Friday, March 08, 2002 - WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo takes credit for thwarting the Bush administration's last effort to offer partial amnesty to thousands of illegal residents, but Thursday the outspoken immigration foe said he may have been outmaneuvered by the White House.
President Bush has struck a deal with the House leadership to place legislation that offers an extension of amnesty on its consent calendar before Bush heads to Mexico for a state visit next week, the Colorado Republican said. That action should ensure quick House passage of legislation that Bush has repeatedly sought from Congress. It would allow an undocumented person to receive legal standing, such as a valid green card, by filing a declaration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. It presumably also would require the person to have been in the United States by a certain date and have filed a declaration with the INS from an appropriate sponsor, such as a relative or employer, and pay a $1,000 penalty. "The terms are still up in the air," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration, a group that has been allied with Tancredo. "We've heard to the effect that the president wants something to bring down to Mexico." The initial Bush proposal, designed exclusively for Mexicans, once was high on the president's legislative wish list, but it was delayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, as the president noted Wednesday in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he now is pushing for the extension of the amnesty program known by the section of immigration law that covers it, Section 245I. The president hailed it as a way to reunite family, separated by the border. "If you believe in family values, if you understand the worth of family and the importance of family, let's get 245I out of the United States Congress and give me a chance to sign it," Bush told the chamber members. Tancredo, the head of a congressional caucus on immigration issues and proponent of halting virtually all immigration, said he had blocked a previous attempt by Bush to push an extension of the amnesty program through the House. But this time, he said House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to place the issue on the suspension, or consent, calendar, making it difficult to defeat the proposal. The Senate might be more favorable to the bill than the House, expanding the numbers of individuals who can apply, Tancredo said.
I thought it was illegal for an employer to hire an illegal.
The second thing an illegal needs to do (most likely) is to get a driver's license ~ illegally.
I thought it was illegal to drive with false license and without insurance ~ which requires a Social Security or an ID number..
The third thing an illegal needs to do, in that case, is to get a Social Security or an ID number ~ illegally.
I thought it was against the law to use a false Social Security number ~ or to misuse someone else's ~ or to use a false ID.
The fourth thing an illegal needs to do is to have taxes taken from each paycheck ~ via (a) no Social Security number or a false one and then file an IRS return ~ via (b) no Social Security number or a false one
The fifth thing an illegal needs to do is to find a place to live ~ with (most likely) an application and a credit check ~ via no Social Security number or a false one ~ and what about standard landlord/tenant (not to mention fire) codes, limiting the number of people allowed to inhabit one given living space.
So, now, if these people merely begin to live in our country, breaking our most elementary laws, I'M CONFUSED!
Mr. Bush wants to forgive them completely with an amnesty!?
Hey! My auto insurance is way too expensive, my taxes are too high, and I could use a few more occupants to share my rent. My health and disability insurance is out of sight and my spendable dollar ~ well, it just keeps shrinking.
It looks like I've been paying my share for years and years ~ so what forgiveness do I get? A free GET-OUT-OF-JAIL-CARD for doing what I've always done ~ and what the law says I have to do?
AMNESTY FOR ILLEGALS IS LUDICROUS! Has Mr. Bush completely lost his mind!
I appreciate your email. Needless to say you are not alone in your frustrations. The simple reason Chris is our Congressman is due to his wealth. This is not a good enough reason to send him back. We are running a grass roots campaign that would make Mr. Simon happy. There is nothing wrong standing for what is right. If you are able to send a donation that would be great.

(801) 489-8342It may help to know more about me. I have served now for four years. I have served as Vice Chair of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice; Chair of the Enhancement of public Education Task Force, which is tasked with restoring local control in education; And, Chair of the Child Welfare Legislative Oversight Panel, which oversees Child Protective Services in the state. We have used this to restore parental rights. I have also served in House Leadership.
In Utah we have a group known as Grass Roots. This is similar to the American Conservative Union back in Washington. With Grass Roots I have the second highest lifetime score in the House of Representatives and the third highest in the Legislature.[comment: he's referring to the Utah House of Reps]
If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.
Sincerely, Rep Matt Throckmorton
I plan to send him $100.00. He's up against a jerk who is only in Congress to make himself richer, at the expense of the United States. So he'll need all he can get.
Please ping your list to read this post.
I know Tancredo also needs help. I plan on donating to him, too.
Remember that the mass immigrationists have ethnic organizations and cheap labor businesses on their side. The only people that the anti-illegal immigration Congressmen have on their side are the American people. And they generally can't contribute a lot. So we need a lot of people to contribute a little.
I bet the Generalisimo didn't mention the fact that 2 illegals were arrested at DFW airport here for flying for American Airlines. Actually American Eagle which is a feeder airline for American Airlines but still owned by AMR.
The inmates are running the asylum!!
