Bush Wants Food Stamps For Some Noncitizens
GOP Blocks White House Plan, Seeks More Restrictive Approach
Posted: 9:50 a.m. EDT April 11, 2002
WASHINGTON -- House Republicans have blocked President George W. Bush's proposal to restore food stamps to certain noncitizens.
The plan is popular with groups that represent Hispanics, a voting bloc the White House has targeted.
But a House-Senate conference committee that is negotiating a farm bill set aside the food stamp issue after House GOP members insisted on a much more restrictive approach.
Under their plan, immigrants would have to prove they've worked in the country for at least five years and could not receive food stamps for more than two years. Under the White House plan, there would be no time limit on benefits, but immigrants must have been here at least five years to receive the aid.
House Republicans also want to deny benefits to any immigrants who have ever been in the country illegally for more than a year.
Food stamps for legal immigrants were cut off when Congress overhauled the welfare system in 1996.

Wonderful. I do not think anyone who is here illegally or for a short time deserves the benefits that many lawful citizens do not have!! Can you imagine Americans going to another country demanding benefits? What will they think of next?

then let HIM pay for it. I would like the citizens of Mexico to make my house payments, and possibly buy me a pontoon boat. People in hell want icewater, also. does this dude seriously think we HAVE to vote for him. I will vote libertarian, georgie, even if a dem gets the office. but then again, Id expect it from them. put the pipe down, dude.

Send them to Afghanistan and let them compete for the yellow packages of rice we drop out of planes.

Can you imagine Americans going to another country demanding benefits?Actually, I know an American who went to the UK to play a little golf on their more famous links. He had the misfortune of blowing out his knee and had to be taken to the hospital. After treatment, he tried to pay, but was informed that all treatment is free and they didn't even have a procedure for taking payments.
I'm not saying that's the way things should be, just answering your question.

Fine, let Bush pay for them.

I agree, I think these illegal aliens deserve these benefits. I don't care if lawful citizens are not entitled to them. We need to help these illegal aliens because they work so hard and most Americans are lazy no gooders.
Go Bush!

Everyday Bush disappoints me more and more. I'm almost beginning to regret my vote...

Everyday Bush disappoints me more and more. I'm almost beginning to regret my vote...I didn't vote FOR Pres. Bush. I voted AGAINST algore and FOR the potential nomination of a conservative or three to the SCOTUS. I expected the Prez to be a triangulating moderate, so I am not really disappointed. Just sad that that's the best we could hope for in this benighted country.

I agree! Anyone who crosses the border illegally should IMMEDIATELY be given a "living wage" for doing nothing, free medical care, free housing, free car, free babysitting service ("schools") for the 8 to 10 muchachos sure to follow within the next few years, and a color TV showing telenovelas 24/7 so that they can become little zombies watching trash TV for the rest of their lives.
Wait...crap...Davis already did that here in CA....gosh, do ya think that has anything to do with the $18 billion deficit in the state budget this year?

No at all. I think the fault lies with the lazy American taxpayers cheating on their taxes. The greedy no-goods.

Somebody ought to tell Karl Rove that for every vote he buys with this programme it will attract two bogus Democrat votes.
What a goofball.

What we should do is have the libertarian party start lobbying for special grants for libertarian members. The libertarian party could say that the membership will vote republican if the grants to the members are allowed.
This will cause the ranks of the libertarian party to grow as more people will join for the grants and it will increase the lobbying advantage we would have.
When the party has a large enough membership, we will elect our own candidates.

I wonder what the reaction her at FR would be if Clinton would have proposed to expand the welfare state to illegal aliens? Would most post just state that we are disappointed with the president or would we be calling him a traitor? Legislation like this cannot stand whether a Democrat or Republican proposes it.

Food stamps for legal immigrants were cut off when Congress overhauled the welfare system in 1996.Yes, but that didn't sit well with the Illegal Aliens Union.
To: Joe Hadenuf
Absolutely. We are unrepentant scum. I think I will deed my house over to the next illegal Mexican who passes by my front door........which should take about 2 minutes.....
To: Joe Hadenuf
You do have a point about some who are very hardworking individuals.
I must admit that while living in a southern border state, you sort of become hardened and take a very strong stand about the entire illegal thing.
