In fact, even while saying his backing of Thompson "is not a personal repudiation of Rudy," D'Amato managed to make it clear Giuliani shouldn't set his sights too high. Perhaps he could be a vice president, the former senator suggested.
"He might make a great addition to the ticket" headed by Thompson, D'Amato told The Associated Press.

Actually, there is a case to be made for Fred Thompson going this route for a running mate. Giuliani would put a lot of New England and mid-Atlantic states into play that would normally be a lock for the DemocRATS.

It’s likely to be Thompson-Romney or Romney-Thompson. Ticket balancing.

This type of reasoning only makes sense if you assume voters don’t care about the country or the direction it goes. I can’t imagine a scenario in which someone would say “I hate the candidate running for President and everything he stands for, but I’m willing to throw everything I believe in aside and vote for him because it would be swell to say our home-boy is vice-president”.

Rudy shouldn’t be considered for president or vice president for two reasons: he’s too liberal, and he doesn’t have enough political experience. The running-mate should be a conservative who has been a U.S. rep.
The last four republican vice presidents were U.S. reps. They were Dick Cheney, Dan Quayle, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford. A good choice would be Jennifer Dunn. She was the chairman of the Washington State GOP, 1980-’92; and a conservative U.S. rep., 1993-2005. If she runs for VP, the Republican would probably win Washington’s 10 electoral votes.

Thompson-Romney would be good. It could well beat any Dem ticket. Plus it gives Romney 4-8 years to groom and learn. I also like Thompson-Hunter. Both IMHO would beat a Hillary-Obama ticket or any other Dem ticket. Thompson-Hunter or Thompson-Romney would put strong leadership at the top and guidance throughout the chain.
I think Hunter in the Senate as VP would be better than an old fashioned bull whip. I can even say that Hunter as SECHLS or SECDEF would be excellent too.
I don't know that I would deem Rudy SECSTATE material - might be another Albright. Possibly AG if he is still as tenacious as he was years ago. Romney would make a better SECSTATE than Rudy. Romney might even be good as SECTREAS or SECCOMMERCE.
I could even see Huckabee as SECHHS, SECLABOR, SECHUD or SECINTERIOR. SECVA maybe Gen Pace. Most of the other GOP Presidential candidates I have no use for. Tancredo is still needed in House, especislly if Hunter not there. I believe some Senators would be good in cabinet positions (Sessions, Cornyn, Inhofe, Coburn, Dole) but then take them from the Senate and it could be a body without a conscience. Others like McConnell, McCain, Kyl, Gramham and Lott might need to go home and set out a while - a long while.
This 'go along to get along' with the Dems attitude that seems to have infected the GOP Senators needs to be excised and quarantined. Our House Republican need to start speaking up more also, not just Tancredo.

D'Amato is hardly one I'd turn to when I want to pulse of the GOP. I just don't see Thompson-Giuliani happening.
If Thompson is the nominee, and I think this likely, his running mate will probably not be someone currently running for President. Romney's the most likely of the candidates currently running. Besides him, my short list for likely (not necessarily preferred) running mates would be Watts, Steele, Hutchinson, Pawlenty, or Sanford.
My preferred short list would be Tommy Franks, John Bolton, or David Petraeus. Fat chance of any of them, but who knows?
