Wonderful. I do not think anyone who is here illegally or for a short time deserves the benefits that many lawful citizens do not have!! Can you imagine Americans going to another country demanding benefits? What will they think of next?

then let HIM pay for it. I would like the citizens of Mexico to make my house payments, and possibly buy me a pontoon boat. People in hell want icewater, also. does this dude seriously think we HAVE to vote for him. I will vote libertarian, georgie, even if a dem gets the office. but then again, Id expect it from them. put the pipe down, dude.

Send them to Afghanistan and let them compete for the yellow packages of rice we drop out of planes.

Somebody ought to tell Karl Rove that for every vote he buys with this programme it will attract two bogus Democrat votes.

What a goofball.

I wonder what the reaction her at FR would be if Clinton would have proposed to expand the welfare state to illegal aliens? Would most post just state that we are disappointed with the president or would we be calling him a traitor? Legislation like this cannot stand whether a Democrat or Republican proposes it.

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans have blocked President Bill Clinton's proposal to restore food stamps to certain noncitizens.

The plan is popular with groups that represent Hispanics, a voting bloc the White House has targeted.

But a House-Senate conference committee that is negotiating a farm bill set aside the food stamp issue after House GOP members insisted on a much more restrictive approach.

Under their plan, immigrants would have to prove they've worked in the country for at least five years and could not receive food stamps for more than two years. Under the White House plan, there would be no time limit on benefits, but immigrants must have been here at least five years to receive the aid.

House Republicans also want to deny benefits to any immigrants who have ever been in the country illegally for more than a year.

Food stamps for legal immigrants were cut off when Congress overhauled the welfare system in 1996.

Those of you who think this is bad are just wrong. It applies to legal immigrants who have worked and paid taxes. Anyone who has worked legally and paid our taxes for five years should not be completely excluded from the system. After another five years (40 quarters) they will get social security. Again, they are paying the taxes that make them entitled to the benefits. If you want reform or cost savings, exclude the american citizens who have not worked even one or two years from receiving the benefits.

Wow. 18 posts so far and still we haven't heard a Bush supporter yet come on and tell us that everything's cool, this is all part of his master "strategery" of pulling the rug out from under the Dems by doing everything they would have done, and that he's such a brilliant politician and really knows how to play the game. Oh, and this will also get the media on his side, because we all know what gullible fools those reporters are!

Did I miss anything?

Now I expect this from Clinton. But come on George....trading principle for votes is lame. Very lame! I expected so much more when I voted "RED" in the last election.

If there were any doubts about Bush's position on illegal immigration he settles it with this. No president that is serious about defending the integrity of our borders and enforcing our immigration laws would propose welfare handouts to non-citizens. Bush is a open borders liberal...end of story.

I've been here legally for nearly 42 years - I've got about 30 bucks to last until payday - can I get foodstamps? NOPE.

My husband works and the grubmint says that if we can afford for me to stay at home with our daughter and not work, then we don't qualify for any assistance, including paying heating expenses, which have gone through the roof. I'm thrilled spring is here, I don't need the heat on - but if I don't pay my gas bill by tomorrow I'm not going to have hot water or be able to cook. And guess what - no one cares.

I'm sorry - I was born here and have been a productive member of society for a long time. If I'm not entitled to any help when I run into a tight situation - then people here illegally or not contributing to society in general should not.

Sorry for the rant - but I have been trying to work something out with the gas company and was told that if I don't pay I'm cut off. "Go to Catholic Charities or the state for assistance" is what I was told. If my husband found out I had checked with either he would have a fit - but he won't find out - cause we don't qualify. He works and we own a home. The choices left to me at the moment are cold showers and microwaved food or get a job ASAP and put my daughter in someone else's care. It's a good thing we like to barbecue and I can boil water in the microwave.

People here illegally deserve NOTHING from our government - because people like my family who fund our government are not permitted to get anything from OUR government.

I hope no one takes me wrong - I've got nothing against people coming here properly for a better life, my grandparents did. But my husband's family members did not lose their lives in the Revolutionary War for their progeny to be denied help from the country they helped create in favor of those who choose to abuse our laws.

As I said - I'm sorry for my rant.
