"San Francisco values" used to be political code for life in what Republicans dismiss as a kinky liberal enclave.
But now a top statewide GOP candidate is redefining the epithet as life in a city handcuffed by its progressive mayor, Gavin Newsom, who is so "extreme" that locals can't get a Happy Meal or a plastic shopping bag without official permission.
Republican Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado, a moderate running against Democrat Newsom for re-election as lieutenant governor, isn't the first to use San Francisco to fire up his party's base. But at the three-day state GOP convention, Maldonado marshaled a new twist to the tactic, skewering the San Francisco mayor as "Naughty, Naughty Newsom," an official whose "nanny state" governing style includes banning bottled water at City Hall and trying to define the size of bagels sold in the city.
Here, Newsom is mocked as the chief of the Food Police and the Green Police.
"With a pen and piece of paper and an executive order, he bans Pepsi and Coke," Maldonado told The Chronicle. "You know what? If I don't like Pepsi and Coke, I just don't drink it. But if Gavin doesn't like it, he bans it for everybody."

The only reason to vote for Abel Maldonado is Gavin Newsom.
I’m surprised that Gavin hasn’t rotted out from an STD by now.
It's like peeing on the Koran to a Muslim.
“It’s like peeing on the Koran to a Muslim.”
Dang!! What a GREAT idea!
Urinal cakes that say Koran on them...with an image of that Pedophile, goat banger, Muhammad on it!
Proceeds to go to building a Gay Bar across from whatever mosque that you want to park it at.
Ooooorah!
Newsome is the only sane figure in SF politics so I'm looking forward to the Board of Stupervisors picking the next mayor. You think that city is loony now?
Gavin Newsom deserves to be mocked. Frequently and enthusiastically.
What a horrible thought!! The place really is hosed.
To be somewhat fair though, San Francisco has been handcuffed by it's last 5 or 6 mayors. Where's George Christopher when you really need him?
Theres a profound, pent-up desire in San Francisco to give a real progressive mayor a try. The progressives can prove that were fiscally prudent, that we can make the tough decisions and do an effective job of running the city.
I believe Maldonado is not a great conservative hero but y'know what, no one has ever expressed more succinctly the chasm that separates us from them.
So would you like Mr. Newson to make it on the RINO List? I can make it happen!
