Texas Grows Spending Almost 100% during Perry's Tenure

Posted on 08/14/2011 2:07:40 PM PDT by BereanBrain

During Perry's Tenure in Texas, Spending in Texas grew from about 49 Billion a year, to over 90 Billion a year. Texas budgets every 2 years, to the following show the budgets for both Bi-annums. Divide by two for average yearly spending.

Texas 2010-2011 Budget 182 Billion

http://sunshinereview.org/index.php/Texas_state_budget

Texas 2000-2001 Budget was ~98 Billion and is available at

http://www.lbb.state.tx.us/Bill_76/Bill-76-4_Conference_Summary_0599.pdf

In other words CLOSE to 100% Growth in spending. (from 49 B to 91 B)

During this time, the Census says Texas grew from 20 Million (2000 Census) to 25 Million (2010 Census). That’s a growth of 25 Percent.

So much for Perry's Fiscal Conservative Credentials.

You sound like a democrat.

You sound like a troll or a PaulTard. If you want to post a half-truth article about Perry you should expect rebuttals pointing out the context of what/how/why your half-truth, slanted post is saying.

I am willing to bet your post history includes criticism of the Lame Stream Media for being biased and if you want me to go check, i will, but you're doing the same thing. Why not post your angle tied in to revenue increases, mandated spending, infrastructure improvements, population influx, etc and then compare it to other states to give everyone a better understanding of how Perry's tenure compares with other states Governors?

Based on your above statement, I wonder how long before Godwin's Law kicks in?

And no, I am not a Perry fan but we're not going to turn around 100 years of commie infiltration in one Presidential election.

Let concentrate on putting more TP members in both chambers to keep what ever RINO gets elected.

That is our reality.
I do like Perry. I will vote for him, unless someone better emerges: Palin, Bachmann, Cain, or ???. There's a long ways to go yet.

I agree that it's very important for the Tea Party to focus on expanding its influence in both chambers of Congress. It's the best way to control the president, regardless of who wins the election.

40 Billion this year..

Might want to check that debt clock link in a few hours. Revenues are increasing, spending is running backwards. Debt is running backwards, too, while GDP is increasing. What am I missing there?

Amen!

We didn't get to where we are now over night and we're not going to get back that way either.

We have a lot of undoing to accomplish, well, if we're going to do it at the ballot box anyway.

There is a reason Perry runs near the bottom of EVERY Texas poll of Potential Presidential candidates.

I'm pretty sure some of these polls show Obama winning Texas. You go ahead and believe that.

"Yes, yes indeed....obama's a much better alternative."

Is he running in the Republican primary, too ? With all those primadonnas who oppose Conservative policy, he might as well.

"And no, I am not a Perry fan but we're not going to turn around 100 years of commie infiltration in one Presidential election."

Well, one thing is for sure, you won't turn it around with a RINO.

"Let concentrate on putting more TP members in both chambers to keep what ever RINO gets elected."

Let's elect Conservatives, period. A RINO in the WH won't accomplish squat except to destroy the GOP and advance the left's cause.

40 Billion this year

You know, you are the epitome of the saying, "Figures don't lie, but liars figure."

In 2000, the year before Perry took office, the state of Texas had the 8th lowest debt burden as a percentage of GDP in the country, at 2.62%. The average debt for all states was 5.51%. That same year, Texas had the 4th lowest state spending as a percentage of GDP at 6.03%. The average spending for all states was 7.61%.

In 2010, the latest year for which figures are available, the state of Texas had the 2nd lowest debt burden, at 2.39%. During that time the national debt average for all states went up to 7.12%. On the spending side, Texas was once again the 4th lowest in the nation with state spending as a percentage of GDP at 7.03%. The national average for state spending was 9.07%.

So while the national average for state debt to gdp ratio went up 1.6% from 2000-2010, Texas went from 8th lowest to 2nd lowest during that time, and actually reduced state debt to gdp ratio by almost .25%. And during that same period, the state spending to GDP ratio only wnet up about 1.5%, while the national average went up by about 2%. Texas alsohas kept its spending to GDP ratio about 2% less than the national average.

Your problem is that you are using the figures for spending and debt for all state and local government in Texas - and Perry cannot control how much the counties and cities borrow and spend, he can only control state borrowing and spending. And it looks like he has done a pretty good job of it.

See US Spending

Actually no,

Most of the garbage on the web talks of “tax dollars per capita” or “taxes paid vs. money received” from the federal government, or as you do, lump multiple states together into regions so you get some bogus contrived outcome. All of these are games various people play is to show whatever they want to show.

Truth is, Texas gets only second to California in what they get in total outlays from the federal government. For example (department of education): http://www2.ed.gov/about/overview/budget/statetables/index.html

Texas has a lot of people; a lot of old people (Medicare), retirees (Social Security), sick people, kids (WIC), College Students (Federal student aid), highways, airports, seaports, border miles, poor people (Food stamps, Medicaid), unemployed (that are collecting for up to 99 weeks)... One can lie with statistics all day, but Texas is after California number 2 in federal outlays if for no other reason because of her 25,500,000+ “legal” population. Even though she gets “less” per person/resident than many other states and she pays in more than she gets back, the overall amount is larger than even what states like New York get and the statistic you try to use against Perry has to do largely with federal outlays in exactly these type of programs. Even as part of the stimulus act, Texas was #2 of all states and this is regardless of who is the governor: http://www.recovery.gov/Pages/default.aspx

Perry is taking some unfair hits on FR, but this is a legitimate complaint against both Perry and our “conservative” legislature. The R party in Texas needs to be shaken up.

And who is the VIABLE conservative candidate?

Hear, hear, too bad we don't have one. The Chambers in Congress are the answer, they'll keep the RINO POTUS in line.

IMHO, that is the choice we have, this time around.

Self-supporting debt vs. non-supporting debt

Showing debt is only 1.2% of GDP as of 2008, with TAX supported debt at 12.6B This hole was closed during the following legislative session, due to a collapse in the housing market, Katrina overruns, and other unforeseen expenses.

FWST article showing how the Texas State Government has a tiny share of the total debt while the majority is the LOCAL Government. Of the $30 Billion you classify as "DEBT" from 2009, only $3B is NOT self-satisfying.

Two words: Slick Willard.

"And who is the VIABLE conservative candidate?"

We're awaiting her entry.

"Hear, hear, too bad we don't have one. The Chambers in Congress are the answer, they'll keep the RINO POTUS in line."

Conservatives don't keep RINO Governors or Presidents in line. RINOs screw over Conservatives and ruin everything they touch (and then their Democrat friends get all the winnings). If we're going to have a liberal in the WH, let it be a Democrat. Let them own their failed policies, keep the garbage away from us.

My wife's a teacher in Plano and as you might know, Texas in order to make sure they don't explode their debt decided to massively cut state spending to include education. She survived the cuts, many didn't. We know first hand that when it comes to spending, he's not into simply kicking down the can and willing to assume massive debt and have the sun shine on him for the few years he's in office. The point is this, ***where he has influence,*** he has shown to be fiscally conservative. What people are doing in this forum, is essentially take what a federal government is doing and the programs they mandate and states administer and blame Perry for that. That's BS.

You can't have it both ways. While Perry is being ripped into for cutting the budget (Just google “Perry budget,” or “Perry budget cuts”)and trying to maintain a semblance of sanity in debt, others are arguing he's spending to much and like Obama (lol). So which is it? Is he the draconian jerk the San Antonio and other liberal Texas media outlets portray him as, or is he the big spender some conservatives now try to portray him as?
