Gingrich: Ryan budget plan ‘right-wing social engineering’ (Sunday talk shows)
The Washington Post's 44 ^ | May 15, 2011 | Emi Kolawole and Rachel Weiner

Discussion on the Sunday talk shows centered on the budget and the looming debt ceiling, with House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) on CNN’s State of the Union and House Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) on CBS’s Face the Nation. Domestic energy production and the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East also were addressed.

Meet the Press (NBC)

Gingrich: Paul Ryan' s plan is "right-wing social engineering," goes too far

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) explained that he felt compelled to run for president because "to not seek to help the country to fix the problems we have would have been a failure of citizenship on my part." Gingrich laughed off the possibility of being anyone's running-mate: "Can you imagine any presidential nominee who picked me to be the vice presidential candidate?" He denied charges of racism and said he thinks "Obama loves America" but has "a different idea of what America is." Gingrich said he has had some difficulty separating his role as a political analyst from his desire to be a "disciplined" political leader. "I think that's a fair criticism." Gingrich also addressed his past marital infidelity and two divorces, saying "I've clearly done things that are wrong. People have every right to ask the tough questions."

If America needs Newt it’s in far worse trouble than any of us believed.

Well, Newt, you’ve just engineered yourself out of the possibility of getting even close to the nomination. And, I used to have a lot of respect for you. But, 1994 and 1995 is a long time ago. You’re no longer in the running, so, say goodnight and save yourself the money and trouble of running for the republican nomination.

Newt, IMHO is a politician and as such is dream-eyed at having power. Anything that doesn’t help accrue money and power (i.e., cap & trade) to Washington will be fought any way possible.

Cap & Trade, just another political euphemism for a tax. Just get the money and we can call it anything we want, but not a tax. Politician believe that the citizens are gullible and will never think of it as a tax if we are lied to enough.

Newt is a smart man, I will give him that. He also writes good books, novels ... even though they are not smooth and easy reads. He may even be a good historian, however he maybe one historian who hasn’t learned from the past.

Newt should continue writing and enjoying that job for as long as he can. Only other RINO’s or liberals would take him seriously.

I should think we could all agree after this that Newt Gingrich is about as necessary a candidate as Romney, and close the book on them both.

Ryan has the right idea.

In order to save Medicare Advantage and Social Security, these entitlement programs need to be reformed.

By taking hard steps and difficult choices now, those programs could be salvaged.

If it were up to democrats, these programs would not be touched at all and then they would go bankrupt and then everybody on them would be affected, seniors included.

I have already eliminated my support for Gingrich, Romney, Trump, Pawlenty and Paul.

That does not leave very many left standing.

I am holding our for Cain and Bachmann.

The longer politicians spend in Washington with the Ivy Leaguers and power brokers, the more their brains turn to mush. That’s how the Newt of 1994 transformed into this jackass.

GINGRICH: well, i agree that all of us have a responsibility to help pay for health care. and i think there are ways to do it that make most libertarians relatively happy. i have said consistently we ought to have some requirement that you either have health insurance or you post a bond, or in some way, you indicate you’re going to be held accountable.

GREGORY: but that is the individual mandate, is it not?

GINGRICH: it’s a variation on it.

GREGORY: so you won’t use that issue against Mitt Romney?

GINGRICH: no
