Friday, March 08, 2002 - WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo takes credit for thwarting the Bush administration's last effort to offer partial amnesty to thousands of illegal residents, but Thursday the outspoken immigration foe said he may have been outmaneuvered by the White House.
President Bush has struck a deal with the House leadership to place legislation that offers an extension of amnesty on its consent calendar before Bush heads to Mexico for a state visit next week, the Colorado Republican said. That action should ensure quick House passage of legislation that Bush has repeatedly sought from Congress. It would allow an undocumented person to receive legal standing, such as a valid green card, by filing a declaration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. It presumably also would require the person to have been in the United States by a certain date and have filed a declaration with the INS from an appropriate sponsor, such as a relative or employer, and pay a $1,000 penalty. "The terms are still up in the air," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration, a group that has been allied with Tancredo. "We've heard to the effect that the president wants something to bring down to Mexico." The initial Bush proposal, designed exclusively for Mexicans, once was high on the president's legislative wish list, but it was delayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, as the president noted Wednesday in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he now is pushing for the extension of the amnesty program known by the section of immigration law that covers it, Section 245I. The president hailed it as a way to reunite family, separated by the border. "If you believe in family values, if you understand the worth of family and the importance of family, let's get 245I out of the United States Congress and give me a chance to sign it," Bush told the chamber members. Tancredo, the head of a congressional caucus on immigration issues and proponent of halting virtually all immigration, said he had blocked a previous attempt by Bush to push an extension of the amnesty program through the House. But this time, he said House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to place the issue on the suspension, or consent, calendar, making it difficult to defeat the proposal. The Senate might be more favorable to the bill than the House, expanding the numbers of individuals who can apply, Tancredo said.
TRUTH: Prior to 1965 when the disastrous Immigration Bill was passed, there was very little immigration. In fact, between 1925 and 1965, there was even a period of net emigration out of the United States. During this time, our grass was getting cut, our meat was being packed, our children were being watched and our houses were being cleaned. The idea that somehow we suddenly can't run a country without an unlimited supply of foreigners is absurd.
Those in favor of foreign labor are corporations who are addicted to cheap labor. They are the ones who are benefiting. But their benefit comes at the American tax payer's expense when you consider that the American tax payer is virtually subsidizing the labor costs of the greedy corporations by supplying the illegal foreign workers and their families with welfare, free education, free medical, WICs, housing assistance, etc. -- something the corporations won't do.
Americans won't allow themselves to be exploited like illegals do, but they WILL do the work that illegals do for fair compensation and benefits. If Americans did the work that illegals do at higher pay, would that benefit the consumer? You bet it would in the long run. But many Americans who do not care about America's future are consumers who favor the idea of exploiting illegal workers because it keeps commodity and service prices down in the short term.
Millions of new Spanish-speaking citizens to vote for his nephew and fellow Spanish-speaker,George "The Latino" Bush, and sweetheart deals between the Mexican National oil company and various Bush family members. It be all about family empire, wealth, and power.
It's not OUR country. It belongs to the elites and the corporations they own,and that own them. We are mere employees. Nobody consults employees.
Nope,he represents the interests of the Bush family, and the other families in his social "group" that are in business with him.
Don't worry, they will be showing up,telling us this is all part of some "secret plan" Bubba-2 has to "trick the Dims".
BTW,any truth to the rumor that Fox is going to do a special titled,"When Bush-Bots attack!",to be aired directly after celeberty boxing?
I honestly think I have it figured out. See my posts on this thread and others about the 3rd George Bush (called "The Latino" Bush),and deals between to Mexican National oil company and various Bush family members.
No your not, but I think I was.
If Mexico won't let our trucks in, then I see no reason why we should let there trucks in. And the same goes for Canada.
Bush is Pro-Mexico, and will sacrifice US workers for Mexican Workers, and it will kill him in the election. I won't vote for him again.
Nope,he's using it as a excuse to pass legislation making it easier for the feral gooberment to control those of us who disagree with him. Things like the so-called Patriot Act,and the Office of Reich Security. They ain't aimed at REAL terrorists or illegals, they are aimed at US.
Tell that to the former tree planters, mill workers, and former construction workers that live where I do. Mexicans have taken their jobs. Why, because they will work for less, and can't ask questions or complain about working conditions.
It's not that Americans won't take the jobs, they are being forced out of many of them. Last summer my son went to do something that I used to do to make money in the summer, pick apples in Hood River. Guess what he discovered, he wasn't allowed to work there because the supervisor only spoke spanish, and didn't want to deal with an English speaker. Now just imagine the howling in the media if it were the other way around!
I laughed at that, and then sat back and thought, damn, its probably gunna happen.
I can't wait to hear what kind of name they will use instead of amnesty. Lets see, will it be guest worker? The good neighbor pass? Honored guest worker? Hard working honored guest worker? Honorable illegal guest worker?
Don't miss it.
i lost my country around here somewhere...did anyone see it? i know it's here...
You can count me in as well.
