Doctors Statewide Boost Efforts Of Wisconsin Tobacco Control Board

MADISON, Wis., Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ --

The Wisconsin Tobacco Control Board announced today that over 1,000 physicians throughout the state are partnering with their local tobacco-free coalitions to assure that all Wisconsin citizens know the dangers of secondhand smoke.

"This is a number that simply cannot be ignored," says David Gundersen, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Tobacco Control Board. "These physicians are lending their name and credibility to the fact that secondhand smoke is at best dangerous and at worst deadly."

Public awareness educational campaigns are being implemented by coalitions statewide as part of their efforts to reduce the death and disease caused by tobacco and smoking.

The local physicians campaign is part of a series of advertisements and community efforts alerting the public to the dangers of secondhand smoke. "Our local physicians have stepped up to bring focus to this important health issue," Gundersen says. "The doctors are making it clear that secondhand smoke is dangerous to non-smokers. It only makes sense that the smoke inhaled by smokers is just as bad when they exhale it to non-smokers. It's the same smoke with the same carcinogens that make smokers sick."

"Health problems caused by secondhand smoke can include induced asthma in children and aggravated asthma in those who have the disease. Secondhand smoke can also cause lung cancer and heart disease in nonsmokers in addition to increasing the risk of SIDS," says Dr. Michael Fiore, director of the UW Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (CTRI).

Physicians who are not yet involved and would like to sign on to be a part of the media campaign can log onto www.hadenoughwisconsin.com or www.wisconsinmedicalsociety.org and enter their information.

The secondhand smoke media campaign is a component of the WTCB's statewide initiative to support clean indoor air, including smoke-free restaurants, municipal buildings, work sites, and homes. Other statewide initiatives include a Quit Line for cessation counseling, a Wisconsin Smoke-free Online Dining Guide and a series of ad placements featuring Wisconsin residents who suffer the effects of secondhand smoke.

WISCONSIN SMOKERS' CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STATE ECONOMY - 2001

I guess the "Physicians" don't care about the State Economy in Wisconsin. Or do they think we don't know about this?!

  What a crock!

I think the medical profession in Wisconsin isn't being funded as well as they would like.  I think the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is greasing the palms of these Doc's to go after smokers in that state.

Second Hand Smoke Frauds

Second Hand Smoke: The Evidence

I think any anti who tries to dismiss the findings of the U.S. Department of Energy labs at Oak Ridge, should be confronted with the question: "Are you saying that DOE researchers committed scientific fraud and that their findings on ETS exposure are untrue?"I'd like to see what any anti would say in response to that question.

Fewer people smoke now than ever before, and smoking restrictions and bans have resulted in even less exposure to secondhand smoke.  Yet, adult and childhood asthma cases have increased from approximately 6.7 million in 1980 to 17.3 million in 1998, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The argument that this is being done "for smokers' own good" is demeaning: our bodies are not government property. The argument that smokers cost society money is specious: about one third of us considerately die before cashing in on social security. The argument that smoke is harmful to others is nothing but a subterfuge: the risk of second-hand smoke exposure has been so outrageously distorted that it amounts to an outright lie.

"This is a number that simply cannot be ignored," says David Gundersen, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Tobacco Control Board. "These physicians are lending their name and credibility to the fact that secondhand smoke is at best dangerous and at worst deadly."

Then they are lending their credibility to a 'feeling' not to a scientifically proven fact.

"Health problems caused by secondhand smoke can include induced asthma in children and aggravated asthma in those who have the disease. Secondhand smoke can also cause lung cancer and heart disease in nonsmokers in addition to increasing the risk of SIDS," says Dr. Michael Fiore, director of the UW Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (CTRI)

And then lies on top of other lies. The only thing he was correct on is bolded.

Let's see, is it, "Doctors, the third leading cause of death in the US."?

Ah thanks, Gabz. But that isn't HALF of the links! It really makes me sick about these Doctors and Judges today. You know they are all OLD guys, brought up with smoking.

Now they turn puritan? BS!

And speaking of DOCTORS:

Doctors Are The Third Leading Cause of Death in the US, Causing 250,000 Deaths Every Year!

This article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) is the best article I have ever seen written in the published literature documenting the tragedy of the traditional medical paradigm.

You got it, Joe!

And what are women giving birth to, today? A bunch of wimps?! I was born (at home) to parents who smoked, and I never had ANY of these things.
