Conway Bans Smoking In Parks
Ban Applies To Athletic Fields, Beaches

POSTED: 9:09 a.m. EDT July 19, 2002

CONWAY, N.H. -- Smoking is no longer allowed in parks and town-owned recreation areas in Conway.

Town officials say they want to set a good example for children, promote healthy living, reduce the number of children who start smoking and protect families from breathing second hand smoke.

The ban applies to the town's recreation center, athletic fields, parks and beaches.

Signs will be posted so the public will be aware of this policy. Those who ignore the signs will be asked to leave.

I can see the boom in Jackson, North Conway and Glenn over this.

Give me Glenn - my kind of town - 2 bars no churches.

But, seriously, folks as a parent I do not need the grubmint to determine what is or is not acceptable public behavior.

As to exposure to someone else's tobacco smoke in an outdoor venue - all I can say is cut me a break.

Aren't smokers taxpayers? Seems to me that if you can't take advantage of open places, you should not be taxed for their upkeep. I wonder if these dolts thought of that?

Smoking is no longer allowed in parks and town-owned recreation areas in Conway.

It might behoove the powers that be to have a chat with the officials in Bartlett about the partying teenagers on Cathedral Ledge. Conway officials really have more serious problems around the beach at Echo Lake than adults engaging in a (still) legal activity such as smoking a tobacco product.

You beat me to it!! the point of smokers being taxpayers was going to be my next point - after discussing some of the other aspects of the area with my husband - he's real familiar with the area, it's where his family originated.

I am a diehard anti-smoker, having seen what it did to my father.

But this is ridiculous. As long as tobacco is legal, smoking it on the beach or any other outdoor venue shouldn't be restricted. I'd allow a school to limit it to certain places on an athletic field; I wouldn't want to be sitting next to a smoker in the bleachers getting smoke in my face while I was watching a game, but if the smoker was off to one side I wouldn't care.

Thank you for the common sense shown.
From your attitude I wouldn't call you an anti-smoker. Maybe a die-hard nonsmoker. Wouldn't want anyone else starting but those that choose to do so should be given the opportunity within common sense limits?

I think they should get serious about giving children a good example, I think they should also ban:

-diet drinks with aspartame
-all cola drinks (PH way to low)
-all fattening junk food
-fat people
-people who dress sloppily
-all idiot taxpayer's who would put up with such a stupid ban and not kick the idiots out of office

Anyone care to add to the list?

That's because you're merely against smoking, you're not an "anti" in the meaning it has assumed on the smoking threads.

fat people

Is there anything more disgusting on a beach than to see all the rolls of fat of a mega-porker? Is there anyone who sets a worse example for kids?

If I were a liberal of course I would want my town to ban them from the beach. But, unfortunately I am not so when I see something I don't like in a public place my first instinct is not to ask the local pols to pass a new restriction.

These liberals are walking off the plank with their stupid policies and stupid arguments.

Take a liberal to lunch and blow some cigar smoke in their face!

Fornicating is legal too. There are just appropriate time, place and manner restrictions placed on it.
