California: Federal aid unlikely for state deficit. Bush not offering any, Congress reluctant.

WASHINGTON -- As California scrambles to adjust to a budget shortfall that could be nearly $35 billion over the next 18 months, Gov. Gray Davis is hoping for some relief from Washington. But President Bush has yet to propose a penny of help, and his economic stimulus plan could deepen the red ink by eliminating federal taxes on dividends, thus making it more costly to sell bonds to pay for schools, roads and hospitals.

That's what happened in Argentina. The central gov't. subsidized the province's deficits and went broke.

The Democrats are running their mouths about the federal budget being unbalanced and then stick their hands out to Washington for money. If they raise their state and local taxes any more they're going to lose more elections, so now their only source of more money is the feds, who can run a deficit that the state/locals can't. Screw them.

They think the budget morass was created by years of profligate Democratic spending for which the governor's response is to raise taxes.

Tell me about it.

We've got the same thing on a smaller scale with Spendenning in Maryland.

The nerve of these leftists is earth shattering.

Davis joined Rep. Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, the new House Democratic leader, in a telephone news conference in which they accused the Bush administration of ignoring the economic devastation that most states, especially California, are facing.

Might this article be referring to . . .

The only legitimate gripe in the whole article was related to the costs of dealing with illegal immigrants. The federal government is responsible for controlling the border. California is stupid in that they throw out the welcome mat to illegals with a vast array of freebies (covered by exorbitant taxes on the proletariat of the People's Republik of Kalifornia).

Voters in California must like this form of government. They put the socialists back in office in November. Perhaps another 2 years of economic failure will catch their attention.

Davis also has complained fiercely about the federal government's refusal to fully fund the state's cost of incarcerating illegal immigrants accused or convicted of crimes, a $400 million annual drain on the state's treasury.

Well, he better just go complain to the guy in the mirror. He's one of those pandering to illegals; what else did he expect?

The federal government has no business bailing out CA. Let CA's own government deal with the mess that they caused. If they were to get one single penny of bail out money from the Feds, they would just be encouraged to spend billions more.

California has lost even that argument. Most of the big cities have a policy of not handing over illegals to INS when the local cops discover them. If we in CA aren't willing to do even that much in enforcing the immigration laws, then we have no business complaining about being burdened by illegals.

Wherever it comes from, it is taxpayer money. What the governors want is for the Federal Government to take the hit for the taxes. Let the Governors take the hit for raising their own taxes.

"Bush is responsible for the financial crisis in the states" is one of the rat's latest mantras.

Also, Davis is responsible for letting prop 187 die. He has absolutely no leg to stand on regarding the cost of illegal aliens.

The old saying, " you made your bed - sleep in it."
I had to laugh that the voters in Cali. kept the
commies in office. Let them keep the problems they
created and compounded.

Exactly. And those of us here who are conservative and didn't vote for that nest of snakes will just deal with it. It stinks for us, but at least we can take comfort in watching Davis deal with his own mess, instead of having the dims pin it on us. It's funny, actually, to watch him try and pin this mess on Bush.

Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Atherton, said she thinks the only hope for states is for them to increase the volume on their plea for help.

"The states are in a world of hurt and county governments can't even come up for air," she said. "With pressure from Democratic and Republican governors, there may be a chance we can shame (Congress) into doing something."

Anna, Honey, THERE'S NO MORE MONEY! Your days of profligate spending and liberal idealism are about to crash upon the rocks of reality.

What effect do you think California's economic failure will have on the rest of the country?

Well, for one thing Arizona will benefit from the relocation of California businesses.

In the final 6 months before I sold my home in Mira Mesa (north San Diego), I had a steady stream of illegals walking down my street. They would often come into my front yard to drink water from my garden hose (without permission). My dogs went nuts and they ran off. I had lived in that house for 18 years and intended to retire there.

When an uninsured Philipino driver smashed head on into my wife (in our new Saturn SL2), she had to force the San Diego PD officer take a report by telling him she had injuries. I took her to the emergency room to get her wrists X-rayed to make sure the airbag didn't cause fractures. Most of the faces in the emergency room appeared to be of Mexican ancestry.

One of my co-workers put her daughter into a private school. She really didn't have the money to do that, but the public school was so full of Mexican kids that there was no room for her daughter. Now she gets to pay for the education of the Mexicans in the public school and bear the additional burden of the private school education.

My wife was a San Diego Sheriff's Office dispatcher for 6 1/2 years. She can attest to the volume of calls generated by criminal activity from illegal aliens. The story hasn't changed much after moving to Idaho. The border is 950 miles south, but the Mexican laborers still manage to engage in criminal acts in numbers far beyond their representation in the local population demographics.

CA is not an economic failure, it is a political failure. The local and state politicians put the state in debt mode and must get it out of the problem by cuts in spending and services, not more taxes.

The economy of CA is still alive, just repressed by government. Once the restrains are lessened, it will come back better than before. The economy is a collection of hard working individuals and businesses and they are still in CA ready to prosper, if allowed by a better business climate.

It will have plenty of effect on the national economy. The United States is in deep doo-doo. We sent our economy to China and Mexico.
