[history]
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Public health interests prevailed over warnings that personal freedoms are being eroded as the Maine House gave its final approval to a bill to ban smoking in bars and taverns.
Representatives' 95-47 enactment vote sent the measure to the Senate and put Maine a step closer to joining California and Delaware in imposing statewide bans on smoking in bars. New York's ban starts in July, and Connecticut's newly enacted ban on smoking in bars takes effect next April.

So when are you going to run for Maine state rep?
With our wonderful clean elections law, it won't cost you a dime if you do the paperwork.

#342........ Can't you make Minion work a little harder, his wife would be sooooo impressed.
To: Great Dane
It certainly will, not because we can't go without a smoke, but we are tired of politicians mandating life styles, we have had a 100% smoking ban for about two years, 60 bars and resraurants have closed, only 13 new has opened, almost all bingo halls have closed. Thanks for bringing some sense into this discussion.

Can't smoke in the Supreme Court, the Congress ..... You're wrong - they are exempt from the those pesky little things they impose upon the regular folks. There are plenty of places around there to smoke...........

Wow...no kidding. Did it work for any of your friends? Those 3 are the only ones I know to have gone there.
To: supercat
The anti-smokers want to be able to go to 'fun' places without having to inhale smoke. Unfortunately, they fail to grasp that making places non-smoking often chases away the people that made the places 'fun' in the first place. I must correct you about your comment that making places non-smoking "often" chases folks away. Forcing places to go non-smoking GUARANTEES chasing the fun folks away.
The anti-smokers SWORE that business in bars and restaurants would increase in Delaware as soon as the smoking ban went into effect because all the non-smokers would be out and about.
It hasn't happened.

It was someone else who was equating a misdemeanor/minor infraction/public nuisance/pollution ticket with a Nazi gas chamber. As far as I know, no one has ever done any such thing.
The reference to Nazi when it involves anti-smokers refers to the anti-smoker position/attitude/stance of the 3rd reich. when one looks at things historically (which everyone should) it is very clear that the term "nazi" is not undeserved by the anti-smoker contingent of the late 20th and early 21st century.
But to put it into a more current time-frame - anti-smoker jihad would be appropriate.

That's what the people say who want to go visit a public tavern or restaurant and not be assaulted with someone else's second-hand smoke. Since when is a tavern or restaurant "public"???????
What is stopping you from openning your own smoke-free tavern????

You are the lowest possible type of person I can imagine.
until it can be proven without a doubt that exposure to SHs is completely harmless in all cases any parent how forces his child to breath SHS is not fit to be a parent.
Who do you think you are to tell me that my parents were unfit parents - and who do you think you are to tell me I am an unfit parent.
YOU have shown yourself to be the anti-smoker that you have attempted to deny you are.
Forget about trying to do your placating routine - you are a tobacco prohibitionist through and through.

We don't want to breathe smoke. All well and good - but that also means you don't barbeque or do any other fun stuff like that. What a shame your kids will never know the wonders of a toasted marshmallow.
Or is it that you just have been brain-washed to believe that it is only tobacco smoke that is a problem????
The answer to that question is most likely a resounding YES.

Since when is a tavern or restaurant "public"??????? Some people don't understand that, despite the name, a "public house" is private property.

Most people in favor of these bans have no clue of the differnce between public and private - and it scares me that so many of them are here.

"I think it's great that you eliminated one risk during pregnacy. But back in the dark ages. My mom smoked through six uneventful pregnacies years of birth 1948 son 8lb 6oz, 1950 daughter 7lb 8oz, 1954 (me)9lb 6oz, 1956 daughter 8lb 4oz, 1958 son 8lb 8oz, and 1961 son 9lb even."
Yep, my mom smoked through her pregnancy with me and I was just fine too. I did it due to my hubby's nagging about it. He rarely nags and so I gave in. He also nagged a bit towards the end of my pregnancy with my son for me to not get the epidural... about 3 hours into labor HE was telling the nurses they better get the damn anesthesiologist up there and get me one! LOL He used guilt with my daughter to make me stop during that pregnancy.. "Well, you stopped during it with [son's name] so it wouldn't be fair to not stop this time either." He had good intentions and very rarely bugs me to do things his way so when he does I usually bend a bit for him. Wasn't that hard for me anyway. And the cigs were making the morning sickness worse. I don't fuss at anyone else who chooses to smoke during pregnancy though.

"Do your own history research. Its a fact. "
Well, I'm not the one stating it's a fact and arguing your side of the debate. You are the one responsible for backing up your "facts."
To: VRWC_minion
"I don';t agree with the private property rights being taken without compensation but I do agree with this. The person who smokes in the same room as his kids is abusive and shouldn't parent."
And who are you to say who is and is not fit to be a parent? You obviously don't know what real abuse is. I hope you haven't reproduced. I'd hate to think that you are raising more of your kind. Although I have never smoked around either of my kids, statements like you just made irritate me to the point of having to bite my tongue(or fingers) to prevent myself from getting banned from the forum. You are nothing more than a donkey in elephants clothing. Guess that makes you a fatass.
To: Tapu
"Is that the original headline? I'm not into all these laws but it seems a bit over the top to call the state Nazi. Not sure that's the most reasoned way to promote your cause. "
There is a tie-in between Nazis and anti-smoking but I don't remember the details. Someone else here may be able to detail it.

Do you drink coffee in the morning? You know that makes you a drug addict too. Caffeine is really not much worse than nicotine. The withdrawal symptoms of caffeine hurt a whole lot worse though.
