The piece indicated that Cruz has been invited by the Court to take part in certain cases that he wasn’t even a party to, just because they knew his arguments would be of value to their consideration.
And this high esteem was granted to him even by the leftists amongst the Supremes.
Now a great lawyer doesn’t make a great President, and to me Cruz lacks a little in the personal appeal area...but he is conservative and brilliant and he loves his country.
