California has lost even that argument. Most of the big cities have a policy of not handing over illegals to INS when the local cops discover them. If we in CA aren't willing to do even that much in enforcing the immigration laws, then we have no business complaining about being burdened by illegals.
When an uninsured Philipino driver smashed head on into my wife (in our new Saturn SL2), she had to force the San Diego PD officer take a report by telling him she had injuries. I took her to the emergency room to get her wrists X-rayed to make sure the airbag didn't cause fractures. Most of the faces in the emergency room appeared to be of Mexican ancestry.
One of my co-workers put her daughter into a private school. She really didn't have the money to do that, but the public school was so full of Mexican kids that there was no room for her daughter. Now she gets to pay for the education of the Mexicans in the public school and bear the additional burden of the private school education.
My wife was a San Diego Sheriff's Office dispatcher for 6 1/2 years. She can attest to the volume of calls generated by criminal activity from illegal aliens. The story hasn't changed much after moving to Idaho. The border is 950 miles south, but the Mexican laborers still manage to engage in criminal acts in numbers far beyond their representation in the local population demographics.
