Tancredo doubts he can block amnesty-extension bill

Friday, March 08, 2002 - WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo takes credit for thwarting the Bush administration's last effort to offer partial amnesty to thousands of illegal residents, but Thursday the outspoken immigration foe said he may have been outmaneuvered by the White House.
President Bush has struck a deal with the House leadership to place legislation that offers an extension of amnesty on its consent calendar before Bush heads to Mexico for a state visit next week, the Colorado Republican said.
That action should ensure quick House passage of legislation that Bush has repeatedly sought from Congress. It would allow an undocumented person to receive legal standing, such as a valid green card, by filing a declaration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
It presumably also would require the person to have been in the United States by a certain date and have filed a declaration with the INS from an appropriate sponsor, such as a relative or employer, and pay a $1,000 penalty.
"The terms are still up in the air," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration, a group that has been allied with Tancredo. "We've heard to the effect that the president wants something to bring down to Mexico."
The initial Bush proposal, designed exclusively for Mexicans, once was high on the president's legislative wish list, but it was delayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, as the president noted Wednesday in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he now is pushing for the extension of the amnesty program known by the section of immigration law that covers it, Section 245I.
The president hailed it as a way to reunite family, separated by the border. "If you believe in family values, if you understand the worth of family and the importance of family, let's get 245I out of the United States Congress and give me a chance to sign it," Bush told the chamber members.
Tancredo, the head of a congressional caucus on immigration issues and proponent of halting virtually all immigration, said he had blocked a previous attempt by Bush to push an extension of the amnesty program through the House. But this time, he said House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to place the issue on the suspension, or consent, calendar, making it difficult to defeat the proposal.
The Senate might be more favorable to the bill than the House, expanding the numbers of individuals who can apply, Tancredo said.

66 Charged With Airport Fake Documents
By The Associated Press ---March 8, 2002, 6:08 PM EST
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Federal indictments unsealed Friday charged 66 people, most of them illegal immigrants from Mexico, with lying or using fake documents to get jobs in high-security areas at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
U.S. Attorney Robert Conrad said 47 people were arrested at the airport Friday. Most worked for a cleaning service, although others were involved in fueling aircraft, food services and baggage handling, he said.
The security badges allow workers access to planes, ramps, runways and cargo areas. Conrad said the investigation, begun in the weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, found no evidence of terrorist activity.
Cooper did not know when the other 19 suspects would be taken into custody.
The grand jury's indictment contained charges of violating immigration laws and making false representations to obtain employment and security badges, Cooper said.
Similar sweeps have been conducted at other U.S. airports.

And how much of a percentage does four people make? Since this thread is able to be viewed by all of the FreeRepublic contingent, I'd say that 73 to 4 is a pretty good cross reference or survey of the opinions of freerepublic. I've seen many people who hardly ever get involved in the immigration threads show up in vocal opposition to this amnesty nonsense. Not long ago, I conducted a Free Republic poll on abortion. Like myself, around 85% of the respondents were Pro-Life, whereas only 13% were Pro-Abortion. Much like abortion, most Freepers do not support amnesty
Huh, this a "one issue" thread as I call them. People express their outrage on their pet issue. This is just like a drug thread. Same old names show up and express their outrage and actually I am "surprised" at that some of the names that show up on the drug threads show up on this one.
Some people are malcontents and just want to be negative all the time. They have to have someone to scream at, IMHO.

"I do not intent to repeat the same mistake."
I voted for Keyes in the Primary knowing there was no chance. I voted for Buchanan in the General knowing there was no chance.
But like that Country Song "The Winner" it's good to give a few hits back to the guy hittin' you. Then you count who lost the most teeth. :-)

It turned out that the 2000 election lesser of two evils is today's evil. I do not intent to repeat the same mistake. This has been said by many on FR. Myself included. I may not even vote in 2004. It depends on who is running.

It's obvious these two are here simply to disrupt. Don't feed the trolls.

Some people are malcontents and some are bootlickers. Well, well, well, sarcasm, why am I not surprised that the same insults thrown at me on the drug threads are thrown at me on the immigration threads.
There is a "thread" between the two, IMHO.

I've been on the phone (my reps, Hastert, RNC, the prez), sent e-mails (all major news papes, reps), faxes, etc.
The noise level is going up.

Are you now acknowledging that you are a bootlicker? Are you acknowledging that you are a malcontent?
Two can play at your game.

I'm absolutely disgusted with Bush - voting for him was the worst mistake I have made in an election in my life. If this makes me a malcontent, so be it; at least I'm not a bootlicker.

I'm equally irate about it. Uncontrolled illegal immigration means greater danger to our national security, bigger government, higher taxes, and more costs passed on to hard-working American taxpayers through crime, welfare, and reduced quality of life for American citizens and legal residents. Its really about giving some people an exemption from having to play by the rules of this great country. And the amnesty for illegal aliens is nothing more than a scam to give people who shouldn't even be in this country in the first place a free ride at the expense of those who are still waiting in the line to become American citizens. That's neither American, just, or fair. We need to send a message to our elected officials we tried amnesty before and more of the same isn't going to address the problem of illegal immigration. Only more enforcement of our immigration laws will. Let's roll!!!

Spewing more lies I see - where have you ever seen me support Buchanan?
