Remember the famous retort by Reagan that he had purchased that microphone and he wanted to be able to use it? In my opinion Reagan had to overcome leftist Republican leaders to press his candidacy forward in 1980. The Republican party leadership in California has the rep of being far left of it's constituancy. Buchanan was red hot in California in 1996. The young Republicans were favorable to him. Many others were too. But the state leadership turned up their nose and held out for Mr. Energy, Bob Dole. So did the national party. Look what happened.

If Simon can pull it off, and he manages to govern well, he's going to be a natural Presidential candidate in as little as six years.

Rush Limbaugh: Simon the next Reagan? Radio host urges governor candidate to stick with conservatism

I like Rush but he's hardly a good prognosticator of elections. Remember how there was going to be a "Bush landslide?"

It's an interesting analysis. I suspect Simon can win barring any cheating by the lib/dems. But I wouldn't discount the cheat factor in that state where the DEM party machinery is in charge of almost everything. DEMS also have a pattern of cheating and seeing that it is covered up until AFTER the election. After their guy is in, they really don't seem to care if their cheating is exposed because they consider those caught to be expendable in the process of meeting the overarching goal. It's that whole "ends justifies the means" thing.

I'm not sure what Simon can do about it other than get some folks on his campaign who can unearth the cheating early and break it BIG time as a major scandal. The difficulty there is that (other than Clinton/Gore), most of the DEMS have figured out how to break a mess of lesser rules, without ever doing the major blunder.

I think Rush is right on in this article and I believe Simon will win if the corruption of the Democrats (dead voters, illegal alien, ballot stuffing) is stopped. I also believe it depends on the RNC getting behind the "Republican" candidate. Should be interesting! If Simon starts to go to the center for the general election, Davis will win by 20-40 points.

Thanks for the ping JohnHuang2.

I listened to the entire Limbaugh radio program on this yesterday. It was riveting and one of Rush's more notable performances. With his hearing restored he is back to his old self.

And as Rush said himself, a listener would probably learn as much from his program yesterday as he would from taking a three credit hour college course.

There were a lot of importance things said by Rush in the broadcast not fully covered in this post including campaign tactics of Democrats and political positions of Riordan that are not conservative, such as suport of open immigration and legalization of illegals.

Rush was justifiably critical of Riordan's concession speach which did not help Simon. Rush took calls from Republicans in California who had supported Riordan but swithced to Simnon and who had some revealing things to say.

Rush sent a load and clear message directly to National Republican Committee decision makers about their need to support Simon against Democratic tactics to be launched by the Gray Davis side.

Rush warned of the the need for national Republicans to be more receptive and supportive and respectful of the conservative base of the Republican party and their positions on key issues that define conservatives and help candidates get and stay elected.

Great!

We conservatives in Kali have the hardest battle that we have ever had.

The evil/vile Fascist Davis has started using the abortion card, the race card, the mean Christian conservative card, the illegal alien voting card.

Davis can't run on his record of total incompetence, allowing his insiders to make fortunes, getting huge campaign donations from Demron and Double Crossing, the dumbing down of children and ruining an incredible economy in less than 3 years. He has to use every dirty trick that was used by the Nazis to win control of his dark side voting cult.

We need to work for Simon and to contribute to Free Republic to counter all of the left wing maggot infested fish wraps and tv stations who are in the pocket of Davis.

Davis must be defeated, then tried for his crimes and sent to prison with his old buddy Condidit! They are two of a kind. A pair that deserves each other!

Reagan wrote about that campaign, "[Kennedy] began a speaking trip around the state declaring, 'Reagan has never held any political office before and here he is seeking the top spot in the government of California.'

"He abandoned that theme after my next speech, when I said, 'I understand there's a senator from Massachusetts who's come to California and he's concerned that I've never held office prior to seeking this job. Well, you know, come to think of it, the senator from Massachusetts never held any job before he became a senator.'"

God bless Ronald Reagan!

Radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh is trumpeting this week's California primary win by Bill Simon, saying he could be the next Ronald Reagan in terms of a political newcomer ousting a sitting Democrat governor.

Oh just a small obstacle to achieving that -- actually getting elected, perhaps? Simon has a large task in front of him. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's going to be hard for a right-winger to win in modern-day California. California is a different place than it was 40 years ago.

Rush predicted a Bush landslide, if I recall correctly. He also said that Bret Schundler would win NJ shortly after the NJ GOP primary. Rush is not too good at predicting elections.
