Group formerly supported Davis
A nasty spat between Gov. Gray Davis' re-election campaign and a group of former law enforcement supporters erupted yesterday over the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs' endorsement of Republican nominee Bill Simon.
A war of words between Davis campaign manager Garry South and COPS officials culminated in a lively late afternoon news conference in San Diego dominated by a most unlikely topic for the straight-laced Simon campaign: horse manure, or a crude synonym to that effect.
Monty Holden, executive director of the group, said it's backing Simon because Davis has failed to live up to his commitment to support local law enforcement.
Officials said they had been subjected to harassment at the hands of the Davis campaign since word of the impending endorsement got out.
They produced a fax sent by South in late March to COPS president Kelley Moran threatening Holden's position on the Davis-appointed Police Officers Standards and Training commission.
"What is this horse----?!" South demanded. "Monty Holden declaring war through COPS on the governor of California who only appointed him to POST and pimping for Simon?"
"Has Holden lost his mind?" South continued. "If this reflects his sentiments, he needs to lose his job!"
COPS lobbyist Bill Hemby said South should watch his mail for a package of the substance in question.
"We have a fax from Mr. Garry South, who is the chief orchestrator of the governor's campaign, calling our executive director a pimp and the fact that we may be endorsing Bill Simon he called it horse----," said Hemby.
"Well, we're sending Garry South a box of horse manure to let him know that our endorsement of Bill Simon was not horse----, but what we're sending him is going to be."
South said COPS pulled its endorsement of Davis after trying unsuccessfully to shake the campaign down for $100,000 to buy onto a slate mailer before the primary election when the governor had no significant Democratic opposition.
"They're a bunch of money-grubbing mercenaries who sell out to the highest bidder, and we didn't play with them in the primary, so they got (ticked) off and went in the other direction," South said.
Hemby said the Davis campaign approached COPS about the mailer.
COPS claims to "represent" 5,000 law enforcement officers but is far smaller when it comes to dues-paying members.
A March memo from Holden to COPS directors circulated yesterday by the Davis campaign depicts a financially struggling organization that was losing members.
In the memo, Holden says a Simon endorsement would be "a huge recruiting tool" among Republican rank-and-file police officers.

Yeah, share some of the successful campaign traits of your winner in the last presidential election.
However, share them with Davis, we aren't interested in how to lose!
To: John Jorsett
LOL, good point. Simon is going to have to do something to raise his profile though, even if it's to hit the talk show circuit for a week or two. FoxNews would interview him. If they would others might.

The Davis campaign is stacked with losers and incompetents -- from the top down. The idea that anyone would actually exercise independence and endorse Simon....The arrogance of Gary South is breathtaking.

Does anyone have the web site for the COPS group?

I have a white convertible. The red and white bumper sticker looks terrific! And nobody has tried to run me off the road yet, either. Nobody's even given me the finger! I'd best get myself a Simon bumper sticker now.

Event? Sounded like a spat between Davis' Goombahs and the Police org. Didn't realize there was an event to be honest. Look I'm willing to be patient, but I don't want a Bush 92 repeat. I want this campaign taken to Davis every step of the way. Mash that _____.

This is the middle of June hot shot. I was together with the rest of my family the other day and none of us could remember the last time we saw a Simon story let alone something directed at Davis. If you want to play pinhead games you can throw the two events for him that my group are trying to put together. In just a few weeks it's going to be the middle of the summer and Simon hasn't done squat. Now you go ahead and see if you can allienate others big boy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't this same group of Cops SUPPORT DAVIS last time?

This is hilarious. It's high time that Gov. Doofus gets a taste of the H.S. that's representative of his policies and way of running this state. Since Doofus wants to jack up our car registration fees, I'd say that he deserves at least a trunk full from each Californian that plans to vote against him in November. Then we could test the old adage that he wouldn't say sh#@ if he had a mouthful.

And in the meantime, Davis continues his substantial lead in the polls...according to the SF Chronicle.

All units converge on the California Governor's Mansion!

And in the meantime, Davis continues his substantial lead in the polls...according to the SF Chronicle. Totally false. Every poll taken in the past two months has Simon either tied or ahead (I think one poll had Davis up by 2 points).
The lazy press only rely on the publily released PR polls. in this case they are probably talking about the Field Poll from April. The field poll does not screen for likely voters.
Simon is ahead and gaining... See this thread

Hey, Liz, this is getting close to the rats turning on each other......I'm still waiting for some sacrificed and fired rats to roll over and start nibbling on Davis's rat legs. Don't you just love the sound of Rats devouring each other....... And how I love it. You know things are bad if the Rats are turning on each other. Now we wait til the sacrifical
lamb Rats turn tail and spill their guts. Methinks they've gauged that graydavis is dead meat. What say you guys?
