Since Sept. 11, demand for the matricula has spiked, with immigrants standing in line for hours each day. The Chicago consulate said it has been issuing 300 cards daily.

"There are certain needs we have that can be met with a matricula," said Jesus Romero, an illegal alien who recently stood on line with dozens of other immigrants to get the card that essentially guarantees better access to U.S. public and private institutions.

Are the people in Washington insane?

Yes, they are.

Yes, they are, but not in the way you're thinking. They're insane because they've been driven insane with greed, power-lust, arrogance, and hubris; but most of all, they've been driven mad by too much power.

Some people think that those in DC really, deep down in their hearts, want what is best for America...while making a few bucks on the side. I believe, however, that most of them don't give a damn about America: that they're too self-centered, too corrupt, to care about anything outside of their little empires. They will happily sacrifice this country if it helps them expand their empires. America is expendable to them.

When I vote in elections, it is with the thought of who will do the least amount of damage, not who is actually going to improve this country. In the 33 years I've been alive, only *one* president actually left our country better off after his time as president: Reagan. Other than him, it has been a steady powergrab and downward spiral.

Our 'leaders' want to become our masters. That is why they shouldn't be trusted.

He said that every poor person in the world deserves opportunity-too bad it doesn't apply to the US citizens.

He meant: every poor person deserves the opportunity to come to the US and work for me and my friends.

Just a little irony. Some of the neocons are sounding like libertarians about the immigration issue.

Wow. I've always thought of myself as fairly libertarian (though not hard-core about it). Amnesty for illegals just doesn't fit in with my definition of libertarianism.

The idea of personal responsibility, rule of law, and the minimal government necessary to do the job outlined in the Constitution is what I support. If the Libertarians are going to start sounding like Neo-cons and are going to be supporting illegal immigrants being given a pass, then our ways are starting to diverge.

Just to clarify.

It's the official LP position to open the borders only when welfare is abolished.

I don't have a problem with welfare being abolished and I don't have a problem with hard working Mexicans coming here.

So I don't have a problem with the LP plank on this issue.

I do have a problem with our federal law enforcement officers in the INS and other agencies giving a pass to terrorists given the current conditions.

Clear?

Hmm. Well, this doesn't sound so bad, as when the hand-outs are removed, theoretically only those who want to be part of our culture and to work hard will show up. In practice, I don't think we would have any way of ensuring that these are the sort of immigrants we'd get. Furthermore, if our borders become truely open, there is nothing to prevent some terrorist with a grudge from crossing into our country and blowing things up.

My position is that a border and guards for said border are a necessary part of government and should be provided for. Since I think guarded borders are necessary to maintianing our country's existance, I would approve of the people providing funding for it.

I still mostly agree with the LP position and, I believe, with Libertarians in general -- far more than with any other political party.

"hard working Mexicans"? That phrase is getting really old. Are they the ONLY nationality that is hard working???

Yesterday, I spoke with a small group of law enforcement officers in Tennessee. They have stopped U-Haul trucks full of illegals - 30 of them piled in the back. They called the INS and were told "Let them go. That's not enough for us to worry about. We're too busy."

In one case a state trooper mentioned, there were hundreds of illegals together at a park beside a lake. The troopers were told by INS, "Let them go."

They arrest illegals all the time for various crimes. The first time a guy is arrested, his name is "Juan." He has false ID. "Juan" posts bond and never appears in court. The next time they arrest the same guy, his ID says he "Manuel." Law enforcement officers have no idea who the people they arrest really are! Illegal aliens SHARE the same ID card info with many of their own by simply using different photos on the cards.

We, who are citizens with proof of our identity, are going to be held accountable for our law-breaking. They know exactly who we are. Illegal aliens simply get away with all kinds of things because INS won't deport them and there is such massive identity fraud among them.

These law enforcement officers made it clear. Citizens have fewer rights and lattitude than illegal aliens.

Americans are now second-class citizens in our own country!"

I will never understand why they are not arresting these people. If I break the law, I get arrested. If they break the law, they get rewarded. It doesn't make any sense to me.

Run, run for your lives, 95% of these people want to bus your table after you eat, pick your vegetables, and clean your toilets, to look for a better life.

And vote for Democrats and Socialists, who are laughing up their butts at some American people's ignorance of what is really going on.

I guess the equivalent of this would be if the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico actively encouraged U.S. citizens to violate the law of sovereignty in Mexico. The Mexican government is actually condoning and encouraging its citizens to illegally invade the United States... on its face this would be an act of war.

Why can't they make a better lives for themselves in their *own* country? Hmm...

Would you say this about Cubans trying to escape Castro?

Wonderfully hard working people coming here to work for a better life for themselves and their families.

They're criminals. They need to be arrested and removed. This is a nation of laws.

We are truly a melting pot.

LOL!

Neither can I. Just having one of those phony things should give any LEO reason to believe that the card holder is an illegal alien..... and thus subject to arrest.

If I break the law, I get arrested. If they break the law, they get rewarded. It doesn't make any sense to me.

No telling what GWB told that bunch of reconquistas yesterday. Things will probably get much worse.

Why isn't Bush man enough to get on TV and tell us what his plans are? I know - don't divulge family secrets.

But we have a right to know the method of his madness.

No problem -- I do think immigrants are good for our country, but I agree with you that we need to enforce laws and make this a land of opportunity vs. handouts...

Apparently we don't count..... judging by that group of poll results you posted recently Americans aren't being considered in the big globalist picture.

Would you say this about Cubans trying to escape Castro?

Yes and no. If a large enough percentage of Cuban citizens got tired of Castro, then all it would take is a spark to set them off. Evidently, they don't hate their government enough to revolt against it. If that were to happen, then we could arm the Cubans currently residing here and send them back.

So, 1) The Cubans here in the US are not a significant portion of the Cuban citizenry; and 2) the bulk of the Cuban citizenry isn't motivated towards changing their government.

If the US wanted to be high-handed about it and thought they had the support of the Cuban people, they could just go in and wipe out the upper echelons of the Cuban government, help them form a democratic form of government, and then let them grow on their own. However, as I mentioned before, I don't think the Cuban people would support that sort of move from the US and we aren't (yet) that high-handed.
