Those of you who think this is bad are just wrong. It applies to legal immigrants who have worked and paid taxes. Anyone who has worked legally and paid our taxes for five years should not be completely excluded from the system. After another five years (40 quarters) they will get social security. Again, they are paying the taxes that make them entitled to the benefits. If you want reform or cost savings, exclude the american citizens who have not worked even one or two years from receiving the benefits.

Food stamps for legal immigrants were cut off when Congress overhauled the welfare system in 1996.

So, lets see in 1996 President Clinton cut off food stamps to noncitizens and now in 2002 our Republican President wants to expand welfare to these people?

I never thoght I would see the day when a Conservative Republican President would be more Liberal than Bill Clinton!

Perhaps, all Freepers should support Hillary in 2004 in hopes of getting "Welfare Dubya" out of the White House and elect a President that could control social service spending.

Wow. 18 posts so far and still we haven't heard a Bush supporter yet come on and tell us that everything's cool, this is all part of his master "strategery" of pulling the rug out from under the Dems by doing everything they would have done, and that he's such a brilliant politician and really knows how to play the game. Oh, and this will also get the media on his side, because we all know what gullible fools those reporters are!

Did I miss anything?

Now I expect this from Clinton. But come on George....trading principle for votes is lame. Very lame! I expected so much more when I voted "RED" in the last election.

I guess that networks had it right when they color coded all of President Welfare's states in RED.

If there were any doubts about Bush's position on illegal immigration he settles it with this. No president that is serious about defending the integrity of our borders and enforcing our immigration laws would propose welfare handouts to non-citizens. Bush is a open borders liberal...end of story.

Yes, but you will have to provide your own water. There are limits you know.

I've been here legally for nearly 42 years - I've got about 30 bucks to last until payday - can I get foodstamps? NOPE.

My husband works and the grubmint says that if we can afford for me to stay at home with our daughter and not work, then we don't qualify for any assistance, including paying heating expenses, which have gone through the roof. I'm thrilled spring is here, I don't need the heat on - but if I don't pay my gas bill by tomorrow I'm not going to have hot water or be able to cook. And guess what - no one cares.

I'm sorry - I was born here and have been a productive member of society for a long time. If I'm not entitled to any help when I run into a tight situation - then people here illegally or not contributing to society in general should not.

Sorry for the rant - but I have been trying to work something out with the gas company and was told that if I don't pay I'm cut off. "Go to Catholic Charities or the state for assistance" is what I was told. If my husband found out I had checked with either he would have a fit - but he won't find out - cause we don't qualify. He works and we own a home. The choices left to me at the moment are cold showers and microwaved food or get a job ASAP and put my daughter in someone else's care. It's a good thing we like to barbecue and I can boil water in the microwave.

People here illegally deserve NOTHING from our government - because people like my family who fund our government are not permitted to get anything from OUR government.

I hope no one takes me wrong - I've got nothing against people coming here properly for a better life, my grandparents did. But my husband's family members did not lose their lives in the Revolutionary War for their progeny to be denied help from the country they helped create in favor of those who choose to abuse our laws.

As I said - I'm sorry for my rant.

"Help is on the way"

"My concern about the role of the federal government is that an intrusive government, a government that says, ‘Don’t worry, we will solve your problems’ is a government that tends to crowd compassion out of the marketplace, that too often in the past people said: ‘Somebody else will take care of the problem in my area. Don’t worry. The government is here.’ "
