And don't forget the adaptations like building dikes around low lying area of Florida. But this is not only good business, it is far less costly to adapt then to kill our economy by not burning fossil fuels. See The skeptical environmentalist for data, fears of flooding are greatly exagerated, because preventing the floods is about 100 times cheaper than allowing the floods and taking the flood losses.
True. Nevertheless, I'm concerned about some in the bizness community who seek to harness the coercive powers of government to secure a captive market.
There is a myth that bizness people love the free market and thrive on competion. Nonsense. The vast majority of biznessmen abhor a free market, and will do anything to thwart it. And big gov't is one of their most important allies in achieving this objective.
When big gov't and big bizness get together - look out!
Yes, this is a very politicized issue, and we can largely blame the enviro-wackos for that. Nevertheless, lots of conservatives have painted themselves into a corner by insisting that there is no global warming at all.
Global warming will not be all bad, but it will change our world. For example, it is possible that the fabled "Northwest Passage" thru the Artic Sea may be open for year-around traffic within 10-20 years. If this happens, it will definitely change world trade patterns - North Asia (Japan, Korea, China) will have a new shortcut to the markets in West Europe, and vice versa. This will probably be a boon for Asia. For the US, the implications are much less clear.
I will second this comment, the easiest way to wealth in this country is to get an invention and then get the government to require the people to use it. Of course, the market is still the best system we have, even though the above comments are true. You see, there is no reasonable alternative.
Is that a promise? OK, go here. Look for these very words:
The NEPs recommendations address expanded nuclear power generation;improved energy efficiency for vehicles, buildings, appliances, and industry;development of hydrogen fuels and renewable technologies;increased access to federal lands and expedited licensing practices;and expanded use of cleaner fuels, including initiatives for coal and natural gas.
Seems the Monopoly Board there in Indy is going to have a few more Mediterranean Avenues. Nothing like keeping city wide rents artificially high using taxpayer dollars, is there.... You keep paying and paying, unless you are the landlord cashing in.
Like the poor homeless of Silicon Valley with quarter million household incomes....
Right up there with paying to see sporting events in a stadium your tax dollars built.
Glad I live here, where $80,000 buys a really nice place.
...and Washington would be in the crapper. Folks from the hinterlands would take their old car for one last drive..... To D.C., and park it, walk away and not look back. A few million of those and some folks would be looking for new jobs.
Today, subjective science is used to accomplish the task that the misuse of religion would accomplish if not for the First Amendment.
If Madison were around today he would be saying, "Science and government will both exist in greater purity the less they are mixed together." We need an amendment to separate Science and State. We need it yesterday.
Now you REALLY want to get me going! Our ADDED 1% prepared food (think restaurant) tax, to fund the stadium, is LONG overdue to be ended. But WILL they??? Noooo....... And now, after an extensive upgrade just a few years ago, the COLTS (Irsay) wants a BIGGER place to play! Well, goodbye, a lot of us have said!
And just WHERE is that? (Did I miss it?)
Wow. Where do you live, if you don't mind my asking?
(No WONDER he's SMOKIN')
What he meant was: There is something political rather than scientific to global warming.
Whoops...... June 11, 2001
And at home, I call on Congress to work with my administration on the initiatives to enhance conservation and energy efficiency outlined in my energy plan, to implement the increased use of renewables, natural gas and hydropower that are outlined in the plan, and to increase the generation of safe and clean nuclear power. [end snip]
If things get too hot, we'll just egg Pakistan and India on a bit..............
