Tancredo doubts he can block amnesty-extension bill
Denver Post ^ | March 8, 2002 | Bill McAllister

Friday, March 08, 2002 - WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo takes credit for thwarting the Bush administration's last effort to offer partial amnesty to thousands of illegal residents, but Thursday the outspoken immigration foe said he may have been outmaneuvered by the White House.

President Bush has struck a deal with the House leadership to place legislation that offers an extension of amnesty on its consent calendar before Bush heads to Mexico for a state visit next week, the Colorado Republican said.

That action should ensure quick House passage of legislation that Bush has repeatedly sought from Congress. It would allow an undocumented person to receive legal standing, such as a valid green card, by filing a declaration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

It presumably also would require the person to have been in the United States by a certain date and have filed a declaration with the INS from an appropriate sponsor, such as a relative or employer, and pay a $1,000 penalty.

"The terms are still up in the air," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration, a group that has been allied with Tancredo. "We've heard to the effect that the president wants something to bring down to Mexico."

The initial Bush proposal, designed exclusively for Mexicans, once was high on the president's legislative wish list, but it was delayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, as the president noted Wednesday in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he now is pushing for the extension of the amnesty program known by the section of immigration law that covers it, Section 245I.

The president hailed it as a way to reunite family, separated by the border. "If you believe in family values, if you understand the worth of family and the importance of family, let's get 245I out of the United States Congress and give me a chance to sign it," Bush told the chamber members.

Tancredo, the head of a congressional caucus on immigration issues and proponent of halting virtually all immigration, said he had blocked a previous attempt by Bush to push an extension of the amnesty program through the House. But this time, he said House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to place the issue on the suspension, or consent, calendar, making it difficult to defeat the proposal.

The Senate might be more favorable to the bill than the House, expanding the numbers of individuals who can apply, Tancredo said.

The Republicans need to be taught a lesson by becoming the minority party again if they are going to act like liberal Democrats. I didn't vote in Tuesdays election because of this and I'm not voting in November.

Bush's approval rating has slipped below 80%, and by the time 2004 rolls around and attention shifts to domestic problems, he'll be at 50% or below. Conservatives are not going to forget this sellout.

I agree with you. Pushing the GOP in the minority would have the salutary development of ridding the party of the RINOs currently infesting it like an unwanted nuisance.

This is for us exactly what his father's signing the tax increase was. Its really a litmus test and if the President were committed to conservative principles he wouldn't be trying to ram this down our throats. Time to ring up those phones in the House and Senate and let our elected representatives know what's going to be in store for them if they vote for this measure.

Wouldn't it be great if we could get thousands of protestors to descend on Washington and let them know what most Americans really think of what's going on? That is what it's going to take. That, and voting the rascals out.

I'm convinced that President Bush has got a bet with someone that says we're all stupid enough to be loyal to him after he spits in our eyes and sells our country down the Rio Grande.

It doesn't matter now if it doesn't pass. The point is, he did it.

Yep, and if by chance this measure fails Jorge Bush will try it again and again until he gets what he wants. No bones about it. Bush represents the interests of Mexico not the U.S.A. His open favoritism expressed towards the millions of Mexican lawbreakers over every other LEGAL constituency in this nation is beyond appalling. This guy needs to be yanked from power along with most of the GOP.

So, the administration is "angry" with a patriot like Tom Tancredo, and puts a sleazy, self-interested fat boy like Chris Cannon out there to play games with a screaming leftist like Zoe Lofgren to undermine the country?

Come on, BushBots, tell me the guy is a conservative.

BS.

We should be asking ourselves WTF he is in such a hell-fire hurry to cram this down our throats.

I have been asking myself this question since he started this madness. I can't come up with an answer.

Forget globalization. Forget big business. Forget free trade. I am beginning to think that something BIG is going on here. Something that none of us see or understand. I hope not but I can't figure it out.

This so-called pro-immigration caucus Cannon is putting together will be almost all democrats, you watch. That's because that's what Cannon is. He calls himself a Republican so he'll get elected in conservative Utah.

Remarks By The President To The Hispanic Chamber Of Commerce

"I want to talk about another subject that's incredibly important for not only the border states, but all of America. And that's relations with our neighbors to the south, Mexico.

Mexico is a friend of America. Mexico is our neighbor. And we want our neighbors to succeed. We want our neighbors to do well. We want our neighbors to be successful. We understand that a poor neighbor is somebody that's going to be harder to deal with than a neighbor that's prospering. And that's why it's so important for us to tear down barriers and walls that might separate Mexico from the United States. And that's why it's so important for us to stand strong when it comes to free trade with our neighbors to the south.

NAFTA has been good for New Mexico, and it's been good for Mexico. And that's an important relationship that I pledge to continue on. I ask -- I ask for the Congress -- I ask for the Congress to give me trade promotion authority, so that we can not only have free trade with our neighbor to the south, so that we can have free trade throughout the hemisphere.

Oh, I know there's some voices who want to wall us off from Mexico. They want to build a wall. I say to them, they want to condemn our neighbors to the south in poverty, and I refuse to accept that type of isolationist and protectionist attitude. (Applause.)

And let me say one other thing, one other issue that's important. It speaks to the spirit of our nation. It speaks to whether or not we're going to be true friends with the neighbors to the south. And that's the issue of trucking. There are some people who say we shouldn't allow our friends to the south to send their trucks into the United States. I say that's discrimination against Mexico.

Ping to you. Tell us - how do people in Provo-Orem feel about Chris Cannon's pro-illegal alien shenanigans?

And the recent Utah house vote to give in-state tuition to illegals?

Its a BI PARTISAN scam. The politicians want to put the people of this country last. And they want non citizen voters because they can be easily controlled and ordered to vote for bigger government, higher taxes, and crumbling third world infrastructure.
